First Fallout character!

Post » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:12 am

Ok guys my friend just let me borrow Fallout 1 (the original).

I need help with a character build and lots of advice!! Help me out homies!!

EDIT: Ok, if borrowing is a "no no" let me know and close the thread. Sorry in advance! Again, I'm very very sorry if borrowing is out of the question, and I will promptly return his game and purchase the retail version. (its like $6 or something...)

Do mods get upset with the concept of borrowing games? Might want to edit.

That would be rediculous, as you could have just as easily had your friend uninstall the game and sell it to you as used for a penny.
But that's off topic. As for character for fallout 1, its been way too manyyears for me to remember anything but shady sands and Tandi.

EDIT: By borrow, you mean your playing the game on his computer, right?

Every game software store in my neiborhood has a vast selection of "pre-owned" games. Reselling used games is not illegal. Depending on the EULA, the only violation would be if the game was installed on multiple computers without a sight license. So stop worrying, and get back on topic.

It depends on how you want to play the game. If you're going for combat, high agility is a must. You certainly never need strength higher than 6, because power armor will give you +4 to it.

He asked for advice on character creation, not a lecture. And what, you never borrowed a game before?

Anyway, maybe you should check out some guides, they help in the character making process. But really, its whatever you want, whatever you prefer.

Read the descriptions of all the choices so you know what each does. Decide what kind of character you want: are you mainly going to use small guns? Melee weapons? Good a science and smarts or just brute force? Etc., you get the idea. I prefer for my three primary skills to be Small Guns (lots of small guns in the game, energy weapons and big guns are usually later in the game), Lockpick (I just can't stand locked doors and containers, always some good loot in them), and Speech (speech is extremely helpful in getting your way in dialog situations, getting more information, which is always great). Small Guns and Speech are a must for me, for your third I usually do Lockpick, but it really depends on what kind of character you wish to make.

For S.P.E.C.I.A.L.:
-Strength - Strength is for determining what weapons can be used and how much you can carry. Higher Strength is required for some weapons, like Big Guns, some Melee, and Energy, but your strength can be increased throughout the game. I put it at 4 (I choose the Gifted optional Trait, which I will explain later).

-Perception - Determines your ranged combat. If you're going to be a sharpshooter (i.e. use the Sniper Rifle a lot), I put it at 6, but you should start with at least 5.

-Endurance - Determines your hit points. I usually keep it at 5. Give yourself more if you like close combat.

-Charisma - This determines bartering, how people react to you, and it's not really all that useful in Fallout 1. I just keep it at 5, but you could just put it down to 1 and distribute the points elsewhere if you like.

-Intelligence - Probably the most important, high intelligence is very valuable. I start with at least 7.

-Agility - Determines how many Action Points you have, and also effects many skills. The higher the better; I usually start with at least 6, but if you put your charisma to 1 you could add those to here (or to endurance or whatever you want).

-Luck - Good for getting special encounters (like the most powerful weapon in the game ;) ), and it determines your critical chance, and its good if you're a sniper. I put it at 6, but no less than 5.

Optional Traits (you can choose at most 2, or none at all):

-GIFTED! Gifted adds +1 to all S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats, but lowers your skills stats (doesn't matter, it's well worth it). Probably the best Trait in the game.

-Second is up to you; you could just choose Bloody Mess, but it gets boring after awhile (and you're bound to see some bloody animations at some point anyway). I usually choose Small Frame, which gives me +1 Agility, but can't carry as much, but I don't usually play the pack rat in this game so it doesn't matter to me.

There you go, hope I didn't miss anything. Oh, Age has no effect on the game, six has some effect on different dialog in the game (whether you're male or female) but doesn't effect the game overall. So, my typical character build (with the optional traits applied) is as follows:

S: 5
P: 8
E: 6
C: 6
I: 8
A: 8
L: 7

Optional Traits: Gifted, Small Frame

Primary Skills: Small Guns, Lockpick, Speech

Have fun! :D

Thank you Majosha, that was a hell of a post. Just what I was looking for! Most guides I've seen just give info on the stats, but not which ones are good or what they personally use.

Also, if anyone has any gameplay tips I would be grateful. i.e. places to go, weapons to get early on, or things to help get my character started.

Check out http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Nearly_Ultimate_Fallout_Guide
It has all the details you would want.
Of course it's a walkthrough, so don't read past the 'Area walkthrough' section if you don't want any spoilers.
Before that though it has the most detailed description of all available choices + pros & cons for each + a list of suggested characters that work well.

Well you should first install the latest official patch (well, semi-official) to make it Fallout v1.2 (http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1076), and fan made patch (http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1075), if you don't have done so already. If you are playing the game through the recently release Fallout Trilogy, it will already have the the offical v1.2 patch installed, and during the installation you can choose to install the fan made patch as well (or just use the link I provided, it is the same patch). These patches fix a lot bugs and are a must.

Yes, Per's guide (the one posted above) is one of the best, especially when it comes to character creation and perks and stuff.

You also only have 500 or 400 ingame days to finish the game, the reasons are mentioned when you start your character. Try not to rely on the NPCs too much, like... never give Ian a gun, make sure the NPCs don't stand in front of you on a one-tile wide bridge, etc. The NPC allies are frankly put, going to die before the final area of the game pretty much because you have no real control over them, even Fall Out 2's dubious NPC ally combat control is thousands of times better than what Fall Out 1 offers... Get outta my way Sulik! Thanks! (Fallout 2 NPC who clogs doorways for me).

The Fallout Trilogy version of Fallout is the patched version that has the 13 year or whatever time limit for the super mutant problem.
