First house recommendation, other than Breezehome?

Post » Tue Jun 11, 2013 9:43 am

I am just now leaving Riverwood, and I don't feel like pursuing the Main Quest just yet.

I am desperately needing my first house.

I was wondering if there is a much simpler path that I can take, directly to getting a house. One that does not involve having to do as much as it takes to get Breezehome (I have acquired Breezehome before.)

I don't care about the money. The expense is no concern.

I would just like to know if there is a simpler town, simpler path to getting my first house.

I would like to just quickly get ahold of a place.

As a sidenote, I really miss Oblivion right now. I keep thinking about the Waterfront shack for 1000 septims.

Extremely simple to acquire immediately after leaving the sewers, just walk in and buy it.

Well if you have Hearthfire you can buy a house quickly, just talk to the jarl of falkreath, dawnstar or morthal. it only requires on quest for each Jarl.

Also theres a house in Markarth that you can get if you do a quest for Molag Bal.

For me if i want to get a house quickly. then i just look for mills or small shacks. and kill whoever lives there and take their place. Half-moon mill is one of them. but thats just me.

Also There's this place that you can get if you kill the wizard inside it. not sure if the bed inside is owned or not.

You could use any of the shacks or cabins with safe storage, like the Alchemist's Shack or Riverside Shack, or Anise's Cabin if you don'tmind killing someone for it. Some dungeons are also safe after being cleared.

Another option is to marry someone with a house.

Depending on what level you are and how quick you can make money, you could go for any other city house (Honeyside is the cheapest after Breezehome I think), or build the small house on one of the land plots. This requires more work, of course.

See http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Housesfor a list of possible houses, shacks and other places to live and store your things.

Dawnstar requires a higher level than Falkreath, just saying. Not sure about Morthal.

Here is a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Safe that, once cleaned, can be used as player homes.

They do not reset and the storage is safe.

This is really a better topic for the spoiler forum. I would click on the "report" button and ask a Moderator to move it for you.

Angi (that witch near riverwood) shack is the best.

1. Easy to get for both good and evil characters.

2. Map marker

3. No loading screen to safe container

4. Alchemy and enchanting table

5. It has skulls

I thought that was Anise? Isn't Angi the archer lady?

That is correct.

And one should be careful about storage upstairs. While the cellar is all safe, the upstairs barrels and I think... one of the sacks, will respawn.

You may wish to consider Honeyside in Riften. Part of the "Deal with the Skooma Trade" related quests that allow the player to gain the Jarl's friendship also go toward becoming friend of the city which makes the Thaneship easier to obtain. Honeyside, when fully upgraded, has not only enchanting and alchemy stations but it also has a tanning rack (the only tanning rack in vanilla which the player can own).

I do have Hearthfire. Just have not installed it yet. I am looking for a simpler path.

All of the recommended places you gave do not have safe storage. They all respawn, except for the Markath house you mentioned (Molag Bal).

I am considering it, but from what I read, the storage in the celler is extremely minimal. I was hoping for at least one chest.

Perhaps. Still, I am looking for a path that is not so complicated.

I have settled on either The Wreck of The Icerunner, OR Mistwatch.

Has anyone done the quests related to either of those?

I agree. I see the OP just posted for a simpler solution, but it is a good long term home. Honeyside shares a slight benefit with the Hearthfire homes, you can enter directly without going into the city first (bounty? Want to stash stolen loot before chancing the guards?). And Iona doesn't share Lydia's creepy 'I like to watch' interest in watching you sleep. And if you want to marry a Housecarl, the Temple is mere yards away.

There is a satchel, barrel, two sacks, and a cupboard down there.

Honeyside, can take a while to get into, pending the number of quests you have to forego. Reports have varying results.

What are opinions on using The Wreck of The Icerunner (ship) for a home and/or the corresponding location, "Broken Oar Grotto"? The quest "lights out" has to be completed in order for the wrecked ship to appear. Worth messing with? Both the Grotto, and the ship have safe storage.

Then there is Mistwatch.

...nvmd.

The best bet is to start with Anise's Cabin. It's not like you are forced to live there forever.

Then... when you clear a place and have checked it out, look for it on the list to see if it respawns. If not, and you absolutely love it, then move in.

?For first storage, either Fendall or Sven has safe storage, as long as it's on the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Containers#Safe_Containers.

I have Faendal.

I am using this page as my only reference. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Safe

I have read about every single one of these (all 68). I will settle on Anise's cabin for starters if I must, but I have a ton of stuff between Faendal and me.

I was wondering about Wreck of the Icerunner and Broken Oar grotto.

Is the "Lights Out" quest fairly simple?

Avoid Broken Oar Grotto. Once it is cleared there may be quests you can no longer do if they direct you there

Ma... It's been awhile since I've been through that questline. IIRC it is rather lengthy.

While some places look cool and would seemingly make a great home base, they aren't much more than a great big storage container. I would look for places that will cater to a craft or two and even then, are located where I have access to others nearby.

But if storage is your main gig, then the world is your oyster.

Complicated?

Player gives a healing potion to a NPC. Player asks about where NPC got skooma. Player reports to Jarl. Jarl sends player to (de facto) clear out warehouse and find information. Report to Jarl. Jarl sends player to clear a bandit cave. Report back to Jarl and purchase Honeyside. While there are other vanilla homes with only two quests to gain the Jarl's friendship, there are level requirements involved in some and Hjerim requires getting into the Civil War questline.

Suit yourself.

to get a house in raven rock you just need to do a few quests. (dragonborn needed)

or you could build one of the hearthfire addon houses

Yes, it is a very simple quest (if I remember correctly). Look it up on the internet so that you can be the judge of whether it's complicated or not.

Taken from UESP

This house, the second-least expensive home that can be obtained, becomes available for purchase during a quest for the Jarl of Riften. The quest can be started at the Fishery outside Riften; look for an Argonian woman, Wujeeta, working inside the Fishery. However, you need not contact her at the Fishery to start the quest since she can be contacted outside work hours to initiate the quest as well.

Note that the Jarl will not even mention selling the house until you have completed the associated quests Helping Hand, The Raid and Supply and Demand, and also built a reputation with Riften citizens by doing a few general quests for the people of the town (see I Done Got Thaned! for details). Honeyside must be purchased from her steward Anuriel in order to complete the quest and receive the title of Thane of Riften.

Complicated? Yes. I have never even been to Riften.

I decided on using Helgen Keep.

I don't know why I never thought of this before or for that matter, why nobody else mentioned it!

I read that it is 100% safe. Of course I will clear out the bandits first.

The uesp says that Helgen Keep is safe and never respawns.

Does that mean the bandits will never return once I clear them out?

Usually I make Breezehome my first house. This time I saved enough money, became Thane of Falkreath and built Lakeview Manor. But I only did the main small house as funds are low early in the game. Then gradually built on to it.

Hjerim not only requires completing

Spoiler
but the CW as well. Something to think about.
Spoiler
is also very buggy if you're not on PC and have the Unofficial Skyrim patch.

That is, of course, your choice. You do realize that the player does not have to become Thane to purchase the house, right?

The bandits will respawn outside, most likely if you're gone more than 10 days. Just look at it as cash on the spot every time you go back home if you've been away for a while. They won't venture inside the keep though.
