My first blood dragon!

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 6:37 pm

Headed to some random cave for some random bandits for another random bounty, the sky was darkened by the shape of a dragon. Dragon encounters had become so easy (level 25 destruction mage) that I didn't even dive into my satchels for cold resistance potions when I saw the breath.

I looked up into the sky to view my foe, and recognized it (HUD indicated) as a blood dragon! I have heard stories (read on these forums) about the ferocity and viciousness of these beasts. I did drink of my cold potion then, as I prepared for battle.

Vorstag, as brave a companion as one could wish, had already engaged the beast. His natural Nord resilience to cold, combined with the shield I enchanted for him, protected him well from the dragon's icy breath. He stood toe to toe with it, trading blows, teeth and claw versus steel.

I came around the side of the giant beast, and threw volley after volley of fire into its flank. Throughout, however, the dragon continued to focus his attention on Vorstag, who held his ground strong. Shortly after it began, the fight was over, and the dragon was dead.

I rushed over to heal my companion, but he was mostly unscathed, and I was completely unharmed.

"So much for the ferocious Blood Dragons!" I said. We laughed, and Vorstag caught his breath while I looted the corpse of valuable bones and scales.

What difficulty are you playing on? Anything short of Master is a breeze , while on master it's incredibly hard and with a strictly melee character(especially thief-assassin, this is speaking from experience as a lvl 40 something assassin) it's even harder.
Btw, blood dragons aren't the hardest, ancient dragons are even harder, my first one was at around 37 or something.

I faced one at around level 17 and had to run away. I tried beating it 3 times, but realized it wasn't going to happen. You had the right tools to defeat it, especially with the cold resist.

Wasn't it Elder Dragons? In any case, my first elder was inside Solitude. Took me and 15 other guards a good 15 seconds of whacking to bring him down (he landed very stupidly in the middle of the guard training area).

I took one on my own later, with my laser and dragonflesh+ebonyflesh on, it didn't stand a chance. Was on adept though.

If the script for the dragons is at least how i think it is, i think that as soon as the creation kit comes out and I have time, i'll try to make the A.I smarter, unless someone beats me to it.

Try fighting a Frost Dragon and an Elder Dragon, my companion/wife didn't even get a chance to fire an arrow at one of them, she went down on her knees in seconds, luckily she can't be killed.

Yeah. I meant elder. I haven't met an ancient so far, but there's time still. I was thinking about that special gear you get in that special questline for that special faction which I will not spoil for you.

Geez, mines on the default difficulty and I find that unless I keep my distance I always get one-shot bite killed by blood dragons. Oh well I'm squishy and I haven't stacked the deck in my favour (enchants, defences etc). So I'm fairly killable by just about anyone.

Only fought a few of these, but I found them fairly easy. Firing some arrows at it with one other Khajiit south of Solitude was plenty to kill him within 30 seconds. I'm curious about the Elder/Ancient dragons, considering I haven't faced those yet.

All my fights against elder dragons have been easier than against frost dragons. Do they use different fighting tactics like land more or something?

Blood dragons are the easiest.
Then you have frost dragons.
Then Elder dragons
Then Ancient dragons.

Frost Dragons and above on Adept is very hard. On Expert and Master you will be 1 shotted unless you have 600 hp or a ton of resists.
And if you use resists, you are probably enchanted. And if you are relying on heavily enchanted gear. Well, then the game balance is broken and your voice in saying Dragons on master is hard does not count.
Cause dragons on Master is close to impossible without enchants. or a ton of potions.

It will be harder:-)

It's good to have anti fire and ice enchanted gear, makes dragons a push over at any level, for the most part I typically restart if the dragon kills a shop keeper or companion.

The thing that makes dragons so easy though are that they always LAND all the [censored] time, and they do that thing where they just HOVER, I get that its to make the game easier to actually beat dragons, but I think itd be ALOT more like actual boss battles if the dragons were flying around instead of making themselves easy targets.. I mean theyre supposed to be very intelligent right? <_<

I assume it is to make melee characters have a chance.

I was leaving Riften and went north up the road when a dragon flew right over my head. I got ready for combat but the dragon started attacking a bear further down the road.

Looking for some entertainment, I just sit back and watched them fight. The bear killed the dragon. I killed the bear. Then I went closer to get the dragon's soul. It was only then that I realized that it was a blood dragon.

This was my first experience with them

I thought it was Dragon - Frost then Blood?

The first frost dragon I fought was kinda easy (Expert difficulty) while the blood dragon waaayy harder. Perhaps I got lucky.

Worth point out that Breton + Lord Stone + Agent of Mara is 65% magic resist without any enchanting what so ever.

Good to know that there are more powerful dragons to come. Looks like my character got caught up in the tavern rumors and didn't get the real scoop from anybody who knows.

Thanks

I fought my first blood Dragon last night. I'm stealth so dragons are a pain. I used up most of my restore health potions and only did about a quarter of damage to it. Then it flew away to attack something on the other side of the river. Then it just disapeared off my radar! 10 minutes later it was back with full health!! :cryvaultboy:
Luckly it began attacking some Thalamore (spelling?) Mages, that had come to kill me. They killed it, I killed the one surviving mage. I'm such a wuss.
