First impression of Skyrim

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 1:20 am

So when I heard about Skyrim, I was very exited!
But now after slaying my first dragon and learning about the shout. I am nothing more than disappointing...

I was so exited to play it, so yesterday I went down and bought myself a PS3 and of course the game, Skyrim.
I pack out my PS3, fire it up, gets everything updated and starts to play Skyrim. I get to the first "cut seen" when I'm on a wagon as a prisoner.
But the very first thing I notice is that the voice is of sync with the mouth, there is gaps between the different layer of textures so I can see right in to what is known as "blue hell".
I think to myself, "Huh... that is odd, maybe it's just this one time". But I am wrong.
Before I get into the city the rode get's to a point where it's a 80 degree angle. My first reaction to that is "Wow... this is a very stable horse that can walk normal with a wagon full of prisoner and a driver in it. And still not get affected by it?"
When I get into this first city, it's already in ruins and the texture on the buildings are rendered so it ends up blurry and looks very very bad.
My reactions to the town in ruins was "Hmm... looks like a dragon or something have burned this place to the ground...?".

So then I get to the point where I get to customize my character. when that is done and I am going to follow the nice lady, the game freezes for 3 minutes...
My mind is blown... The game everyone have been waiting for freezes on a brand new PS3...
The next thing that happens is that a dragon that don't move at all comes gliding true the air. I believe gliding is the right word to use when you see a dragon coming true the air and not moving at all.
Then you can see the dragon is going to breath fire on the ground as it glides by. and you see it going in a 80 degree angle with it's nose down and then all of a sudden it have change it's angle to strait forward and then jumps true it's turn as it turns around and is going for another sweep.

I cant believe what I'm seeing with my own eyes, I am just standing there with my mouth open in shock. The developers have not even tried to make a smooth and soft and graceful turn as we know the dragons would have.
Have the developers rushed true to game to just get it done and sell it? I am hoping this is the only time I'll see that bad animation on a dragon in this game, but I am wrong...
When I get to the point where I am going to kill the dragon, it's the same deal. No animation at all, only a dragon doing weird turns and all of a sudden hovers up in the air and barely moves, so I get my bow and arrow and shoots it.

How can the developers have missed this?
The beginning is one of the most important part of the game! This is where the players are going to get "hook'd" and get the impression that this is an awesome game and this is what I want to spend time playing!
I'm not saying that the beginning is the only important thing in the game, some place in the middle and the end of the game is the most important in my opinion. Cause people need a reason to sick with the game to the end, and that needs to be given in the beginning and later in the game given the feeling that they are getting closer it their goals. And in the end, it needs to be a good ending so that the players feel like all the hard work and hours they put into the game was worth it!

Another thing I find very annoying is when I'm in a main quest in a city and I am trying to listen to the one that is telling me something important or is having a speech. A random NPC get's too close to me and starts to talk to me about their problems and then the sound of the one I'm trying to listen to get's lowered a lot and the subtitle for that person I'm trying to listen to dissapairs! This is something that is annoying a lot cause I like to hear what they are saying and get all the story and other things with me cause that gets me in to character where I can feel I am a part of the game and I get a better feeling of why we are doing these different things. I could not care less about a random child that don't want to work at their family's store and want me to help her out when I'm getting a motivation speech from a dark elf before I am going to face and possible kill my first dragon! And I can't just kill that child ether. (I like to be brutal and show no mercy in RPG games. Specially when I have a gigantic sword in my hand that I can use to cut of the head of thous who dare challenge me! Or just annoys me)

I am the only one who is having this much trubble with the game?
Am I the only one who experience all these bugs?
Am I the only one who things this is not exepteble from the game developers?
Give me a comment below on what you think so far.

First, thanks for voicing your concerns in a constructive manner and providing examples of your issues. Your post is also relatively well written and readable, so don't worry too much about your grammar.

However, I have to admit I haven't encountered your problems. Maybe it is because I was busy taking in everything, but I didn't notice any texture problems or bad seams during the intro. The dialogue was also fine and synced. Same with the Dragon's flight and attack pattern. The only issue we have in common is annoying NPCs interrupting someone else's speech with their own dialogue, which I concede is jarring. Usually, if you move away from them towards the one you actually want to listen to, his volume will take over again. For everything else, I do not know what to say to you. Everything on my PC version was correct, same for two others I watched play through the opening on an Xbox and PS3, respectively.

Yes, I have discovered that possibilities that you can move away from the NPC's that overwrite the one talking, but some times you get lock'd in a position so that you can't move at all. And that is quite frustrating when you have 3 other NPC's talking to you when you are trying to listen to this one guy !>.

I like to play these types of games on my TV and the comfort of my sofa and have a small controller in my hand.

Plus my Xbox 360 got the red ring of fire :/

No one I know who is playing this on XBox has ANY of the issues you are experiencing on PS3. You bought the wrong console, my friend

Theres obviously something wrong with your copy, and I mean more about your original comment than that video. I haven't experienced any of these problems, dragons actually fly very fluidly for a creature that shouldn't be able to fly.

On the downside, my savegame is 6.6Mb, and it hasn't stuttered much yet, but its definitely starting to think about it at times, and that makes me sad.

Have you tested any other game in your PS3? Maybe have got a bad console, rare but it does happen. The issues you are having I have not seen or heard of before so it looks likly somthing to do with your particular set up.

Not necessarily true. I haven't had any of these problems. The dragons move gracefully and beautifully. My husband is playing on XBOX and our textures are comparable. I have a new 160 slim by the way. Honestly, I think you might want to return your console and try another one. The problems seem random, as not EVERYONE with a PS3 is having them.

Don't blame Bethesda for having difficulty porting their game to the PS3, blame Sony for making the 7th gen equivalent of the Atari Jaguar, with more processors and crap hidden away in ways that nobody knows how to develop games for.

Damn... looks like I am the only one that is having these problems. At least so many at once. I got a Friend of mine to come over to look at all the bugs I am having problems with. He was surprised to see all the bug, well not all of them, of course some of the bugs was gone when he came to take a look at it. But the dragons that is not flying like they should is still a problem huge problem. and when I got up to Parralexx or what his name is, he started spinning up in the air when he was talking. It was very strange, it was a real "wtf..." moment...

@the guy who is calling me a troll. If you look at youtube, you find a lot of people that is showing the same bugs that I have. So how am I a troll?
