I finished Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel on co-operative mode last night, and as the credits rolled I was forced to ask myself one single question. Why does everybody dislike this game so much?
While I agree that it lacked polish and didn't remain true to the lore of the original Fallout games, it was still an enjoyable action RPG, especially when played on co-operative mode. It also had a few hilarious moments, such as Rhombus the paladin running on ahead of the party and getting himself killed by a single attack from a ghoul. Perhaps that's just my sense of humour though.
I want to make it clear that I have indeed finished the main storyline of Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout 3. But if viewed as a completely separate game, Brotherhood of Steel is a decent co-op adventure in its own right. I just think it gets an unfair amount of criticism due to branching away from the original lore.
Putting the lore issues aside, what reason do people have for disliking Brotherhood of Steel? I'm just curious.
Brotherhood of Steel is a lot like Marvel Ultimate Alliance. If you ignore the storyline and play it with a group of friends, it's fun. If you play by yourself and focus on the plot, the game isn't fun. But, you are correct in stating that most of the hate is directed at the lore, plot, and setting of the game. Taken together, that is a significant chunk of any game.
It never took off on the consoles because it was basically a rehash of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II set in the wasteland. Dark Alliance had a respectable following, but it wasn't huge and Dark Alliance II wasn't anything really new when compared to the original. Not to mention that fans of the Fallout IP were PC gamers. Gamers all over know of the D&D setting, especially that stupid Drow, so BoS lacked the kind of appeal even Dark Alliance had. X-Men Legends came out shortly after BoS and it was overall a better action rpg in every way. Not to mention that Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, KOTOR II, and VtM:B all launched that year. Whether you like action games or RPGs, there was no reason to pick up BoS.
Combine the above and I think the hate is pretty understandable. Here we have a game that neither Fallout fans or console gamers wanted.
