Fire spells as torches

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:01 am

During the Skyrim gameplay trailer there is a shot of a pc wielding a shortsword in his right hand a fire spell in his left hand. What I got from this is that you are basically "holding" the fire spell in your hand and than casting it at will. But does the fire spell emit light? Since you are practically carrying around a flame in the palm of your hand, can it serve the purpose of a torch? I think this is a good idea because not only does it make the spell much more useful, but it also makes up for the lack of a free hand to carry an actual torch. Thoughts?

Not sure. However, we know we can set the ground on fire. Whether or not light is emitted from objects or the ground set on fire, we can't really say yet. I would assume that it would because Bethesda are svckers for detail.

It seems likely because torches would probably be more difficult to use with the new method of wielding items.

It would certainly make sense of the fire emits light, however, even so, that doesn't necessarily mean it would be a replacement for a torch, as the light may be much dimmer than a torch and its radius smaller, after all, if the light spell is still in the game, which I'd assume it is given that there's not really any reason to remove it, I'd think Bethesda would not want fire spells to basically make it obsolete, if you want a magic light, casting that spell would probably be the better choice.

That would be pretty cool. I approve.

Could also make stealth a little harder for a magic user if their spell was giving off light - could be interesting but some might find it frustrating.

Seems to make sense, I wonder if they will bring the Light spell back.

Or better yet, allow you to cast the light spell at a wall or the floor and have it stick and still be a light source. It would be nice.

Yeah that would be pretty sweet. I just hope they change the light from green to some other color. A whitish blue would be quite fitting I think.

We know spells can emit light in caves (we have seen in the official trailer and Todd showed this using a fire ball to light up the dungeon). I don't know about holding them to be a personal torch, but they will definitely emit light if you use them.

one of the new articles mentioned todd picking up a staff of light, which fires the light spell on target.

Didn't the pc cast a light spell with a staff in the trailer?

Towards the end of the trailer when the pc is dual wielding a sword and staff in a cave. Looks like a light spell, but it might not be.

I watched the trailer again (and then my damn wifi went out) and I saw the staff you meant. The spell it launched certainly gave out a light. Is it the Light spell? I couldn't tell. I hope it is as it has that lovely blueish white color I mentioned above!

Well in Oblivion spells emit light and sounds so they can be detected if some one trying cast spell from sneak, but from other side we can highlight places with well placed fireball.

No reason why it would be a bad thing.

The staff that emitted a light ball was actually a unique staff item (Looted in the demo), Can't remember the name exactly, it was something like Lightbound staff I think.

That's a nice idea, maybe it could simply provide less light than a torch, so that those still have a use

In oblivion I often used a fireball spell to light areas breifly. Problem is any enemys instantly know where you are once you cast it. So you cast it, you can breifly see what monsters are in the area, and they now know where you are, then you see a huge ogre running at you, then the lights go out again. uh oh.
