If you haven't finished the FONV Main Quest...
SPOILER ALERT
So, I just finished the Battle of Hoover Dam for the very first time, and I have to say... I'm so confused!
Spoiler
You see, I was told once that when the battle at Hoover Dam was over, that was the end of the game... done, finished, all over but the crying, and I thought he meant like Ghost Recon. You do the last mission and the credits roll, and there is no option to reload a save. Imagine my surprise when after the battle, the little synopsis of what happens to who gets finished, and... my character is suddenly standing in the casino area of the Lucky 38! Along with Ed-E and the unknown securitron who had tagged along with me through the entire battle.
this is not a reload of a previous save. I can say that with a great deal of certainty. You see, I never took Ed-E to the dam with me, I'd left him upstairs in the Presidential suite. In fact, it had been a couple of weeks since Ed-E went anywhere with me, so I knew there was no save that would put Ed-E and my character in the casino.
...and then there was the matter of this securitron. When I clicked on him, he informed me that he would protect me, and there were no options to make him wait, or go away, or even fix breakfast, so I let him tag along (as if I had a choice, eh?). After a night's sleep, I decided to have a look at the world and see if anything at all had changed, so I left the strip. No sooner had I arrived in Freeside, than the securitrons who play border guard started yelling about unauthorized entrance, and promptly blew my pet securitron to hell... I was a bit upset, but it did solve the problem of what to with this thing following me all over the wasteland...
I supposed it's obvious that I supported House during the battle. Not that I wanted to... I'd chosen a route where I got right down to the point of House sending me to the dam, when I created a new save, then went up and killed the [censored]. Unfortunately Yes Man didn't give me any options to do anything at the dam, and the control room computers would not activate, and I was left with no way to finish the game in any real sense. So, I reloaded and let House send me to the Dam. Now I wonder if I had let him send me, could I have killed him then, and gotten the battle when I got to the dam?

I've still never finished the MQ supporting the NCR or the Legion, so I have no idea how it goes under those circumstances.
