Get your weapon off choice, leave the vault, pick any direction and go explore :)

Just take your time. Go any direction you choose and check out whatever you run across. The great thing about a single player game is that you can do whatever you want when you want to. Exploring is a great way to start. Fight low level creatures.

Also there is usually a tutorial in the beginning to help you get started.

And remember, if you see a blue box that say "Police Box", just head the other way. He won't take you even if you beg him... because you use guns.

He might, if you're doing a pacifist run and focusing on Charisma, Intelligence, lockpick skills and science. :D

First off don't get the impression that Fallout is a fast paced action game. It never has been. Roam around - you will find interesting people and places.

Watch the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. videos over at Bethesda.net. There is also a section about character creation that might help you.

I got a buddy who gets overwhelmed when playing a game like this. "Too many things to do! Too many quests! I don't have time for this!" he says. He got stressed out 20 minutes into New Vegas because he had the ultimate edition and the DLC quests popping up right away sunk him.

So I tell you if you are the same as my buddy: focus on the main quest and ignore everything else. Then, after, do the same with other quests. One at a time.

OP I have a buddy in the same boat as you.

Like the other folks have said explore, bethesda always have cool things to find in their games.

You've already got off to a good start asking for help here amongst folks who know the series. My buddy said he didn't really care about his stats... so I think he will struggle.

In regards to the game lore, there are a bunch of videos and video series dedicated to that you can watch on Youtube to get prepared for what kind of gameworld you can expect to find your self in. of course you can also read through the timeline here: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

A pacifist in the wasteland is merely a person who hasn't been seen shooting other people... yet.

One thing I did pick up from reviews is that death in Fallout 4 is fast and brutal. More so than Fallout 3. Set your autosave time down to 5 minutes (the minimum),

and when you die, think about what you did wrong. Do it better when you load your last save. That reviewer went back and got / made weapons specific for that battle. He loved it.

No, there's no 'import' feature, but have the photo handy and have fun sculpting your appearance...

In Fallout I find it more interesting to ask questions first and shoot later. In NV it felt good "helping" one of the main factions only to screw them over and kick them out of the state in the end. So always look for opportunities to tailor quest results to your liking. More often than not you'll find them.

Deathclaws have the word "death" in their name for a reason.

Take your time, get used to the game mechanics. Also, don't be afraid to start over after a few hours of playing. I tend to start games over a lot. Especially games I've never played before. I started the Witcher 3 over three times. I had never played any Witcher games before.., I was just playing around and getting used to the system. Once I was comfortable with how the game played I started my "for real" play.

Have you played Skyrim, if so think Skyrim it would be more like SKyrim than any other game except FO3 and FO:NV

Save, save and save. Save early and often. Don't just rely on autosave. Did I mention save. - I don't know how many times someone comes on and complains that their save files were corrupted and didn't have extra saves and blames Bethesda.

I almost forgot to tell you the one most important thing to do when playing games by Bethesda.

Save often and save saves!

Best point!.. forgot that point as well. Permanent saves, rotating saves, save save save.. Saves are your friends and will keep you from much frustration. Love your saves.. keep them close and thank them for their dedication to keeping you sane.

Although the game tries to make things feel urgent, don't feel compelled to always immediately do the next thing in your quest list. Take your time, explore, do other things, build / craft. The next path in the Main Quest will wait patiently.

Talk to the people, understand the politics (who hates who), and follow your gut.

But most of all, have fun, and if you don't know what to do next, don't worry -- just explore what is over the next hill or in the building across the street, or through that closed door, you will find something to do.
