Finishing moves and its features - can't be turned off

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:24 am

Different people have different tastes.

Whether i'm watching a film, or playing a game, i'm not one of these people who gets excited by fancy cinematics, action moves, or big explosions. Maybe when I was 8 I might've liked that kind of thing, but not now.

I'm not trying to insult people who do like finisher moves - i'm just simply stating my opinion. The lack of such cinematics was always something I loved about the Elder Scrolls series; and along with first-person gameplay, it was one of the things that really made the series stand out among the crowd of mainstream action-RPGs. I'm very disappointed that's changed.

Oh no, you take a spin while you do a power attack!

So unrealistic and stylistically cinematic!

Have you looked at the bloody things?
Mortal Combat, Witcher 2, Dragon Age Origins. Yes, those a re pretty cinematic and over the top.
Compared to those, Skyrim is extremely tame. A 2 second animation of your character stabbing another. Oooh, such an action movie cliché...

It's like complaining how the fireball spell now emits smoke for a better effect.

I dont care
Finishing moves are way better than slashing someone's face 30 times

Now that I think about it, it really just depends on how it's implemented. If it takes a finisher to kill a mudcrab, then it was implemented wrong. It'll get annoying if it's used too often. It'll also get annoying if they're all 3rd person. Slow motion should be optional.

With that said, none of us will know until the game actually comes out and when that happens, we may change our minds.

I did it for the sake of doing it, but I didn't expect to have as many selfish people voting it. Ah well, people on these forums stopped surprise anyway a long time ago.

That statement alone made this entire thread a joke. Basically, "I made a poll with options, but didn't actually expect people to disagree with my opinion. So I'll just call them selfish" is what you're saying.

Your logic couldn't possibly fail more.

For most people this is about being in their chosen perspective of view and not being forced instantly. It's annoying, tedious.
Some people want to have the option because finishing moves could very well become very boring and repetetive after ... 300 hours.

"click. click. click. click..."

300 hours later:

"click, click, click, click."

You do understand where I'm going with this right?
You click a button to hack/slash/shoot your bow/spout your magic/shield.
After 30 minutes, all that has been done before. Mostly EVERY game you play
will be filled with a repetitive action. Finishing moves are no different than anything else in the game.

After 300+ hours I would have found not having finishers boring and mundane. Spices up the combat. I think I wouldn't have minded just pure hacking at the enemy if I was like 8, but my tastes have evolved

The problem with Oblivion wasn't that it was just hack, slash, thrust. It's that the hacks, slashes and thrusts weren't rewarding at all. The animation for slashing someone with a sword looked more like you were painting them with a brush. With Skyrim, it seems to me like they're just using finishers to sugar-coat the combat, without fully addressing the problem.

It's been said a thousand times on these forums, but Mount & Blade really is a great example of hack, slash, thrust combat done right in an action-RPG. It's incredibly satisfying without the need for lame cinematics and scripted moves.

@OP:

It's more than we've ever had in oblivion and morrowind put together combat-wise. They don't happen all the time, they don't all happen in 3rd person. There will be many of them, and many for each weapon. It also depends on the weapon, your position and what enemy.....to me that's alot of variation. I remember mentioning the finisher on the wolf, that was swift and did not intefere at all,and you even agreed with that. Eventually you'll just accept it,it will become second nature. In oblivion they just fell to the ground, now we have that, and a [censored] load more ways to kill things.....what's not to like. Bukee is right also,it's like complaining about power attacks. I only play first person, and it does not bother me at all.

I wonder how many of you that don't like it, actually used the deadly reflex mod for oblivion.

Bethesda must be banging their heads with some of the stuff they see on this forum.

I know I saw in an interview that magic does not have these finishers, so my first play through has been decided ... mage. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready for a second play, the modding community will have had time to address the various aspects of the game that could have been handled better.

Doesn't curb my enthusiasm for the game one bit, however. Was going to do a mage game eventually anyway, just didn't know what I'd be doing first. Ultimately, I'm going to be playing one game or another anyway ... if not Skyrim, what? There is nothing on the horizon that even begins to compete with Skyrim, even a Skyrim infected with a bad case of forced third person finishers.

People..actually are complaining about the finishing moves? really?

I'm actually kind of speechless.

My thoughts exactly. This is the first real ADDITION to melee combat since Morrowind, and people don't like it? I mean, we lost polearms in Oblivion, and that's pretty much the only weapon I used in Morrowind. The finishing moves make up for the lack of polearms and then some, imo.

I could tolerate finishers that do not change perspective or slow down time. I am one of those people who never use VATS and turned off finishing moves while playing New Vegas.

lol, no. It was just a joke in general. Not directed at you really. More less, the avid/complaining fans.

Same here, although I won't mind the occasional 3rd person finisher. Just as long as the game doesn't force you into a finisher against the most laughable enemies (mudcrabs, rats...) and doesn't happen every time you kill something.

The M.O. for this forum:

There's a change or feature that some don't prefer to have, or wish it could be toggled on or off. Logical debate insues.

Then, in comes the usual group of mouth-breathers to insult anyone with an opinion other than: OMGZ....I LUV IT!!! BEST THING EVER INVENTED!

For me personally, I don't really have an opinion on this until i play the game. It's something I would have to experience before judging.

There are insults on both sides. The OP actually called those who like the finishers "Selfish." Logical/rational arguments don't last long in these forums.

There will be many of them, and many for each weapon.

Has this been confirmed, or is it just you being optimistic?
