Finishing moves?... I have something better

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:53 pm

I saw that finishing moves were confirmed....although, I'm not shure it will make it in the game, but I might have a better idea if we look at the long term gameplay...

So, my idea is that alternate attack could add more gameplay. The alternate attack would be stronger than normal attacks and have a different animation, but still acts as an regular attack.

For exemple : I the player attacks some ennemy and he is almost dead. The player decides to use his alternate sword attack, and thrusts his sword in the opponent's chest (the area may depend from where you are pointing) killing him... or almost killing him... or getting blocked by the ennemy.

On the side, if he is attacking an ennemy with full health, the player's alternate attack success is greatly lowered.

Now, why i don't really want finishing moves (well, sneak attacks are ok), is because the animation takes some time, so the ennemies around us wont attack us if we finish one of them... there for, making the AI look unfinished...

For magic...the player could "[censored] slap" the ennemy while casting fire ball...
Nah, magic is different, and sadly may not have alternate attacks...

If you have some question, or if something isn't clear, comment on it.

I understand your concerns about finishing moves, I'm not sure how I feel about them yet either because I have yet to see the final product and how smoothly they fit into gameplay. But what you're describing sounds exactly like power attacks from Oblivion.

From what I understand, finishing moves aren't actually necessarily 'finishers'. They are critical hit special animations that more often than not will finish the enemy off. Hence why they're being billed as finishers. However, we know little to nothing about how they're going to be implemented at the moment. Shall we wait for some more information before offering up total alternative systems?

It doesn''t have to be a long animation like crushing the enemys shield, crippling his foot afterwards and then chop him in the head, they simply could be an addition to the normal attack, starting of normally but then penetrating their chest instead, you'd be able to go fast to the next enemy. Besides, in real combat it's always hard to fight against two, when you strike, you are wide open to the enemy: should be add AI realism one step more? Enemies will attack when you are exposed, especially effective when you are fighting 1 vs 2.

haha, yea.

I can complain..., because I barely post topic about gameplay from other games that I would love to see in Skyrim...in fact I never.

I'm more on the "More light sources would be great" and "more weapon types".

And no one can tell me "But modeling candles is lonnnnng"...I'm studying to be a 3D modeler, later... well, I'm about 2 years from studying 3D in University...

I'm somewhat worried as well, I don't want any attacks that are automatic and forced - we should choose when to attempt each attack. If finishing moves are an option we can only expect to succeed on low health ememies that's great.

I know what you mean...jeez. People are already moaning on here about the graphics quality of screenshots which actually look damn hot considering their probably on the 360.

Arghhhh...if it`s not morrowind 2.0, it`s because it`s not got spears or spellmaking or mounted combat or about 1000 other things. I`m amazed Beth even bother to look in the forums!

I want finishing moves, just as long as there is like, 30 different moves for each combat type. I would hate it to gfet old really quickly. And to only be used on the LAST enemy. I don't want to be killed while doing some intricate finishing move.
PS
For magic finishing moves, I'm expecting to see something that looks like it has been pulled straight out of Bayonetta.

I really can't find a way to look at finishers and find them a bad thing. Its beyond me how others seem to find fault with them. Why just kill the enemy with a bland normal slice that you've seen Talos knows how many times now? Wouldn't you rather watch yourself do something cool and different?

Exactly. Otherwise it`s like the godawful boring Oblivion combat as opposed to the vastly improved Oblivion combat using Deadly Reflexes mod for finishing moves..

just ask yourself the question. What will happen when you star a finishing move that usually takes 1 to 2 seconds, when 2 or more ennemies are bashing at you and you are locked in some animation that prevent you from defend yourself ?

2 on the long run....what is your likeliness to suffer from: "Not this animation AGAIN, i want to finish those those idiot quickly, i have better thing to do than see an animation i am already are tired to see" factor.

IMO finishing moves must be a choices, so an alternate attack could lead to a finishing move, but as alternate attacks are optional, its your freedom, your choice, not an imposition.

I couldn t agree more with that part:

But we have no idea how finishing moves are going to be implemented. Just because they're called "finishing moves" doesn't mean they're going to be exactly like every other game that has them.

As others have said, we don't need a solution to something we don't know anything about other than a name and a vague idea of what it might or might not do.
