Final Boss

Post » Fri Oct 15, 2010 4:12 pm

So what do you guys think for a final boss in the main quest? I was thinking of a Head Dragon. What would you guys want to see as a final boss in the main quest? Do you even want a final boss?

Yes to the dragon thing. I hated how the final boss was fought for us in Oblivion.

I have absolutely no idea.

I can't imagine Alduin being the final boss, unless you consider Mehrunes Dagon to be the final boss and not Mankar Camoran. Regardless, we can't kill Alduin, so I don't really know what will happen. It's one of the few things I'm actually concerned about for Skyrim.

Yes, Alduin (Also known as Akatosh) Will be the main "bad guy", which we've known since Dec. I believe. However, he's the God of Time, so I don't think we'll "kill" him, we'll probably just stop him from eating the world (some how.)

And, since he's a god, I doubt he'll just be a bigger than normal dragon, probably something more.

Something like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5x2qan5SVg (watch it, not the same as normal version of the battle)
Except he also turns into a dragon at some point :tops:

I honestly don't care who or what the "final boss" is- as long as for once we actually get to fight them ourselves instead of being Martin's [censored] or running past Dagoth Ur to fight the Chicken Heart...er, Heart of Lorkhan.

Looks pretty accurate. I hope something like that happens.

I'm confident that the MQ has the Dovahkiin, us, pitted against the divine might that is Alduin in a totally one-on-one epic battle to the destruction. Not the death, the destruction, since technically the Time God can't die, and it isn't over until the Dovahkiin is victorious.

That said, if anything robs me of that shining, glorious moment where I single-handedly send Alduin back to where he came from, I will quit this damn series forever. Not even a visit to Summerset Isle will draw me back in, I mean it, I will be DONE.

That's quite harsh!

Though I must admit, I'm really, really, really hoping that the Dovahkiin will turn into the avatar of Shor, a giant scarab, and rip Alduin a new one. I'd nerdgasm.

But I try not to think about it too much so I'm not disappointed when it doesn't happen.

You have no idea how the crap Oblivion ending burned me. I got robbed man. :P

Seriously though, there's nothing more important to me in games like these than being the epic hero. They give me this huge sprawling world, filled with dangers few can handle, and a disaster on its way that only I can stop. That is what glory is made of, what makes legends of men and women alike. I don't get to do that stuff in real life, on Earth I'm just a nerd with long hair and a talent for writing. But in Tamriel, in Faerun, in the year 20XX, I can do anything. I can fly, shoot lightning like the Emperor, summon strange creatures, battle huge robots, you name it. In gaming I get to be the guy who saves world. Not the guy finds someone to do it. It's up to me, and me alone.

So bring it on Bethesda, I'm ready to show the Dragon God of Time what it is to mess with one seriously pissed-off Orc.

Maybe we'll have to fight him musically, by gathering the bards from that Bard College, Dwemer instruments recovered from the ruins, the Greybeards and the player singing along with their dragon shouts, and that http://www.imperial-library.info/content/etada-eight-aedra-eat-dreamer which makes people vaporize that the Empire has in their secret weapon storage.

I just hope for it to be nothing less than a complete MINDSCREW of final confrontation, that will leaves us deliriously bedazzled long after the finale, while keeping us perturbed for just what of the future holds for Mundus from the outcome (read: wild mass guessing for TES:VI plot lines!). But not some also-ran God of War / Demons Souls epic boss fights please. That's an hors d'oeuvre in comparison.

I do hope we get to fight Alduin single-handedly. That'd just be so so so epic.

It must be a mindshattering clash of powers that decide the fate of Nirn, something similar in scope/insanity as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B09qyRzXU_4 but hopefully not as hard.

Remember that Bethesda doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to bosses. Morrowind and Oblivion's bosses at the end of the main quests didn't end with the fanfare they deserved. The first Dagoth Ur stood in a plain looking room and went down too easily, and wasn't even a factor when destroying the heart in his second appearance. I suppose Mankor was the final "boss" in Oblivion since you never got to fight Dagon, just run from him. And who can forget the disaster that was Augustus Autumn and 2 enclave soldiers in Fallout 3. In fairness, they do better in expansions (Almalexia, Hircine, and Jyggylag or however you spell it). In the end, Bethesda seems to focus more on the journey then the destination. Then again, boss battle are really tough to do in RPG's it seems. Even looking back to the KotoR series, Jade Empire, etc., they svcked there too.

Wow.... lots of well-articulated passion in this thread....

I would hope that Beth isn't going to give us another deus ex machina ending, but c'mon - we're up against a god. Dovahkiin or not, I don't see any way that we're going to kill a god. I'm hoping they'll be able to pull off something exciting and involving - at the very least more so than scurrying between Dagon's feet then watching a cutscene - but it seems that weak endings are as much a TES tradition as starting in prison.

Keeping my fingers crossed.....

I'd fancy it with a bit more of fireworks and series of borderline wtf-ery parts, myself.
edit: I see what you did there. Time traveling, heh? I'm game for that too.

Off-topic: didn't played that game myself but knew a bit of the storyline from my more "dedicated gamer" pals about it, but boy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C5GZq9q0eA&NR=1 crushingly stark yet poetic or what? (Definitely falls on the "your mileage may vary" territory, I admit, but I just love it somehow. But lets disregard the sickeningly saccharine "thank you for playing!" bit, please)

The funny thing is, that final "bad" ending actually ended up being used to create the story/background of an entirely different game they made called Nier...which had an even more tragic storyline.

But yes, I most certainly would like it to be epic, but the difficulty of course is how they can justify it. As far as we know, we are only slightly better than a normal mortal really..in order for a direct, final clash to work, either Alduin would have to be drastically neutered in power somehow, or we would have to somehow be empowered to his level. Because in all honesty, I don't see us convincing him to give up his design with pretty little mortal words.

I hope Aldiun will try to eat you and then you just jump in his mouth and he swallows you and you end up in his stomach.
Then you have to fight your way out from the inside out :D!
