Finally playing Oblivion again with a lot of trouble :(

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:22 pm

With, first of all, a *clean* uninstall each time?

I guess, who knows, that might be worth a shot. But it's unlikely. While I've heard of a couple of potential problems with the latest ATI drivers (Catalyst 10.6, that is, in case anyone else is reading this ;) ) I haven't heard anything of like kind about the latest Nvidia offering. But then, I'm using an ATI card, so I mightn't be quite as up to date on those.

Yes i always uninstalled it clean, all DLC files too.

Nvidia has the same problems with the newest drivers. Most time the beta drivers are better then the final drivers

-Uninstall again and wipe out your Bethesda/Oblivion/Data directory, then erase the Oblivion folder found in Documents/My Games.
-Defrag your Hard Drive
-When you reinstall the game again, be sure to install all DLCs and to pick up the latest official patch (SI patch 1.2.0416).
-Defrag again.
-Start a new game.

*This is the part when you try Vanilla game as said gothemasticator above*

-Install Wrye Bash (refer to the official thread), OBMM and OBSE.
-Start a new game again.
-Install Unofficial Oblivion Patch and the Supplemental Patch, then the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch and again the Unofficial Mods Patch
-Begin to install Graphic mods.
-Then install ONE overhaul mod.
-Then all other mods.
Now try to play and see if it crashes again

EDIT: Are you using the STEAM version of the game?

As stated above. Never mind...

Except I would try starting a new game at each step beyond basic patching and stuff like that. So, after your graphics mods, if that's what you're adding first, fire up Oblivion, see how it goes (also, how it looks!) :) Certainly, if you've put an overhaul in place, test immediately. And so on...

Ok i defraged my Harddrive, installed Oblivion and run it COMPLETLY vanilla no Patch nothing. Just Oblivion.
Result: Bluescreen of Death "nv4_disp.dll" :nuke: :cold: :ooo: :celebration:

Maybe a DDR2 Ram damage?

Well i think something must be wrong with my Settings or my System. Even vanilla Oblivion isn't running well. I get a Bluescreen (nv4_disp.dll) or the typical "Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close."

That sounds like graphics card driver issues to me. Try using a driver cleaner utility (like http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/driver-cleaner-pro-download-1878.shtml) to remove all traces of the old driver. Then install new driver.

Actually, the instructions below, from http://howtobyte.blogspot.com/2009/05/nv4dispdll-blue-screen-error-fix.html, are pretty good.
Spoiler

THE FIX

Install Driver Cleaner Professional.
Uninstall your current nvidia drivers.
Reboot windows in safe mode.
After rebooting, windows will auto-detect the graphics card and try to install drivers for it. Just cancel it.
Run Driver Cleaner Pro and under ‘Cleaning Selection’ menu select ‘nVidia’.
Hit ‘Start’.(This would delete the driver files and registry entries.)
Reboot Windows in safe mode.
Install the latest nvidia drivers.(Get me there) [84.21 drivers works best in most cases]
Boot windows normally.

hope that helps,

That DLL is definitely a drivers issue. You need to reinstall it or something. No wonder they system was crashing...

Edit: FYI: That is a common error, not just an Oblivion thing. All you have to do is search "nv4_disp.dll". I had an error related to that a couple years ago too.

Ok the game was running fine. I could play 30minutes now without CTD. But now the same thing again. I don't think it has something to do with the driver. I did everything like on the link "clean boot" "remove old driver with a cleaner" "install newest driver". I get a CTD if i load a game , if i walk around and that random, after 5seconds after 1minute.... If this is going like that the next time i will stop playing Oblivion......its sad because its a great game but unstable and not playable. :sadvaultboy:  :shakehead:

I still don't think it is the game. It sounds like a hardware or operating system problem.

You've stated in this thread that even totally unmodded Oblivion exhibits problems. So, it is reasonable to suppose that mods have nothing to do with the problems.

The .dll error and crashes you report suggest to me operating system errors, or possibly hardware problems.

Some suggestions:
  • You could try reinstalling your operating system.
  • You could verify that your power supply is adequate and fully functional.
  • You could uninstall and reinstall your graphics card.

I just don't see the problem originating in mods or even in Oblivion itself.

Ok its me again......

My Graphic card (GeForce 8800GTS) is now complete broken (After 4 years). It didn't get identified by my System.
Now i bought a new one, a ATI HD Radeon 5770 with 1GB DDR5 RAM.

Problem: I completly installed Oblivion again with KOTN and SI Addon. Started the "Vanilla" game without any Mods, just the latest official Patches.
Then i saw already in the Menu the FRAPS were swinging around up to 70 down to 10 again up and down and that the whole time (maybe 2minutes)
and then i get a CTD. Isn't the game compatible with that Graphic Card??

I can't solve it, already deleted all old nVidia drivers with driver cleaner in safe mode. My last idea will be to completly defrag my Harddrive.
Anyone has a other solution??

My System:
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual
Core Prossesor 6000+
3.01GHz 3,50GB RAM

Windows XP
Service Pack 3

Yes i formated my PC yesturday again and its still not working, Windows just hang up in random time. No matter what i am doing.
Gave my PC now to a PC Shop so he can take a look. I have no ideas anymore. Everything on the PC is new. Mainboard , CPU , Cooler , Powersupply , Graphic card , 4GB DDR2.
