Fire / Npc reaction

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:57 am

Since dragons can attack with fire, one thought I had was "can fire actually interact with the environment?" I don't mean like buildings burning down, as cool as that would be. But rather say trees setting ablaze or perhaps even npc's catching on fire? I'd like to see some reaction from npc's when faced with dragons. I.E, some stand to fight, others run away, grab their children, etc.

Yes, it does. It was confirmed a while ago, though I can't remember exactly where

Its been confirmed repetitively, actually. Its in almost every article when they talk about either magic or improvements on Havok.

I doubt houses will burn down, but there will definitely be some fire animations. I pretty much doubt grass and stuff like that will become scorched. I think "catching fire" means a fire animation on things. Although in the trailer the floor seemed burned....I'll be surprised if that is so (although the effect will surely wear off after a while.)

Don't expect destruction. It will probably be some residual flame that sets alight npcs but that's it. This kind of thing gets hyped by fans way too easily.

Yea, other than a brief animation (with DoT for enemies) nothing will "burn down" or have fire spread farther than if you just shot flames on non-flammable surface.

But I would really hope NPCs react to it. It's so annoying to hit someone with a fireball and for them to act like it happens all the time. I want them to stop mid charge, scream in pain, and flail their arms wildly. This also gives mages a chance to flee, instead of fighting to the death like a warrior.

I'd like to see AI reacting to the aight of fire even, running away from burning areas and hiding near non flammable materials when fire threatens, especially if you were the one to fling the fireball at them.

About destruction of property... I wouldn't mind it if they rebuilt it in like, 3 days in game or so, but otherwise no. And anyways, there will be mods for such things.

In the trailer, in the river town settlement with the PC walking down the street, the Rooves are thatch - they should be really flamable.

I also reckon they'll have a "burn shader" sort of thing similar to their snow shader.

In the GI article, http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx?PostPageIndex=2 they mention this sweet little detail:

The Havok Behavior technology gives the spells more visual flair than we've seen in past Elder Scrolls games as well. If you cast a frost spell, you'll see the effects on the enemy's skin. If you're wielding the flame spell like a flame thrower, the environment will catch fire for a short while and burn anything that comes into contact with it.

I not sure if residual flames from your Fireball spell will visually ignite enemies or just deal invisible Fire damage to your target. However, I had the same question in mind in regards to Fire's interaction with the environment upon finishing watching the Skyrim teaser. Personally, if we are fighting Dragons, the fights have to feel truly epic. Dragons should visually devastate the rooves of the homes upon landing. Every killing swipe on those poor NPCs should cause their bodies to react appriopriately. Their Fiery breath should ignite flammable objects.

Of course, it wouldn't be fair if we got something resembling fire propagation in the sole regards to Dragons. After reading the "Building Better Combat" article, the environment will burn, but I doubt destructible environments will be in so there goes the actual burning decay of buildings and trees(but perhaps it would place burn marks on the buildings/trees?). In regards to NPC interactions with Fire, this is what I'm hoping for:

  • NPCs react to Fire. It's the most visually stunning element, causing awe and fear all at once. Intelligent NPCs should stray from flames.
  • Fire finishers. If an NPC dies to Fire damage, they should erupt in flames and scream madly, until falling to the ground as a burning heap. It should be caused by all sources, player, dragon, or "accidental torch misplacement". (Although all destructive spells should have a finisher, but that's another topic for another time.)
  • NPC models change into a "burnt" model after death from this Fire finisher.
  • NPCs should use the environment to their advantage as well. If they notice some oil, they will try to light it with Fire spells or blazing arrows from afar if your nearby the source of oil.
  • Fire Enchantments should also ignite flammable objects and environments, and also should provide possible Fire finishers, as well as physical ones.

I watch and listen, hoping for definitive answers on how far they will take Fire in this game, although I'm hoping for Fire propagation. Hopefully NPCs will give us an indication of how they fear situations involving dragons and burning crops. :flamethrower::flame:

I know fire from spells and dragons can set things on fire.
I wonder if you drop lit torches, the ground sets fire. I wonder if all fire lighting can be knocked over and set things on fire.

The effects will be as in the trailer, as in the ground will catch fire, the snow will melt away and grass will catch. The effect wears away after a period, or leaving and returning no doubt.

Any chance we could get far cry 2-ish fire?
maybe not as pronounced but if adapted well to tes, it could be awesome...

And as that was possible 3 years before skyrim, it shouldn't be technically impossible...
