Well if you just want to finish the main quest, I'd recommend just going through as few gates as necessary, unless you want to save all of the cities in Aid for Bruma.

"Aid For Bruma" can actually be ignored entirely, like Velorien said. It's just the Countess of Bruma will complain at you to do it if you try and start the battle for the Great Gate early. It just means there's a greater chance of certain relatively memorable NPCs dying to Daedroth swarms if you don't have a small army of anonymous city-guard meat shields to get in the way. The gates are only actually useful for Sigil stones. If I remember correctly, the only ones you have to do are Kvatch and Bruma's.

I got all the cities too. However, I didn't stick around to fight any wars. I just hung around on top of a nearby hill until the Great Gate opened, then did my magic. Everyone survived. Well... Except the legion of unnamed guards who died as a distraction. :D

And don't forget the loot. There are some nice loot in there and plants.

I up to level 17 and I have not start the main quest yet. Come on 'Fingers of the Mountain' I want you.

Dremora don't like shock.

I've only ever done the main quest once. Usually I just sandbox, hit level 2'x', then start a new character. Notoriously short attention span in that respect. It's just there's not too much for one character to do in Oblivion. Plenty of scope for replays, but once everything have scaled to its max level (grr), the already shoddy sense of progression falls to bits. Ah well. Time to go shed some more level three Goblin blood, methinks. :P

is there any real ending to this game? I get the impression that there isn't. There are just so many quests to follow it's almost infinite in its depth. Do you agree?

Agreed. You don't beat Oblivion, you live it.

I would term completing the MQ and all of the SQ's as beating the game...

I don't do the MQ anymore... I just visit the SI for ingredients... and KOTN will have to wait.... as I'm not worthy yet...

But those of us who run on PC's just add more quests when we get to that point. Or write new ones of our own.

Heh, I suppose finishing or beating the game depends on one's perspective and objectives.

Buffy has it in her little blond head that she is going to clear every dungeon and keep them clear. Well, in 600 hours, she has probably cleared them all more than once. The problem is they just keep filling up with baddies again! :ahhh:

:lmao:

Seriously though, she is just trying to live her live in a beatiful but dangerous land.
