Seems Bethesda always treis to walk the fine line between a video game and a cRPG. I sure hope it's not theatrical  I didn't like OB's combat because it was too much like a video game, and this is one step closer to video games. Guess I'll need to work on my chamelion...
I doubt it will be theatrical or like vats(please god no)--instead I imagine it as being an attack you fluidly incorporate into the fight when your opponent is near dead. I didnt much like Oblivion weapons combat either, too bland for my taste--basic hack and slash--so Im looking forward to anything they do that can vary up the fights and make them more memorable. I'm sorry but the vertical slash+horizontal slash+power thrust/spin+crouched power jab is a little too simplistic for a game that puts so much effort into creating a rich, deep, vast environment.
From what I've read so far though, it seems that the combat system, especially the swordplay has been re-tooled to give it a more dynamic feel. Dual-wield for countless combinations. Slower pace when walking backwards and stamina sapping sprint will add a new dimension to the fights that oblivion lacked. Weapons have a unique feel when you wield them, which I hope is some kind of physical weight and momentum translated visually to the gamer by the way the character moves when he has it in his hand. And finishing moves, which means more options when in a fight. All good things in my opinion.
