Firefox 4

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:55 am

Heh, reading through all the Firefox linked news from various sites, I see Google has responded with a new beta of Chrome http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-03/23/firefox-4-launched -

Google has responded to the launch by releasing a beta of Chrome 11. Alongside a minimalist new logo, this updated version of Chrome 11 uses HTML 5 and voice recognition technology to provide a universal API that will let you control sites with your voice.

It won't be much longer before I can ban you all just by talking into the mike.

"...voice recognition technology to provide a universal API that will let you control sites with your voice"? Bleh. Ever since Microsoft's fascination with the idea everyone has been trying to implement it and everyone keeps failing. I don't see myself talking instead of clicking unless it's done really really well and I don't see that happening in this decade. I wouldn't be surprised if you accidentally ended up banning yourself, Ro. :P

And it works really well, too (Chromium 11.0.696.16 here). But then again, so does the Android voice-to-text system, and I imagine it's the same backend.

[edit] Haven't tested controlling the browser using speech, just speech-to-text.

Try backing up your bookmarks, deleting C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\Mozilla then installing Firefox 4 (and restoring your bookmarks from the backup).

I have been using version 4 since the final beta and both RC versions and quite like it. It took somegetting use to having the NoScript button up top near the address bar and lack of a status bar showing my download percentages but otherwise it seems functionally the same. My bookmarks menu seems a bit weird now though since Unsorted Bookmarks are at the bottom randomly, but overall I prefer the new look, then again it looks like the latest few versions of Opera so it wasn't a huge change.

Wonderful.

Click the toolbar, choose "Customize" and move it to where you want it to be.

There are people who use Firefox as their browser who were still using 3.6 for the last 6 months? I'm amazed.

Why is that?

Because the 4.0 beta has been stable for nearly everyone (with scattered problems), while being significantly faster than 3.6, and lacking memory leaks, and with almost all the important addons working with forced compatibility for a very long time.

By far the majority of browser users do not follow the experimental, beta and RC releases - they wait for a public release, this can be seen from the number downloading Fx4. I have Fx 4 but am still using Minefield as my default, I guess I just like playing with it. :) As I said, beta users are way the minority.

Right, but it's been in beta for what, 9 months? 3.6 was awful and bloated. I'm just surprised that people had actually stuck with it, rather than the FF4 beta, or switched to Chrome. By the fourth or fifth beta version, it felt enough like a stable release to be someone's only browser.

It wasn't like "we're working on this crazy unstable version of firefox 4 that is scary and only for power users!", it was like "here's the only good version of Firefox, that we are taking our sweet, sweet time with getting to perfect stable release status!".

If they aren't officially compatible, you can install https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ and disable compatibility checking. It will just make it so that if an addon claims it's only compatible with 3.6, you can still install it in 4 and see if it works, though by now most addons have been officially updated to work. Also, a lot of addons have a nightly build that is compatible with FF4, even if the version on the Firefox addons page isn't.

Maybe I like the way FF 3.6 looks? Faster than less than a second loading pages isn't really all that cool to me and I've had no problems with memory leaks.

Ohh, I like this , without the Menu bar, and Darkfox persona, it looks nice. :]

EDIT: tesfanner http://img197.imageshack.us/i/74299522.jpg/

Dammit, something's wrong with mine. I can't hide the menu without the address bar disappearing too. And the icons (back, refresh, home) are on the left like they were before. Nothing changed for me except for the tabs. =/

EDIT: Fixed it!

EDIT2: I wish there was a way were the pinned tabs wouldn't close if I middle clicked them. I just want them to return back to the original page when I middle click it. Middle click usually closes a tab, but these are pinned tabs, having that function would be better IMO.

Not sure if it is out for FF 4 at the moment, but the extension "Tab mix plus" has options to change options like this.

I use the "Easy App Tabs" extension - double clicking a tab either makes it in to an app tab, or returns it to normal.

My biggest problem with the beta was an incompatibility with Windows Blinds, but that problem appears to have been quashed. It appears that I will be sticking with Firefox 4...and the customization is really cool too.

I switched to the beta at one point, but the YouTube Enhancer user script wasn't compatible.

And it might be a stretch to call it significantly faster than 3.6; perhaps in benchmarks, but I've noticed only a minimal performance increase in actual use.

Thank you.

However I can't find an option for reverting a tab back to the webpage I set first. For example, I would like to set the community discussion as an apptab, and then go onto any other section of the forum. However, with a click of the mouse, I'd like to be able to refresh the tab back to community discussion. This would be particularly useful for the 4-5 forums I frequent, setting the most frequent section of the forum I visit as an apptab. However this option is not available AFAIK, so I'll just create a folder with the tabs, and always open that up instead.
