My First day Of High School

Post » Sat Apr 17, 2010 8:18 am

Hm, let's see. He's going to be the new kid at a school that apparently has behavorial problems. He won't know anyone for at least the first week or so. Does it seem like a good idea to you for him to rattle on about how much he loves Lucario?

If he had a peer group that also loved pokemon, then there wouldn't be much problem here. But there isn't one.

Good for you! You're also nineteen years old and out of high school.

Wasn't like that at my schools.

You pretty much have 2 options in high school:
Being yourself and risk being miserable
or beg for acceptance from the mainstream and be another mindless [censored] cruton

No, no it doesn't.

And, as I said before, who gives a flying [censored] about SOCIAL things at high school beyond your own group of close friends? Drama only matters if you CARE. I can't tell you the number of times my friends and I told folks off for being idiots, regardless of what they said later. Those who were our friends were still our friends. Those we didn't care about we still didn't care about.

I'm sorry if your school was some sort of hellish society where friends are lost and gained in the blink of an eye and where you get jumped in the bathrooms for talking about Pokemon at lunch, but that's not how mine was, and honestly, that's not how it is at all.

Find a group of friends, ignore everyone else.

I wholeheartedly agree.

That's not necessarily true. It REALLY depends on the high school itself. If this school as bad as I'm led to believe, then why would Peace want to subject himself to possible violence, and likely verbal abuse?

All to be unique? I'm sorry, but sometimes reality just has to be brought forward. Not everyone is as tolerant or accepting as this forum is.

Highschool isn't as bad as it's made out to be (my sophomore year is coming up). Be yourself, don't be afraid of the preppies or the jocks. Because they're like snakes, much more afraid of you than you are of them. One skater walked up to me and said, "You want to fight, punk?"

He was with all his friends and I responded, "Sure, let's do it."

He backed down. Don't be afraid, but know when to pick your battles. Pay very close attention to their emotions, if they're showing off it's safe to be mr. macho. If they're genuinely angry, play the diplomacy card. Oh and get on good terms with your teachers, saved me tons of times.

In my school people played Pokemon and nobody cared what-so-ever.

Some of you guys are acting like saying you play Pokemon is like going up on stage during a pep rally, taking the mic and listing off your most perverted fetishes one at a time. It wasn't even close to that bad in my high school...

Peace, if lots of people are talking about Pokemon, then talk about Pokemon with them. Just don't let them know how obsessed with it you are. BGSF should be the only place you talk about your Lucario obsession.

Oy. No, those aren't the only options. There's a third option, right in the middle, but you don't seem to want to acknowledge it for some odd reason...

I think I can sum up this thread by saying "High school is a joke, and unless you screw up royally, none of it will matter later."

I mean when I was there I focused my studies on science, and thought that I was gonna use that later. It turns out history was my passion, and my only regret it not taking more history courses. So after 3 years of being an unskilled labourer, finding a job I loved (educational assistant) I'm going back to university to get a Bachelor of Arts in history and English. Then a Bachelor of Education, so that I can teach high school for the rest of my life.

University/college is where it matters.

High school is a joke. Don't take it seriously, kid, and you'll have a great time.

And at my schools it was considered weird to like pokemon after the 6th grade. For them, it was something you liked when you were little, then grew out of to go onto advlt things.

That's some bad advice. You should at least be on name-basis with as many people as possible. Of course there is gonna be the group you identify with the most, but you shouldn't outright shut out other people.

Let me rephrase then:
Find a group of friends, ignore what everyone else has to say about you and what you do.

I don't mean that one should be absolutely hostile to others. Making friend with them is just fine. But if they don't like what you do or how you do it for some convoluted and childish reason, then there's no reason to bend yourself to fit their image of what you should be, nor to rack yourself worrying about what they think of you.

Act steadfast in what you believe in when others attack you, and others will come to respect you, even if they don't like you or understand you.

Are people just ignoring the fact that Peace outright said this school he's going to has had behavorial problems?

And I demand, Orzorn, to know where that blasted avatar of yours came from!

I guess Peace is just going to have to see what his school's stance on it is before revealing his love of Pokemon to them.

*swallows dryly* I'm [censored] then.

Not really. We do not have any other info about the High School ya going attend other than "behavioral problems", which is pretty common to any HS.

You don't chose to be unique, you either are or you aren't

If you are, then you chose to be yourself or not, if you don't have the guts to live life like you want it, you don't deserve to.

I've been to a very good school, a decent one and a very bad one.

Violence was an issue in the latter, the only solution for that is fighting back.

I doubt in an American high school there could be the level of physical violence we have here in shady schools.

I when hardened from the bad school i was in when i arrived at my third high school, the in between one, no one dared to [censored] with me.

If his high school is half-decent only a frown from his part will prevent an attack.

Again my society is very different from the american one, racism is still ok here and there is no political correctness to speak of.

Well, if his guardians are qualified, I would actually suggest that. Public schools are slowly becoming indoctrination centers anyway.

That's not exactly good advice.
Without taking high school seriously, getting into a decent university will be much much more difficult. That doesn't mean you can't still have fun in school and still take it seriously.

You should go to Community College anyway for a year or two. Saves you $40,000.

You're taking his comment out of context. We're talking about high school's social environment. Don't take THAT seriously, because not of it matters.

As my brother and I always joked; "Because High School problems matter." (for those of you who are dense, they do not, that is the joke)

Edit:

Only if you're only doing basics your first year. I took dual credit courses in high school so, this being my first college year, I need no basics at all. All of my classes are part of my major curriculum.

We were in our senior year in high school when someone got the idea that everyone should bring their old game boy to school to play pokemon red/blue/yellow on during recess. So we did, for a few days. It was awesome. Especially the reactions of the people walking by. :P

Apparently high school problems do matter, at least they did to Phoebe Prince.

It's still people in high school, and some of them are very cruel, some ignore you, some will lavish all the attention in the world on you. But don't EVER say high school problems don't matter.

The last few days of my junior year, I brought my Wii and we played Brawl for several hours straight. It was awesome. And what is the freaking draw of Pit to Brawl noobs? (some other people played besides my close friends)

But don't EVER say high school problems don't matter.

They don't.

They do matter, Orzorn, for 4 long, long years. It's easy to say, as someone in college, that high school problems didn't matter, and you're right, they don't matter now. But while you're trapped in High School for 4 years? You bet your ass they matter.

They only matter as much as they matter TO YOU. Things are only a problem as much as you MAKE THEM ONE YOURSELF.

Say someone was making up rumors behind your back.

You can either go totally overboard and full out have a fight with them.

Or you can ignore it, because the only people who would listen to or believe those are the same people you don't care about anyways.

Even more so, don't even socialize with people who aren't your close friends. You don't have to talk to these people, and if you, for any reason think its important that you do, that's your own problem that you created yourself.

Trust me, I was in high school for as long as everybody else is.
