Firearms in Skyrim

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 4:28 am

Ok before you hardcoe fans freak out, I'm not talking about having something like a G36 or AK-47. I think an old kind of Flintlock long barrel rifle and or pistol wouldn't seem so out of place in TES. You would only have one shot so it would be only useful for either hunting or saving your life as a last resort if some powerful enemy was about to kill you.
Plus the reload animation could be realistic were you would have to have it go through all the steps of what it takes to reload a real flintlock weapon. And ammo would be limited, like you could only carry 10 or so bullets at a time.

It could make for some cool bonus missions and dlc as well. Lets say you had to find the materials for the weapon first then you would have to have a blacksmith make it for you and the same steps for getting ammo too. Also like a real flintock it would be useless in the rain or under water, and it could have random misfires at any given time. And they would degrade with each fire loosing a little bit of power and accuracy after each successive shot, until after about 10 shots it would break beyond repair. The only way to get another one would to be to find the materials again and pay to have one made again. I'm sure many of you think this is blasphemy but I would love to use a weapon like this in the TES world.

You can shoot fireballs and lightning from your hands... Why would you need guns? They seem kind of second rate compared to the most basic destruction magic.

did you see what happened in fable. IMHO a good fantasy game should stay as close to the dark ages as possible when it come to technology

...yet people still want crossbows. The irony.

Anywho, staves are TES's guns. And infact, they're much more overpowered than a gun could ever hope to be.

Fable didn't svck because of guns. Stop hating Fable just to hate it. Furthermore, "fantasy" doesn't mean it has to be a medieval world. Star Wars is technically fantasy.

ehh guns ruined the ranged aspect of that game series for me and star wars is more scifi to me. lol and TES is a medieval fantasy game dude so my argument works it rly wouldn't fit.

Make a mod that incorporates Fallout stuff into the game. People from another time invade and the people of Tamriel must unite to stop this invading force. Make some sort of indigenous people-theme out of it.

Wow, then we don't need bows ether?
Hmmm... maybe we should remove also all the melee weapons too!
I mean, why would I take a sword and charge at someone while I can simply burn him to crisp with snap of my fingers, derp.

Guns seem to fit Fable pretty good if you ask me.
Of course, I'm not talking about their balance here.

OT:
Honestly, I don't know.
In one hand, it is only logical that some primitive guns are introduced into TES at some point (they already have cannons in Hammerfell).
In other hand, they simply don't feel right.
I know that someone can bring a ton of good an logical reasons for them to be in TES, but they simply don't seem right and totally out of place.
It's like making an ice cream from onions; maybe someone has a very good reason to make one, but whole feeling of onion ice cream simply feels wrong.

In case guns are introduced to TES, I think that it should be via Easter egg and that's that (only one and well hidden gun in whole game - dwemer origin).
To solve ammo problems, they could make a NPC which will be some looney dude/dudette who is obsessed with making metal marbles and selling them.
Those metal marbles will somehow be just perfect for ammo of your gun. :P

Go play Fallout : NV. It's got alot of guns and it's similar to TES's style.

I prefer a world of magic, swords and bows, sure if the elder scrolls was the real world it would have flintlocks eventually but that's what makes The Elder Scrolls so different, so awesome and the game it is today with the world staying in a kind of locked timeline.

Wow this thread again?

My answer remains the same NO.

A ton of games have guns now adays, if you want to use any type of gun, go play those games. Leave TES Sword and Sorcery alone.

Well the Redguards already have cannons. Just a matter of time before flintlocks are added in. Just be like me, and brace yourself for the inevitable.
That way you won't care as much.

Star Wars is NOT fantasy, it's Sci-fi. It is not at all the same. Also, they are not hating fable just to hate it...there are just aspects of the game some people don't like.

On topic...I agree with those who say black-powder weapons would be quite silly to use in a world of magic. If a mage throws a fireball at your rifle, it would blow up.

I know some people would say "It's fantasy, it doesn't have to be realistic!". Well...it still has to fit into the world, and black-powder weapons doesn't fit into Tamriel at all.

So...nope...bad idea. Sorry...very nice pictures though!

I actually think that'd be a good idea. it'd be cool for characters who don't use magic. like a pirate. pirates are still middle age-ish so i think it'd fit in perfectly fine.

I'd rather not turn this into World of Warcraft. Sure, Blunderbuss's are fun at first, but then the developer starts taking it too far with machine guns, turrets, then motorbikes and helicopters and pretty soon its not a fantasy game at all anymore, it becomes a steamy pile of all timelines mashed together in one degenerate theme, lets not open a gateway to creating silly items, say no to guns.

No, no no no no no. -If- they were included, they'd better be of Dwemer make and there better be only one of them in existence. Other than that, a thousand times no.

Why develop guns when all of the thinking minds prefer magic?

Yeah good question why would you?

In all seriousness bows and swords fit the fantasy setting a lot more than guns.
Shooting a rifle at a dragon just seems wrong... And even so I feel like the way they're leaning towards more visceral, realistic combat, flinklocks would end up being as impractical as they are for one on one combat in a real life. (Ever wonder why they got 200 guys in a line?)

Why should they be Dwemer made? Like I said on the first page. The redguards already have Cannons. It would make sense that they would eventually make guns. Plus I can see a redguard favoring a gun, due to their irrational hatred towards magic.

Though even if they did add guns I would still use magic instead.
