I'll see if I can narrow the list down at all tomorrow. (Using a script ofc)

I just picked a couple of random mods, and it seems as though 90% of it is elsewhere.

http://yacoby.silgrad.com/ff.html (6k rows)

MW Only
http://yacoby.silgrad.com/ff_mw.html (1k rows)

Those lists don't show full URLs. :(

Good! This means my battle is finally over. Every couple of months I go the round with them when someone uploads my work there. It's always done anonymously (or so they say...you have to register to upload mods and obviously their database keeps records, but that's the stance they take,) And it's most often an outdated version. I strongly dislike not having access to my mods.

I personally never got anything there that I couldn't find elsewhere. So it's no loss to me. In fact, I am claiming this a victory. I may not have had anything to do with it closing (unless you count my continual emails to various consumer sites,) but I sure as crap outlasted them. :goodjob:

Now, about the mods that are there. If we can identify the ones that were uploaded there legitimately with the author's approval and knowledge, I will gladly host them. I intend to have Morrowind Modding History up and running again very soon. Please either post links to such mods here so I can download them, or PM me about it.

Is that really true? I mean, can't any similar site end up a "major warez site" when its content is uploaded by users? I only knew it as the only reliable place to get Civ IV patches that don't take 5 years. Then again, I guess there's no denying that sites that have essentially zero oversight stand out as major sources of digital contraband, it's just the nature of things.

As long as it doesn't mean a net mod loss for us, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

Um, okay, seriously, A warez site? come on! Civ 4 mods are hosted via File Front. Most of them are well in excess of 100 megs. No group of good modders would even think of putting their files up on File Front if it had anything to do with Warez at all. :(

Seriously, I want proof here.
Also, I say this with apologies to Fliggerty and others, because while some mods may be put on it, it's not as bad as warez. I think.

Also, Filefront's the one with lots of blue right?

Yes, Filefront is nothing much more than a warez site.

Where PlanetElderScrolls is managed hosting, and so the mods make sure it's mods you're upping, Filefront is free hosting. And, just like Rapidshare, Megauload, Zshare, Adrive, Badongo, 2shared, iFolder, and the rest, they're full of warez. Not to mention that the traditional disregard/resistance of copyright by the administration has only promoted such files.

A lot of modders stay on the legal side of the internet, and so never see the illegal files. Obviously Filefront doesn't keep a special category, nor do they post the takedown messages they've received. There are large numbers of such files being stored on their servers, are they are far less prone to being removed for violation than any other site.

I'll provide what proof I can within the rules here, but, all you need is a good Google search for any game or movie, "full version", and filefront. The number of links you'll find will ruin any delusions you may hold. Or Google warez and filefront together. It's servers are, quite possibly, holding more illegal content than legal. The ok speeds and decent bandwidth limits made it popular back when Rapidshare cut you down to nothing.

Filefront used to be good, but their quality has fallen far. Anymore, this is no real loss.

Edit: Those searches do nothing. However, searching filefront and tehparadox, katz, phazeddl, or any other warez site will show you proof (mods: I'm not sure where this sentence stands rules-wise. If you have any objections, please censor it, or rephrase it to your liking)

Has anyone here actually ever used Filefront? I had never even heard of it until someone complained about it since one of their mods was uploaded there by 'anonymous' (as was one of my few releases I found out) for no apparent reason.

I doubt that we'll lose much when (if?) it closes, but I can't be certain.

I was not aware of these warez problems...
Learn something new everyday.

Okay, well, since it's still one of the major websites for Civ 4 Beyond the Sword mods, I'll probably PM a bunch of mod makers that I know and post a topic on the Civfanatics website, so their mods don't randomly disappear.

I was aware for quite some time the illegal things on Rapidshare and others and mostly porm..., but I was not aware that filefront was full of more illegal stuff than the DEA's evidence locker. :)

thats horrible! those that mean that planetelderscrolls closes too?

Unless Fileplanet makes this kind of announcement too, which I very much hope it won't, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

But anyway, thats unfortunate to hear, I fear this may cause many worthwhile downloads to disappear. But that being said, I can't think of many downloads I'd care about only available through Filefront, and those that are not available through other sources can be saved with this warning. To the Morrowind modding community at least, it seems Planet Elder Scrolls and ElricM are the favored hosting sources, so it shouldn't be too hard of a blow. If one of those sites went down, than the Morrowind modding community would suffer greatly.

Poetic justice that a site which leeches falls under... sadly some people thought that it was a legitimate host and hence we're going to lose things :stare:

That's a shame, I liked filefront. It was nice and easy to use and gave you good control over your files.

Unless someone else uploaded your files, sure <_<

I release most of my mods under "do-what-you-want" licenses, but I think I'll be making a strong emphasis in the future that the latest version can be found on PES (I should really put more of mine on ElricM and TESNexus, too).

Censored by me just in case, but the fact that the MW mods section was labelled "Morrowind (FULL INSTALL) Mods" (or similar) kinda says it all...

Surely they would email all their users? If I never read this forum I would have lost all my big mods that I hosted there.

Now I need to find somewhere else to host my files, I don't really want to use the database central location sites like PES, etc.

Fileplanet isn't going to make an announcement like this. They are far too massive to have any major money woes.

I agree, and considering the immense amount of mods that they have they would have warned
us way earlier. So personally i am not worried about Fileplanet.

Agree, there a alot of outdated mods. I defently like fileplanet 10 times more. But it'll be a little more loose for ofther games like KOTOR 1 & 2 and all the GTA mods. I'm about too download all the mods for GTA 3, Vice City and maybe San Andreas. But first efter I have finished my Morrowind and KOTOR 1+2 mods download. Soo I think I'll find my GTA mods elsewhere. I know a frind that have alot :)

Here is a little list of mods I'll submit either too PES or TES.Nexus soon:
Unofficial Tribunal Ending Movie by W4rbird (his site has been down seens Oct 2007) http://i41.tinypic.com/nx28fa.jpg from FileFront.
Mournhold Zoo by an unknown author.

FileFront, for me, was the best general resource for downloaders as it didn't make you jump through 5 advertising laden pages to download your file. Add to that a lack of under-handed interfaces that try and make you think you need to pay to use the service and they were a very respectable general resource (mod thieving on specific sub-sites aside).

Obviously in hindsight perhaps the reason why the site is going down is simply because they had a more respectable interface that didn't throw brightly coloured gloss in your face and make you jump through hoops just to get in an hour long download queue for a 10mb patch file. Or perhaps it's just because ZDM have proven they're rather incompetent with money.

R.I.P. FileFront. I have great respect for the people who designed the site.

It's a damn shame. I posted on Gaming Forums frequently and from one day to another everything is gone. I wonder where the community will move to. Hopefully not to ten different sites.

All the best to the staff that was laid off.

Just read they have 90 terabytes of data on their servers - only 2 more days to download as much as possible - lots of other good files there apart from MW - the Oblivion community had quite a lot of content there as well

Sad news indeed :nope:  :nope: One of the best reliable places for all sorts of downloads next to Tesnexus with its more underground selection.

Rather a stupid one since it would just be costing them more money with more people downloading, don't you think?
