Filefront is closing down on March 30th

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:44 am

Quick FYI )don't have much time, sorry):

According to http://farewell.filefront.com/, Filefront is suspending its service on March 30th.

Filefront hosts Morrowind mods on two sites:

http://browse.files.filefront.com/Elder+Scrolls+III+Morrowind+Modifications+/;1222981-0-02;/browsefiles.html
and
http://elderscrolls.filefront.com/files/The_Elder_Scrolls_III_Morrowind/Modifications;7095

So if there are mods on these sites which can't be gotten elsewhere, you should download them now.

If I ignore copyright, host warez under the guise of game files, ignore takedown notices, and generally abuse modder, will I get suspended too?
Or did they not do that?

Anyways, working on grabbing as much as I can. We'll see how far that gets.
Edit: A lot of those are at ElricM I know, and I think a large number of spread around too. IIRC, FileFront just leeches off other hosts, so I'm not gonna straight mirror it. Though it'll take longer to see what's up elsewhere...

Why would it?

PES has nothing to do with FileFront. PES uses FilePlanet though.

That's a shame, I liked filefront. It was nice and easy to use and gave you good control over your files.

PES is hosted by Fileplanet or some such I believe, so No, PES is fine.
It should be a priority to re-upload the mods which are not already up on Nexus and PES so that we dont lose everything like we did when Euro-RPG went down (or whatever the name of that site was) That was a real tradgedy.

If all of Filefront's content (which most of it appears to be) was just leeched from other sources, almost all of it is already up, it's just a matter of checking.
I know Filefront copies content from a many sites, regardless of posted copyright and requested take-downs... That is, if it's filefront I'm thinking of. Plus, they are a major warez site (nowhere near Rapidshare, but still well used).
It's no surprise they're going down, and not really an issue.

Since Yacoby has the ES Search database, it might be possible to find all mods that only exist on that site but not others. Then we could just grab the ones that are unique to that location.

That still really svcks though. This means that PES is going to have to find someone else to upload the mods to.

Haven't you been reading the thread? PES is Fileplanet, not Filefront.

Yes it is filefront you're thinking of. All of my mods are there without permission. Fliggerty has posted repeated warnings to the community concern his work being uploaded there despite repeated demands that they remove his content. From what I've seen almost none of the mods have credit to the author/artist. Filefront might have 1 or 2 files that are not available at PES, ElricM or GHF but it's unlikely.

FilePlanet is an entirely separate corporate entity. They are much larger, much more popular, and much more wide-spread than Filefront, and have a larger revenue base (e-magazines, middleware multiplayer systems, etc).

Filefront going down will not hurt Fileplanet. The most it can do is push more people towards PES, which is good, since they actually pay attention to usage terms.

I can't recall which ones exactly, but I've definitely found things on filefront that were not on any of the others. Mostly ones taken from smaller sites that aren't available anymore.

What might be very useful is for someone to fairly quickly compile a list of FileFront's Morrowind holdings.
It will save duplication of effort and provide a measure of what we have managed to salvage [hopefully all not available elsewhere] or lost.

What? Wouldn?t have thought that they have to close, but I say, it?s no big loss. I haven?t used them for a long time now, their dls were slow. I won?t miss them.

ES Search has Filefront indexed right? Doesn't that mean Yacoby could pull out the list and show it to everyone so that we could attempt to get all the stuff off of there that isn't in other places already?

Is that really true? I mean, can't any similar site end up a "major warez site" when its content is uploaded by users? I only knew it as the only reliable place to get Civ IV patches that don't take 5 years. Then again, I guess there's no denying that sites that have essentially zero oversight stand out as major sources of digital contraband, it's just the nature of things.

As long as it doesn't mean a net mod loss for us, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

Um, okay, seriously, A warez site? come on! Civ 4 mods are hosted via File Front. Most of them are well in excess of 100 megs. No group of good modders would even think of putting their files up on File Front if it had anything to do with Warez at all. :(

Seriously, I want proof here.
Also, I say this with apologies to Fliggerty and others, because while some mods may be put on it, it's not as bad as warez. I think.

Also, Filefront's the one with lots of blue right?
