Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:12 am

I'm looking to play through Oblivion on my new PC i'm building before I start on Skyrim. I'm making a mod list and would like any recommendations on better/updated versions or if you have any suggestions that would fill out the list I would appreciate it. Or if there is one I don't need also :) I have all the DLC and SI if there are any mods that I should get for them.

Try my SDR - Sneaking Detection Recalibrated mod. Cutting edge revamp of the whole stealth and detection system. You can find the thread on this forum, and can download it at TESNexus or Planet Elder Scrolls

Looks like a pretty decent list, and I see you noted the essential utilities, which is a great start. I would highly recommend taking a look at my blog, since a few of the mods you mentioned there are discussed and elaborated on in more detail there. Since you have an interest in those, I'm sure you would find the rest of my posts just as intriguing. You can get there by clicking on the second link in my signature. Good luck, and I hope it helps!

Your list looks really good to me. You might want some of the quests, like Lost Spires, but those really depend on personal preference, so I'm not going to recommend any, other than improvements of existing quests.

My essentials that you don't list
--------------------------------------------------
All Natural
Reneers Guard Overhaul
Realistic Fatigue
Realistic Health
Drop-Lit Torches (OBSE Version, configurable)

My near essentials that you don't list
--------------------------------------------------
Persuasion Overhaul (OBSE)
CM Partners + Add-Ons
Enhanced Daedric Invasion
Kvatch Rebuilt
Enhanced Economy
Harvest Flora v3.01+
Frostcrag Revisited
Mannimarco Revisited
Unique Landscapes

CM Partners is almost a cheat, and I'm mostly a solo player, but it's nice. Unique Landscapes, as your probably know, can devour FPS, but is amazing IMHO. I really like Realistic Fatigue, and can't imagine playing without it at the moment. It makes combat more difficult, and requires some fatigue management/planning, at least at low-mid levels.

Nooo you're going to make me feel guilty about delaying finishing my mod compendium website to actually play the game some. Anyway:

Detailed Terrain
Immersive Interiors on top of All Natural
Animated Window Lighting System (also Illumination Within)
All the ImpeREAL mods (Forts, Castles, and Districts)
Enhanced Daedric Invasion
Arthmoor's Villages + New Roads and Bridges
Crowded Roads Revisited, Tamriel Travelers, Immersive Travelers
Enhanced Vegetation
Wayshrines Improved
Improved Armoury
NPC New Clothes Modified, Cyrodiil NPC Remodeling Project, Hemingwey's Capes
John's Leveled List Overhaul
Mythic Textures (Animals, Creatures, Ghosts and Goblins, SI soon)

And skip Enhanced Water and get OBGE Liquid Water! light years ahead of all water mods!

Also my road texture lolol

I actually had been reading it, before that last hiatus.

@Palidoo & @panurgy Thanks there are a couple on your lists that I immediately was like "oh yeah I forgot about that" I'll take a look at the others, thanks!

My current checklist for my last build before Skyrim, my 4th playthrough overall. A couple things may be missing as my true list right now is my BAIN install order in wrye bash but this is the list I was primarily using while downloading the mods originally. Ignore the little makeshift checkboxes those were for my reference at the time. The couple of mods without them are ones I am still looking into and am undecided on or I may install later.

I see Supreme Magicka and Midas Magic in your list. There a couple of not-as-well-known alternatives that may interest you:

"Fearsome magicka". This is, for me, the most impressive magic mod out there. Its spells are unique, most of the times impressive and, above all, useful. 2 quick examples: "combat telekinesis". Cast the spell on a foe and any object lying nearby will be thrown at him. It causes staggers (if the object was say a varla stone) or knock downs/instant kills if objects are heavy weapons. Another spell: "magic missiles". 2 to 5 magic projectiles (depending on your destruction level) that are casted on target. The projectiles never miss (they will follow the target if he moves from his original position). Fearsome Magicka has more than 20 spells -that are use both by you and NPC's

"Duke Patrick's combat magic". This one implements a whole new way of using magic that, again can be used by you and the NPCs. The cornerstone of the mod is a magic shield that allows for spell deflection (yes, you can now block spells and even send them back to the original casters!). The magic shield is raised by pressing the block button at the right moment. Duke Patrick's combat magic has MANY other features as well.

This is my modlist and I'm very happy with it, only current problems I have are that some stuff is in German from the Unfinished Warcry ND translation and the Arena guild quest can't be completed without going to the testing hall but besides that it has much more variety and realism then FCOM which is also excellent.

I need to use Combat magic when I start playing Oblivion seriously again. For now I don't really want to quest too much since I'm my modlist keeps changing too frequently for me to start any serious games.

- ImpeREAL does it conflict

Conflict with what? The forts, castles, and districts are all compatible with one another. The districts will probably definitely be incompatible with Better Cities, and the castles might be as well. As for other mods, I don't know any off the top of my head. There might be some that use the same locations as the forts, but I haven't heard about it.

- All or one? (Crowded Roads Revisited, Tamriel Travelers, Immersive Travelers)

I use all of them, but I use the spawn rate modifiers for Crowded Roads Revisited to make the lowest possible amount of travelers spawn, 5% I think. Otherwise combined with the other mods you end up with way too many people on the road. It's up to you, though.

Haha

ImpeREAL Unique Forts shouldn't conflict with UL at all, none of the forts are in spots modified by UL as far as I know.

I cant belive that no one has sudgested Deadly Reflex and/or Unessisary Violence two great mods for combat and personaly two mods I cant play without. Also since you already use wrye bash why not upgrade to FCOM? If you are looking for another quest related mod I would recomend Verona House Bloodlines. For freshening up the land scapes Ill second using Unique Landscapes and I would also recomend Better Cities. Over all you have a good list.

Tiny lampe
- Is fearsome magicka better than Supreme Magicka?

First of all they are compatible so you can use both without problems.

As for which one is better, consider this:

Supreme Magicka (SM) enhances vanilla magic in four ways:

a) Vanilla spells will be more damaging and last longer

B) Vanilla spells will have extra effects and advantages. Some examples: spells casted in sneak mode have a sneak bonus, fire spells have a chance of staggering enemies, telekenises can now push (or pull) enemies under certain circunstances, dispel spells now damage summons and light spells hurt vampires. The list is long.

c) Some new spells are added. Their purpose is to overhaul those magic schools that were not terribly useful. Levitation and teleportation are added to Mysticism, as well as a spell that damages mages each time they cast a spell. Alteration now allows to repart weapons and armors (so that mages don't have to rely on repair hammers). The list is also long.

d) there is an .ini file in which you can customize additional options like how fast your magicka regenerates or how many magicka points you earn when your intelligence increases in 1 point.

Fearsome Magicka (FM), on the other hand, doesn't focus on improving what is there (vanilla spells) but on creating something new from scratch. This 'new thing' comes in two parts:

1) New spells and, above all, new spell effects. This distinction is important and will be much better understood if you watch the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgkE0b88jJg
Have you seen the teleportation spell? FM is not the only mod that has it but it IS the only one that has added this very nice visual effect each time you cast it. With other spells like combat telekinesis or fire storm both the effect and the spell mechanics are unique.

2. New magic system. Vanilla spells can be casted as long as you have enough magicka and the right skill level. This is not true with FM spells. They have cooldown times. This means that, for example, a very powerful spell like "time stop" not only requires 100 mysticism and a certain amount of magicka; it is scripted so that, once you cast it x times, you will need to rest (meaning sleep) a certain number of hours before being able to cast it again. This ultimately means that you can't spam FM spells as if they were low level fireballs. They are not.

So, CONCLUSION, after this long post: if you are starting from the very beginning (i.e. level 1 character) use both! you will not be able to cast many FM spells when you start so you will need SM as your main weapon.

The other thing to consider with magic mods is that since you have the Integration quest mod on your list, you'll need to use the Less Annoying Magic Experience (LAME) mod as well. I know that can be made to play nice with some of the other magic mods, like SM, but you'd need to research its compatibility with some of the others.

As far as other recommendations go, it really depends on how you like the play the game and what mods you've played with before. Is there stuff you don't like about the game that needs fixing, are you interested in new quests, just seeing new sights, content focused towards a particular class, etc.?

LAME is hidden on TES Nexus right now so I can't look up what it works with per the author

I hoped that by listing the mods I intended to use it would give a more accurate picture of what I was interested in. But I'll try and give it my 30 sec speech :)

I usually play a Dunmer spellswordish type but end up doing everything
What I'm looking for on this last go through is a thorough kinda do everything experience
I would like mods that expand on the game, but I don't want to spend all my time finding mods to use and not playing so I'm just trying to keep it to the top tier mods or big good groupings (i.e. armamentarium)

I can't exactly explain it but that kinda what I'm going for lol

I think using magic mods and combat mods like Deadly Reflex unbalance the game, however saying that I do use No recoil, No stagger, Timed Blocking and Duke Patricks combat archery mod but that makes the combat much more aggresive and procise, makes fights actually rewarding and challenging without the flashy unrealistic movements of Deadly Reflex.

I do hope Duke Patrick eventually makes a new version of SCA combat since 5.1 was the only version I played and was told it was pretty old and crappy compared to his newer revisions which is why I stopped using it.
