I Find Your Lack Of Faith Disturbing

Post » Sat Oct 15, 2011 9:02 pm

I remember reading about traveling priests in Skyrim that cure your diseases. This is an unbelievably cool addition to the game, and I hope we see other religious orders. I want to see things like zealots for Talos that kill the unbelievers, or have a convent of friendly monks worshipping Mara or something. A religious faction would be great as well, so you could RP a holy character banishing evil.

What do you guys want to see, discuss!

Alduin
(World Eater) Alduin is the Nordic variation of Akatosh, and only superficially resembles his counterpart in the Eight Divines. For example, Alduin's sobriquet, 'the world eater', comes from myths that depict him as the horrible, rauaging firestorm that destroyed the last world to begin this one. Nords therefore see the god of time as both creator and harbinger of the apocalypse. He is not the chief of the Nordic pantheon (in fact, that pantheon has no chief; see Shor, below) but its wellspring, albeit a grim and frightening one.
Dibella
(Goddess of Beauty) Popular god of the Eight Divines. In Cyrodiil, she has nearly a dozen different cults, some devoted to women, some to artists and aesthetics, and others to erotic instruction.
Orkey
(Old Knocker) A loan-god of the Nords, who seem to have taken up his worship during Aldmeri rule of Atmora. Nords believe they once lived as long as Elves until Orkey appeared; through heathen trickery, he fooled them into a bargain that 'bound them to the count of winters'. At one time, legends say, Nords only had a lifespan of six years due to Orkey's foul magic. Shor showed up, though, and, through unknown means, removed the curse, throwing most of it onto the nearby Orcs.
Tsun Extinct Nordic god of trials against adversity. Died defending Shor from foreign gods
Mara
(Goddess of Love) Nearly universal goddess. Origins started in mythic times as a fertility goddess. In Skyrim, Mara is a handmaiden of Kyne. In the Empire, she is Mother-Goddess. She is sometimes associated with Nir of the 'Anuad', the female principle of the cosmos that gave birth to creation. Depending on the religion, she is either married to Akatosh or Lorkhan, or the concubine of both.
Stuhn
(God of Ransom) Nordic precursor to Stendarr, brother of Tsun. Shield-thane of Shor, Stuhn was a warrior god that fought against the Aldmeri pantheon. He showed Men how to take, and the benefits of taking, prisoners of war
Kyne
(Kiss At the End) Nordic Goddess of the Storm. Widow of Shor and favored god of warriors. She is often called the Mother of Men. Her daughters taught the first Nords the use of the thu'um, or Storm Voice.
Jhunal
(Rune God) The Nordic god of hermetic orders. After falling out of favor with the rest of that pantheon, he became Julianos of the Eight Divines. He is absent in modern Skyrim mythology.
Shor
(God of the Underworld) Nordic version of Lorkhan, who takes sides with Men after the creation of the world. Foreign gods (i.e., Elven ones) conspire against him and bring about his defeat, dooming him to the underworld. Atmoran myths depict him as a bloodthirsty warrior king who leads the Nords to victory over their Aldmeri oppressors time and again. Before his doom, Shor was the chief of the gods. Sometimes also called Children's God (see Orkey, above).
Ysmir
(Dragon of the North) The Nordic aspect of Talos. He withstood the power of the Greybeards' voices long enough to hear their prophecy. Later, many Nords could not look on him without seeing a dragon.

More of them. I don't care about the God of Mercy, I want the God of Ransom. I want a shrine to Ysmir, not Talos, ect. I want the Nordic versions, not the boring Eight Divines.

Daedra are not evil. They just didn't take part in creating Mundas. None of the gods are really good or evil. The gods simply help those they like and mess with those they dont.

Also, the Mede empire says it is Eight. Talos is banned by the empire.

We have enough fanatics in the real world. I wouldn't mind seeing some of it though in the game. I think it would get annoying if it was too overbearing though.

You're going to hate it when you run across your first Thalmor, I can tell already. :P Not that I like them myself, the bloody elves.

Something along the lines of the Imperial Cult or Temple from Morrowind, sure.
Anything really, like Nord belief factions that we can actually join.
IMO, the game should support classic role play types such as crusaders and clerics.
Druid support would be great also.

I think the only real use for the religious cults are for healing and blessings and stuff. I guess quests too.

It's too bad real world religious cults don't have the healing and blessings and stuff so they're more useful.

OH! NO! I remembered something useful real world cultist gathering places had... When my neighbors tricked my parents into having me spend the night with their kids on Saturday and they took me to some church, we got donuts and cookies and stuff afterwards, so that was pretty cool. And we got to play with G.I. Joe figures between the pews during the time where the dude in the front kept droning on and on.

Love the Star Wars title. :P As for religion, it would be cool if it would play some kind of role in the game. Worship the Divines, the Daedra, Sithis... anything. The religious factions could even be made into some kind of "guilds" where you can make friends, as well as enemies.

Personally I'd love to see the opposite of what happened in the real world's coming nations. Rather than accepting, adapting and eventually being subdued by incoming religion, I'd like to see an aggressive pro-Nordic god stance by the stormcloaks.

While the Mede's have banned the worship of Talos, the vary god who created an empire for them to rule, the Nord's will only allow the open worship of their own pantheon. Stendarr and others be damned.

But I say that as I will be playing a Nord who is fiercely loyal to his own, and mistrusting of outsiders.....

If you love killing mer, Shor would be up your ally. If it's wanton destruction, MD works. If it's for a plan/event, Melphala is for you and has the two assassin guilds as their patron deity. Beothia if you prefer open battle of power. Or you could twist the teachings of Arkay and stick with the idea of killing appeases him, as he is the god of life and death, but you stick with the death side of things...and that dead = dead forever, none of that undead poop.

Do you know what the extent of the Imperialization in Skyrim is? From what I've seen it's only the rebels that follow the old Nordic gods, but I might not have all the information. Do you happen to know?

No clue. I just hope it's not going to be a [censored] repeat of Oblivion with the Nine love fest they seem to receive. We're in Skyrim! The nordic pantheon better be the top pantheon! :flame:

There is a pretty good character concept for Mephala worship (someone elses idea) that I used, but the game mechanics of Morrowind or Oblivion did not support it fully.

I see. I haven't gotten the chance to read the books yet so I've only been able to pick up on what everyone else has been saying. I was wondering if it said anything, even though it was only 40 or so years after OB right? I want to learn more about and see the Nord pantheon on top as well.

A religious cult the performs human sacrifices. They roam the back-roads waiting for weary travelers to convert or recruit into their ranks, however, they will not take no for an answer otherwise you might find yourself on one of their pretty little altars as they cut out your beating heart.

Could be a mini quest line.
