Fire, Frost, and Lightning. Which will you use?

Haha, I have to admire a post so outright pyromanical. I salute you. And I'll most likely be firebender-inclined when Skyrim comes out as well, heh.

I agree about it sounding more exciting in Skyrim - setting the scenary on fire, for one thing. But even more so, the ability for more control over what kind of effect you want - tap to launch a condensed ball of fire, or hold to spray fire like a flamethrower.

Fire is a beautiful and wonderfully destructive element, it's just plain awesome! But really, it's gonna be cold in Skyrim, and if I wasn't so...inclined to use Fire, I'd still probably choose it to keep warm. I'm hoping it will melt nearby snow as well as burn flammable objects. Really, Fire seems to outshine the other elements in my opinion at this point, but I hope the other elements impact the environment as well. One thing that was hinted at was the combination of dual wielded spells in Skyrim. I think it would be awesome if holding both triggers while you have, say, Fireball dual wielded you would cast a even bigger Fireball or cause Fireballs/Meteors/Dragons-who-don't-understand-what-is-going-on to rain down around you, and similarly, Frost should cause a Blizzard and Shock should cause a Thunderstorm. It could be around you, or possibly shot as a projectile, detonating on impact.

I am also excited about Fire spells in general, I loved tossing Fire spells over Cyrodiil from the mountains, watching it fly, hoping it would hit something, or somebody. The possibility of even a small form of Fire propagation is amazing, and dragon attacks seem even more epic and awesome.

....Or were you excited about magic spells in general? Because I also think it's going to be awesome! :whistling: :flamethrower: :chaos:

I'll use whichever is the enemy's weakness. But generally I usually use lightning.

I hope there's another elemental or at least another offensive spell type. I just dunno what =/ berhaps just a beam of pure magika, like hyper beam in *sigh* Pokemon?

I would think it would be smarter to use frost magic in Skyrim. Think about it, a mage who primarily uses frost would be accustomed to the cold. Possibly to the point where he enjoys it or it doesn't afflict him.

I've personally always been a fan of frost magic in fantasy settings so I'm leaning towards that. Though, fire sounds the most interesting in Skyrim. So, probably a mix of both.

I really hope torches have the same effects as fire based magic. I,e dropping a torch in a pool of oil would set it ablaze.

Pff getting accustomed to the enviroment is for brutes, I′m a pancy scholar! I cutomize the enviroment to my needs!

*Blasts fire around himself creating a small hole*
*Fills the hole with snow by using telekenisis*
*Heats up the snow with his fire and enjoys his hot tub*

Mainly frost I think, and probably in trap form. The slow should be great for a bow focused character against melee enemies.

Yeah shock does seem rather lacking compared to the other two, maybe it could amplify the next shock spell cast on the enemy? So the mor eyou hit someone with multiple shocks the more damage you will do, to their health and magicka.

The effect of shock damage should be maybe paralysis and a massive amount of health lost. Seriously, do people realise how dangerous electrical currents are, even if they're relatively small?

There is nothing i like better than to see my enemies BURN :flamethrower:

Edit: maybe that will change if frost magic is done nicely in Skyrim.

Fire and lightning of course!
I've always thought frost a bit lame in Oblivion, fire and lightning are so much more spectacular :D
And it fits with her personality. On one hand she likes to be a bit of a show-off with fire spells, but she when things get serious, the lightning will be blasted.

Where is the non-elemental Damage Health spell option? It is what I used in Oblivion because I did not have to think about enemy resists when casting it.

has everyone forgotten that nords have resistance to frost dmg?

im assuming the majority of the npc enemies will be nords, so having only frost would be a bad decision imo.

im going with conjuration and enchant, and adding all elements to my weapons. i won't use any destruction magic spells, unless they are ridiculously fun.

Gotta throw 'em frost spells first just for the slowing effect, then apply overtime damage from fire spells. Rinse and repeat, with occasional usage of lightning spells at the earlier part of encounter against magicka-reliant enemies to burn their magicka out. But when I'm particularly bored I'll just throw them damage health on target spells like no tomorrow.

Maybe it's because I'm weird, but I usually don't pick spells for "flashy effects" or because they look cool. I'm more concerned about survival in a video game, so I use spells for practical reasons, even if they are not "flashy". I use a lot of healing and buffs/de-buffs in video games with only a couple of damaging/defensive spells (usually fire or frost). (I like playing healers, so I try to get healing and shielding powers whenever I could).

Since these spell have different purposes, I will use all three depending on the situation. All of them seem to be really useful. Slowing down enemies before they get to you is great for me, since I usually attack from a distance (with bows and arrows or guns if it's modern setting) and try to avoid close combat whenever I can. Absorbing mana can be very useful when playing against other mages, especially ones with lethal effect spells. And, of course, fire spells are useful to damage things (when does a fire spell NOT damage things, lol).

I won't decide until seeing them all in action, but in most games I usually like ice/water or lightning. I'll go for cool looking effects over practicality most of the time.

True. That might make it less effective for overall damage. Maybe that's why they gave it slowing, which seems like it'd be the most useful bonus effect to me. Although since they called the frost spell "ice spike" in one of the screenshots, you'd think the frost itself wouldn't be doing most of the damage.

Something about using fire in the ice-covered world of Skyrim seems very satisfying to me. Warm the place up a bit.

Assuming frost is effective, frost and fire. If not fire and lightning. I'll always load into all elements but those two would be the main ones.

That's also assuming frost has other effects than just 'hurt'. I'd love to see frost slow them a little, fire and lightning maybe having after effects (fire prolonged damage, lightning chance to stun) at basic all the way to master.

I disliked the fact all the spells were basically 'do damage' or 'do splash damage', variety is the spice of life and magic should, to my mind, be all about quickly cycling through spells, using them with eachother tactically and so on. Not expecting a beautiful spell dynamic where every spell has a use and they all combine and can be changed as fast as thought but I would like to see something more than just...damage...

I really like what they are doing with the type of spells, it really give some diversity on what to use. The one thing I really hated about Oblivion was that the effects of all the destruction spells was that they all did pretty much the same thing(just looked a little different), didn't really give much incentive to spend money a on ice spell that had the same effect that a fire spell you already possessed .

Regarding the other elements impacting the environment, I would love to see frost/ice spells freeze stuff they hit, much like Fire sets the landscape aflame. Lightning can't really have much of a lasting effect like that other than having a small smoking crater where it hits, haha.

As for Duel-wielding Fire, thats what I plan to do (I'll have duel longswords on a hotkey tho, for when I run oom), and I'm really hoping for Duel-Fire to blast everything in front of you with a hellish blaze of inferno lol. Alternatively, using both hands could focus the destruction into a tight, immensely powerful and precise lance of fire.

Magic spells in general sound exciting as well, we just haven't had much info at all about them as you know, other than that there will be 85 effects. I'm really hoping for Telekinesis to have a Force Push application now, and hopefully Levitation is back in. I'm a big fan of Necromancy, hopefully there'll be more darker spells along that line of business haha, reanimate, zombify disease, and such.
