Is it finally over?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:30 am

Are we finally able to put a stop to all of the pip-boy stock topics?

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/fallout-4-studio-cannot-make-any-more-pip-boy-coll/1100-6429223/

Bethesda literally cannot make any more. If you got one you got one, if you didn't you didn't. If you want one now, you now have confirmed news that sitting around hoping for more to be made will end poorly.

Your options now are to try and scoop up any potentially cancelled orders come release, or the less popular route of playing the scalper's games.

Either way, best of luck to anyone.

It's not like it's difficult to send the moldings to China. I'm sure they'd be happy to push them out by the millions at a production cost of $0.48 a piece. Just ask Walmart.

Tho I doubt they can push it out at the quality Beth wants, especially since its not just the actual pip boy to worry about, its all the other goodies to.

That's an entirely different question. Blankly stating that no more can possibly be made because "max capacity reached" is false. Not that I give a flying goose.

Same thing could be said about plenty of collector's edition items.

Not like it's ever been the case however.

It makes no sense to sell an item as a collector's piece, be limited to a certain quantity in production, and then move on to producing more from another supplier later.

Heh. "PipBoy". I wonder if you'll also need to find a compatible smartphone you can connect into your "PipBoy" in game.

Are you implying that isn't the case with the cheap shiny plasticky toys they have distributed so far?

You do realize the Beth store has it clearly listed as Pip-Boy

http://store.gamesas.com/fallout-4-pip-boy-edition.html

Don't know if you were trying to be snide there.

Yeah, pretty much. Considering it's never been the case with anything else, I think it'd be wishful thinking on the part of anyone who still thinks a re-stock might be down the line.

Have they stopped?

Well, thanks to a certain muppet, unfortunately they saw a sudden small resurgence.

The irony, I know :(

I'm hoping it puts to rest the questions about the potential for any re-stocks in the future though.

Yeah, they did, which is an obvious lie as all they sell is a smarphone case and some software for your phone, not a complete device. They can violate the lore all they want, but I doubt they'll change what a PipBoy is.

I'm sure if someone really wants it they can just make a 3D-print model for it.

Never. Some schmuck in a week will post another topic because they don't wanna bother wading through topics looking for the answer.

It is getting so incredibly easy, especially if you have 3D modelling software.

Though neither the printer nor that software is cheap.

Anybody got a 3D printer that can interpret Solidworks designs, I would be happy to make you a Pip Boy (some assembly required).

Note that this item has already been "duplicated" by 3D printing modelers (from internet images, it sure appears these have been made LONG before Bethesda thought of it) and is an ideal application for 3D printing. Note that the quality of the 3D printed ones would be questionable (depending on what they used for material...I'm assuming some sort of Nija Flex / rubberized material) but on the other hand 3D prints would allow for customization, in both fit sizing and phones they could hold.

Just saying that this is NOT an item that can't be "replicated" beyond those available by Bethesda (sans the collect-ability aspect) but comes with all kinds of "buyer beware" caveats....

Do want to point out one thing: Pete Hines can only speak only speak for the Beth store in terms of what they have sold as well as how many units they have produced. What he most likely doesn't know and even acknowledged is whether or not other retailers made all of their allocation available for pre-orders already. That means there is still a possibility, for now, that more Pip Boy editions can be purchased somewhere down the road or even at launch. However, I'm not too optimistic on the likelihood of that event.

Didn't Pete Hines say weeks ago no more would be made?

Yes, but people were still waiting around hoping for a re-stock down the road.

Now hopefully people will realize that not only is Bethesda not having more produced, they can't have any more produced.

They probably don't own the mould tools. It's not uncommon for the injection moulding company to keep ownership.

They may not even own the drawings, assuming another company was contracted to design the thing.

Again, a completely separate issue. If they wanted more, they can get more.

Pretty sure the factory he's talking about IS in China..... Factories overseas book production runs on a schedule, while they may be able to run over and increase the output at the end of a run, they can't do it indefinitely an certainly will not do a 2nd run without a significant delay and/or the rather large setup fees involved.

Now what happens to the molds after a production run of a particular product is over is questionable and the subject of LOTS of knockoff products coming out of China discussions....

The parent company of my employer does LOTS of work with overseas factories and while the contract with the factory would likely stipulate how the modlds and any reusable or left over materials would be handled the norm is for those molds are usually to be destroyed (for a model that is discontinued) and the remains are shipped to whomever owns the design of the part. The factory does not want the mold being used at other factories and the owner doesn't want the mold ending up at a knock off house.
