My First Complaint

He also played Lessfar from "Pelle the Conqueror" (Danish movie really, Pelle Erobreren), and he was my favourite character:

English version (Yeah, different voice actors): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3TmUCdh8Kw

The real deal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiypTNvmEbI

Max von Sydow is basically.. A great actor with a great voice - almost like Christopher Frank Carandini Lee, who is my favourite actor :)

Money won't be an issue for BGS as their in a much different situation then they were in 2006. Skyrim will be fine voice wise, heck who knows Max Von Sydow might not even be the biggest voice actor star in the game. Bethesda might have a card up their sleeve and drop a nuke at E3 or some other event saying certain person is in the game and we all go ape crazy. :celebration:

If they do, it better be Christopher Lee. Or Brian Blessed. Or both!

If you go to IMDB and look at the huge cast from NewVegas, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706601/
Then compare it to Oblivion on IMDB. The difference is amazing, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462271/

New Vegas definitely had more of a budget for VO's and Skyrim should have that PLUS some!

Maybe another cameo from some Star Trek actors? Micheal Dorn has been in MassEffect and New Vegas, why not add him in Skyrim .... as a DRAGON!!!

I agree with pretty much everyone else in saying that Max Von Sydow's voice is simply orgismic.

There's one small difference though. Obsidian is based out of california which gave them an easier time to gather bigger names to the game. Bethesda's studio is on the east coast and might not be appetizing to head so far to do voice overwork. I don't think it's going to matter with Skyrim but I could be wrong.

Secondly, the cost of celebrity voices in Oblivion meant the voice budget was blown and all the other voices are the same person.'s repeated for all the other NPCs.

Tell me, how do you KNOW this is why there were so many repeated voices? How do you know that it wasn't that time just wasn't on their side? Or the fact that Oblivion was their first fully voiced game, so they might not have known how to go about it?

Why are people always blaming celebrities in games for the games flaws? That's like saying Mass Effect could've been better if Seth Green wasn't in it.

There sure are a lot of false assumptions in this thread... :shakehead:

I am VERY excited about the new Elderscrolls Skyrim but....!
That voice for the intro movie is terrible.
He sounds like he's at least 80, a bit drunk and his false teeth are loose.
Also some of his slurred words are hard to understand.

I hope this guy's voice won't be used in the game.
I also hope they haven't wasted money on celebrity voices like they did with Oblivion.

I cant believe you dont like his voice, are you mad?
It fits the trailer perfectly....and skyrim.....this guy has done alot of films.
His accent fits skyrim very, very well.
There are some videos on the gameinformer website called "the sounds of skyrim" in one of those videos they let you listen to him a bit more.
Maybe that will change your mind.....i love the way he says thunder in that playback.

Was Seth Green Really in Mass Effect?!

EDIT: That's obvious, I should have known that. That makes Mass Effect even cooler than it already was. Joker was my favorite character!

Yes, he voiced Joker... did a great job IMO.

@ Jinix the Elder
If you played FO3 or New Vegas I'll know they made a huge step in the right direction with number of voice actors, it all felt varied.

They said they hired a large number of voice actors for Skyrim so you're complaints are basically based on your own opinions not facts.

Words sound "slurred" (they really aren't, and I don't think they do anyway) because he doesn't speak English natively. He SHOULD sound 80, he not only is about 80 IRL, but he's voice acting a very old man.

Just a note.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbuQSGe8LS0

In this video, the sound designer for the game says that when it's time to begin voice work, "I'll start bringing in local actors if I can, or start sending out casting scripts to other casting agencies."

So they do go through a casting process. It was also indicated that he sought the role out.

Local actors, that might be a clue that they may possibly use Wes Johnson for some type of voice work.

Why did they hire a celebrity voice actor? Because the character he voices is unique. Esbern is supposed to be a special character in the game, and his voice should be unique to set him apart from all of the other characters that share a race with him. Why the choice of Max von Sydow? When coming up with concepts for a character, you need to imagine his voice with voices you already know. And people know celebrities. Max must've fit their idea of Esbern, which is why they hired him.

Some of you talk about Bethesda as if hiring a single, or even two or three celebrity voice actors will cripple them financially. I'm a little upset that you have such severe doubts over the popularity of Bethesda's game franchises, that they can't earn enough money to pay basic expenses. But you really can't dictate Bethesda's budget without knowing it. Considering how popular Oblivion and Fallout 3 were, and how Bethesda Softworks keeps earning income from other studios, I don't think they're in any desperate need for cash.

If anything, hiring celebrity voice actors is a better alternative than other options. What are you going to do with the extra money? Hire non-famous voice actors? Who's to say that they don't charge just as much, considering they need to make a living and don't have famous Hollywood backgrounds to keep the money flowing? Pay for more development? The quality of work done by the game designers is not affected by funding at all. They're going to work regardless and all they care about are their usual wages. Maybe hire more talent? Although that would increase production speed, it runs a risk of lowering the quality of the game by hiring employees with less experience that aren't familiar with the series at all. Then you're left with other expenses, like publicity stunts and advertising, which would be covered by Bethesda Softworks, the publisher. And that just leaves one last possibility: a hefty bonus for the lead developers...

Max was a good choice, not only because he is good at what he does, but believe it or not it may increase sales by a slim margin. I doubt that people would buy the game solely because he's in it (Although Liam Neeson's presence in Fallout 3 was my motivation to buy) but famous voice actors give extra free publicity. If someone sees the work of Max von Sydow and Skyrim is in there, that is a person who is now aware of the game and may purchase it if it looks interesting. In addition, though it may be a remote afterthought, Best Voice Actor is a category of several video-game related awards. If you can get a good voice actor and win that category, or even be a nominee, you'll attract a wide variety of viewers who are gamers, who may be attracted to the game the more they hear about it. I know there are some games that I didn't care for when I first heard of them, but when they kept popping up all over the place it really forces you to notice, and I changed my mind and bought some of them down the road even.

So, my main point is, Bethesda knows what they're doing. They knew ahead of time how many voice actors they wanted, and know how much they want to spend. Just be glad it's Max von Sydow and not someone who was hired on celebrity status alone, like Tom Cruise or something.

I really like the choice of Max Von Sydow as the voice of the narrator. He fits perfectly. I just hope that we hear him very often throughout the game and not like Patrick Stewart in Oblivion with only the rather brief appearance.

I absolutely love his voice; it's deep, it's textured, coarse and heavy. When he speaks, you pay attention.

I'd hire Max to do all my talking from now on if I could afford it. Max, if you're reading this, shoot me a PM and we'll work something out! :user:

It's probably been said before, but people should probably take note that Max is in fact not a "Hollywood" actor, and is thusly a LOT cheaper than Terence, Patrick, Sean and Liam were. So if you are still thinking that they're wasting half their budget on this guy, please don't shoot yourself and instead have yourself a very nice day, though I sincerely hope you reconsider your point of view.

I bet he was one of their best voice actors that they have used till now and has done a great job wit his narrations and perfectly fits with the old veteran mentor that he is supposed to be.

Just perfect.
