Firefox 4

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:01 am

It doesn't show when there's no ongoing or finished downloads. Once all downloads are finished there's a button to clear and hide the bar. You can double-click on a finished download in the bar to open/execute the downloaded file and that also clears it from the bar.

Seems to be working now. Too bad it won't autohide the button in minimode. I am going to have to play with the settings so I can read the progress information as it is too small and crammed by default.

I gave it a spin but Chrome still feels faster and looks better IMO.

I was with Firfox 3 before and uninstalled it because I started getting problems with it freezing from videos. I installed Firefox 4 and now get the same problem. It used to not do that for me before with Firefox 3 but I don't know what's causing it. I installed some addons but I don't think that changes the way it runs video.

Do what iGuess said to help diagnose the problem (if safe mode/a clean profile clears it up, try disabling addons in your usual profile until it stops happening). For Youtube, though, you may find http://www.youtube.com/html5 to the HTML5 trial helps, since that'll mean a lot (not all, yet) of videos use HTML embedded video (like images) instead of Flash. In fact, I recommend anyone who hasn't already done so to do it immediately; it takes only a second, has no impact on your watching of stuff, but is waaay less CPU intensive (because you're not using that piece of crud known as Adobe Flash <_<).

Didn't like it. Can't see any improvements, layout is pretty meh, and the new tabs look hella ugly. Sticking with Rockmelt, much better IMO.

Firefox 4 doesn't seem to be very good at handling more than 50 or so tabs, an amount I regularly have open. It's crashed at least half a dozen times yesterday, and it's not like it froze and I had to close it, it'll just close itself out of nowhere. The later versions of Firefox 3 on the other hand could handle twice that amount and stay open for days. I'm trying to be more conscious of how many tabs I have open but if it continues being so crash-happy I'll probably go back to Firefox 3.

Odd. Are you sure it's not an add-on getting feisty on you, rather than a problem with FF itself? I've got 70 tabs open at the moment (...yeah, I know), and no stability problems whatsoever. Then again, I've also got 8GB of RAM, so FF's not likely to go into a RAM-shortage coma and crash due to that anytime soon.

In other news, I've finally gotten Firefox 4 to look much less like it's been beaten repeatedly with the ugly stick, so I'm happier with it. :)

I tried switching to the html trial but it's not fixed.

Start firefox in safe mode (or create a new firefox profile) and see if you still have the problem. Addons could certainly cause problems.

I see different versions of the same for some. Like four different versions of Java Console. I'm disabling them all except for the latest version. I didn't try safe mode yet or anything with the profile.

It's extremely fast and easy. Firefox has a "safe mode" that just disables everything that can cause problems. It will take 10 seconds to start FF in safe mode and watch a video and see if it happens.

Not all videos have been converted yet. Does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGZeqwdWoeo work? If it does, your problems may be related to Flash.

I still recommend doing as iGuess says, and trying Firefox's safe mode. I believe it should be listed in the start menu (I don't use windows). That is the best way to start diagnosing the problem.

It does work, but it's not only the videos that get it to freeze. Pop-ups do it sometimes too, and when they have audio, but idk if it's just when they have audio. I got Firefox running in safe mode now, and so far hasn't crashed. The only glitch I notice is the navigation bar at the bottom of these forums doesn't let me return to the page I was just at. (not much of a problem)

It also doesn't seem well optimized right now, with the speed it's scrolling.

Just updated to 4.0 myself. Seems a lot less cluttered is my first impression.

I just had another crash, and in safe mode. The only thing I can think of is when I changed something with the settings (that you don't normally mess with) that's supposed to improve its browsing speed, but I don't think that's supposed to be kept the same way since I uninstalled it and reinstalled the new version of Firefox. I'm also seeing 2, 3, or 4 of the vertical lines for where I'm typing, whenever I type something or move it with the arrow keys. I guess I should try a new profile.

Doesn't seem to be an add-on, like I said it'll happen at random times, even when I'm not at the computer or when I'm using another program. I have 4 GB of RAM but thanks to 32-bit XP and background programs I only have about 2.3 available when I start my computer, but I never let my available RAM dip to dangerously low levels. Luckily it hasn't crashed again since I made that post, likely due to the fact that I'm now trying to keep the number of tabs open under 50, but I'm still considering switching back if it starts crashing again.

Any 32-bit program on XP is limited to a max of 2 GB memory anyway, so running out of memory is doubtfully a problem. If I were to guess, I'd put my money on adobe flash and Firefox's new sandboxing causing the crashes. Flash is [censored].

Still, though, I don't see how you can maintain any level of control on 50 tabs. You can't even see them all at once much less actually use them all at the same time in any active manner. The worst my browsing ever gets is when on an image board. I'll have maybe 30 tabs open. Then I go, save all the pictures in the open tabs, close them, and revert to my usual 4 open tabs.

The problem with things not working? Yeah, the relationship with my ex didn't work. Haha, anyway, what exactly did you mean by "it didn't work"?

When I try to open it up, it just doesn't work. No error or anything. It just doesn't work in any ways.

The only annoying this about FF4, they switched the "Open in New Tab" and "Open in New Window" positions on the right click menu. I instinctively go to the New window now, instead of New Tab, which screws everything up. :bonk:

You know you can middle-click to open a link in a new tab?

I don't understand this. At least 95% of the people who have been using Firefox for years have no idea of this feature and it was there since Firefox 2 (I think). What sort of stupid program design would that be where if you wanted to open a link in a new tab (which people frequently do) you'd have to right-click on the link and in the menu find and click on the option that says "open link in new tab"?!

And even so, weren't you at least a tiny bit curious about what happens when you middle-click on a link?

I'm pretty sure ctrl-click also works in Firefox (for when using a touchpad) and ctrl-shift-click (opens in background tab)
