Finishing moves: they are automatic, and sometimes force you

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:36 pm

I'm just worried it will be cool the first 4 times, but 3 hours in, I'll be begging for a switch to take it off.
It's the same reason I turned off the cinematic final slow motion kill in Fallout New Vegas

I'd love to do those epic dragon finishers in first person, forced switching to third person isn't cool because TES is supposed to be from your character's perspective.

And about the finishers getting repetitive - there'll probably be several different finishers for every weapon-enemy type combination.

Exactly. Exactly. They have forgotten what TES was about.

I'll likely use one weapon type the whole game.
And fight dozens of rats.
How many time can I do a finisher on a rat before I get angry?
Guess we'll find out :shakehead:

Let's just hope they put a decent amount of finishers in then. But I don't think you'll perform a finisher for every little rat :P

I imagine I'll get sick of the animation after 2 or 3 rat finishers.

I agree id also love to see finishers in first person on dragons.

Maybe side stepping the dragons head and seeing your characters arm plunge your sword straight down the side of its neck and then use your foot to wrench the sword back out.....something like that.

even if they put 20 different finishers in how long before you get sick of seeing them over and over. the bloody mess perk for fallout 3 is a great example of this. its great the first few times but after youve seen it over and over again it just gets tedious. i originally had picked it because of the damage bonus you get but i got sick of it and didnt use it after that. thankfully it was only a 5% damage bonus so i didnt lose out on much. i want to play a video game if i want to see slo mo action sequence then ill go watch the matrix.

I would prefer the finishing moves to by automatic, and as long as they don't happen too often or are too repetitive, I don't mind them in slow motion or forcing me into third person. If that happens I want the option of turning them off.

Exactly, you won't see as much, but it'll feel so powerful. You twist your weapon, blood gushing out, twist it again etc. BAM BAM BAM, and the whole screen vibrates because of the power of the dragon's desperate twitching. Maybe that was too Ninja Gaiden-ish :D But the other ones where you jump onto the dragon's head and all that would also look awesome in fpp.

Well said.

I really hope someone at Bethesda Game Studios gets a good look at this topic.

I hope so too, but still keep them, just as an option.

It seems more varied and rare to get a finisher, like Dragon Age: Origins.

I just hope they don't put finishers on every single kill. I don't want every kill I make to be overly dramatic or cinematic every time. As mentioned it just becames repetitive and annoying. However, in Todd I trust, so I'm not going to get worried about anything like this until I play the game.

I dislike it, and I hope that it is optional - for the simple reason that almost 10 years ago, in 2002, a game was released which gave the player complete (or at any rate, almost complete) control over melee combat, and thus the kill cam was a toggleable feature which slowed down time and went into a cinematic camera swing around the player and his opponent. You could also toggle how frequently it was (from off to insane, which was every time)

At the end of the day, however, the kill cam was in no way separate from the moves that the player himself could do.

The Skyrim killcam looks like it's going to be a gimmick, and a particularly unimpressive one at that..

Forced third-person? This series started off as a purely first-person series, and now we are being forced to switch to third-person throughout the game's combat?

It's not like you control anything when the finisher plays. You just sit back and enjoy the badass you are. Then you are right back in 1st person.

I personally love these kind of things. Just as I love cutscenes in Bioware games. It's rather cool to see the character you've built up from a cinematic view from time to time.

In 2002, a game gave the player full control over all their actions in melee combat and also gave them the option to choose whether the game would go into a death cam mode, and how frequently that would occur.

A big thank you to Bethesda for being 10 years behind the times.

just out of curiosity what game would that be?

You're over-reacting. Where does it say there's no option to turn off kill-cam?

I loved it in FO3. In fact, if I finished off an enemy outside of VATS I was disappointed with myself. It only kicks in when you take away the enemy's last remaining health, so you are still get the full combat - the only difference being instead of watching a ragdoll slump to the ground, you get a stylish cinematic.

I voted like for all of them, but I'm all about teh options for you guys who want to make the game boring.

Not so bad, they look cool and its not like other animals can hurt you while your doing it, most of them are perks anyway so if you dont want them, dont get the perk.

I predict that finishers will become the visual equivalent of Oblivion dialogue. It won't be quite as easy to joke about, since it won't be as easy as writing "I saw a mudcrab the other day," but it'll be the same thing.
"You know - the one where you lunge forward and drive your sword into your opponent's chest."
"Oooh. Yeah. Saw that one 11 times today."

Looks fine to me as is, adds some extra spice to the combat. Reminds me of the kill moves in DA:O which were great.

I'm somewhat indifferent about finishing moves. I didn't mind the 1st person one we saw in the video.

But forced slow-motion and forced 3rd person I would really dislike. When I watched the demo, I thought the finishing moves on the wolf (slow motion + 3rd person) and the dragon (3rd person) had just been staged for the purposes of the presentation. Or perhaps that was just wishful thinking, because I really disliked them.

So, optional finishing moves please.

I voted I dislike everything, and would like it all optional. My first playthrough, or maybe few hours, I won't mind the finishers so much. It will start to annoy me after a while when I'm just trying to get somewhere or do something, and then a finisher starts. If it's quick and over, cool. If it's cinematic, takes 5 seconds, extra slow mo third person yadda yadda, then I'll be like "come on already!!!". I just find things like this annoying, when I want to move but find myself with zero control watching mini movies every 10 fights or however often. Give me the option to disable them completely, and I gladly will.

I always looked at Skyrim as being a game that would fall between Morrowind and Oblivion, but with most every piece of information I learn about Skyrim the game slowly falls down and is likely to cross over and fall beneath Oblivion.

Really I′ve been optimistic about the game but if all of this is true then that creates a huge dent in the quality of Skyrim.

I do hope that you are wrong and that I will not be forced into third person or slow motion, I wouldn′t mind finishing moves, especially if I had to trigger them and could choose to ignore them, but I could live with them being automatic just not in 3rd person or slow motion.
