Finally played the main game without a freeze

(posting on PS3, please excuse this being broken into seperate posts)

I've been an owner of the GOTY edition for the PS3 for over a year now. I've not been trying all this time to get it to work right...mostly due to frustration caused by my nerd rage...but I've been tinkering with different methods, and either I got lucky or I found something.

There are different methods to how people try to "fix" this game. Some believe it to be fixable through options. Me, I think it's a gameplay issue. This, to me, explains why some have problems while other do not. It's about how you play the game.

The thing to keep in mind is that Fo3 wants to keep track of everything. Rememeber that school you cleared out? Yeah, it's keeping track of that. You need to keep it simple.

While the PS3 has the ability to run Fo3 awesome, it's a port. For the PS3 to run Fo3 the way it should, we're talking about them basicly creating an entire new game. So, yeah, it's a software issue, but one you can work around.

1) Pack Light
I suffer from a form of gamer OCD. I Wuuuuv collecting items. This is pretty much the main thing I changed with my last game. I still cleared the heck out of every area I visited, but I sold everything. You see, once you sell something, it's pretty much going to be forgotten by the game. It's much easier to remember there's 128,361,957 of one thing than 1 of each thing.

Find a suit of armor that you like best untill you find a new one, and use the caps you make from selling to repair it. Sell everything else.

Want to collect items to make things at the workbench? Fine. Select one schematic. Sell everything else.

PIck a gun-type at the begining. Pick a weapon and grab a mele. Sell everything else.

Pick up everything in Megaton you can and sell it. Get it out of there. This includes your house. I hope you like bare walls.

Look at items like you're doing your part to pick up litter. Give a Hoot. man. Give a freakin' hoot.

2) Play Light
I found myself busy with life (yeah, I know, right?), and as such I was tapped for time. I would fire up my PS3, load up my game, hit an area, fast-travel all the swag back, sell/repair all, set-up for the next hit, save, and then shut-down.

Each run took about 2-hours, mostly due to my before-mentioned OCD. I...I really need to pick-up every book in the schoolhouse. I blame my parents.

3) Keep it Light
The third thing I did different was I concentrated upon the main story, and only occomplished a few of the side-missions. Pick a side. You're either going to finish the game, or you're going to finish all the sides.

I suggest focusing upon the main story and doing different sides each time.

Hey, it's kind of like dinner. Sure, it all looks good, but just order what you need. Don't be the guy asking for a bucket in some Monty Python sketch.

Not that I've anything against buckets. Some of my best friends are buckets.

5) Got a Light?
And that's really it. When I hit an area, I hit it hard, but I kept it down. I gave up trying to acomplish everything, trying to collect everything, and trying to "beat" the whole game in one play.

This game beat me. It had me crushed and wimpering.

Once I decided to fully give-up....I had the best time I ever had with it. During the entire run, I experienced only slight slows and no freeze.

So, now I leave it all up to you. Do I have something, or was I just lucky?

Sorry, it was meant as a joke. I was in a jovial mood, and being this is a bit of a heartbreaking topic...sorry for the confusion.

It's a referance to a beer commercial. "Bud Light! Tastes great and is less filling!"

I think you are correct, my good sir. Makes sense to me, anyway. Last time I played F3 I had pretty much done the same in hopes that I would be able to complete the MQ. However, half-way through the MQ I started doing DLC and mass-collecting weapons. I noticed an immediate difference when I had just a few guns and some melee items compared to a [censored]-load of....everything. I'm a little OCD myself when it comes to this game.

The thing I hear most is about "memory leaks" in the Gamebryo software. So, I'm guessing memory isn't the greatest in this game. Anything cutting down on it should make it more playable, so this is probably not because you got "lucky".

? You don't have to start a thread over a question to do with someone else's thread... if that makes sense. it's perfectly reasonable to ask a question to the OP or anyone else who's posted in the thread, as long as it's on topic.

edit: Oh, and to answer your question, yes, I'm pretty sure that's what he means. Just try and cut back on the amount of loot you move around, so the game isn't trying to remember where it all is.

Pretty much, but I don't think you need to play like a nomad.

I suggest printing out a list of the items used in making items. There's really only a handful of them. All other items you need to sell. They serve no other purpose. Of the items you make, sell your creations unless you plan on using them.

Weapons and armor are a little different. To maximise caps, you'll want to repair them before selling, which means collecting them. As long as your keeping up with consolodating them through repairing and then selling them, you should be fine.

Food items can stock up very quickly. Sell them all except the nuka colas and quantums, if you're wanting to complete the related quest.

Wear the best armor you can. Carry the best weapon you can. You'll soon be rolling in caps, and so can afford to hire out repairing these if need be.

Sell, sell, sell.
