If we find life elsewhere in the Solar System...

Post » Mon Aug 31, 2009 6:20 pm

I pray that we change our ways if we ever get into space. We are such a stupid little species that we don't even deserve to be that advanced. Everything we advance in will end up being perverted into some weapon or war machine.

And to people saying they wouldn't rally behind humans if we went to war with another species, because they have what we NEED, or some other reasons, you would. You can oppose it as much as you want, but instinct and age old psychology is irresistible. It's Us vs. Them. You are not one of Them, you're one of Us.

All hail the fascist space-oligarchs! Wow, the future's looking bleak, isn't it? Unless we acheive trancendence and leave our mortal forms, pretty much every avenue looks like history is either repeating itself or taking the piss.

Well, I mean, I doubt we're gonna become this peaceful utopia when we spread to the stars. If we ever colonize out there, it'll probably be like MechWarrior or Dune.

I think a major, often overlooked problem would be microscopic pathogens, and the fact that organisms on either side would not likely have any resistance to such pathogens a different planet or moon.

Like everyone else has said, our pathogens have evolved to attack us. They wouldn't do much to an organism that doesn't have DNA or similar proteins/body systems. Same goes for alien pathogens.

Well, that's a relief.

Or maybe because I don't want our species to die out. I'd kill alien babies if our survival depended on it.

I'll let that statement be a testament to your moral values.

Personally, I find infanticide to be a bad thing, I prefer not killing babies, but I guess you don't agree.

I'm looking forward to the day when reality will become something like a game of Mass Effect.

But not in our lifetime brah.

Haaving read this thread, I must say I wouldn't trust any of you to carry humainty to the stars. The general consensus seems to be to annihiliate all of human culture and put us under the heel of some spacefaring oligarchs. To hell with that. I'd sooner humanity were destroyed than forget what humanity was in the first place.

Well if we have been this "uncivil" for this long I think what we are now would best describe humanity. People say that if we were to eliminate the alien culture or what have you, then we would be losing our humanity. But really, anything we do is humanity, we are diverse and humanity isn't just one characteristic, its what defines every human; greedy, generous, hateful, loving, etc. No matter what we do we are still human.

should we have the capability to make contact with other life(with chances of that being like a snowball in the realm of satan) it may result in research, if this life is as developed as us, or is far more developed, i would like to see a trading of culture and technology.

If Aliens are hostile, it probably has to do with resources, they probably have been to more planets than us, and they probably have been alive for much longer, odds are they are far more powerful than we would be at that time. we can never tell just how many planets they have been to, and with earth being one with as much life on it, we should consider ourselves lucky...

Why would they probably bee more advanced than us? There is no probably, for all we know if they are intelligent they might be still using blunt weapons or might not even have the capability to soar space yet. Hell, we COULD be the most advanced species yet but people just dont realize it. Every civilization has to start somewhere no? Who is to say we aren't the farthest in technology in this universe? (should there be other life in this universe)

And you know this how?

You've studied Alien Diseases? I'd really like to know how you did this.....

Anyways, I have no opinion right now. If we do indeed find life, we'd have to see what our current situation on Earth is, before assimilating anything.

Chances are once we are ready and capable to leave the solar system, we'll encounter sapient life, or at least non-microbial life, pretty quickly. I think this because the whole point of looking for extrasolar planets is to find one very similar to earth. We haven't found one yet, but when we do, you can bet your ass that it'll be one of the first extrasolar planets we travel to, and if it's enough like Earth, chances are good it will have life, and maybe even intelligent life.

Even visiting a system a few light years away would be a huge project; the probe would have to be able to make its own decisions, because it'd be too far away to receive orders from Earth.

It's the best possible answer with knowledge of how disease and evolution work.

Actually, we have found several planets similar to earth(or at least the light coming to earth from those planets shows they once were). They are just currently too far away to travel to.

We haven't. We have found promising planets, but we haven't found a planet that we can be sure is like earth. These planets meet several qualifications to be like earth, but those planets also have characteristics that, if our technology was advanced enough to directly observe, may reveal them to be very unlike earth.

We can't be sure they're like Earth completely, but I'll take promising as at least partially earth-like. Earth-like planets are out there.

While I don't agree with you about the actions one should take to preserve humanity(I couldn't and wouldn't kill anything), the statement I am quoting does reflect nature. Humans naturally want to ensure humanity survives. It's a natural way of thinking. Survival is the instinct of all animals. Humans are no different.

I'd prefer if those cultureless spacers went elsewhere and left the humans to it on earth.

This, although I believe we should examine said life from afar and learn what we can without interfering. :P

We should do it by kidnapping random members of the least intelligent and/or most outcast of their species, and spread rumours about inserting objects into sensitive cavities!

The only reason we haven't been invaded is because they think we're a bunch of drunk fishermen and bovines, with no military hardware beyond shotguns and walking sticks.
