My first memories of Oblivion

One of the mods that I'd least want to do without is SubRosa's Forest Friend Amulet.
My fav too but for some reason it doesn′t work anymore

Hmm , not a whole lot of amazing to add to this, but my memories of Oblivion and "the first time" are fairly succinct. I remember stumbling through the character creation screens trying to create a normal looking human. Think I had to load and reload at least 3 times each on the width of the head, and also the width of the nose and space between the eyes. Eventually succeeded quite well though, Rexx was every bit the dashing imperial. Next struggle was getting used to the controls. I'd just finished FF XII, well as far I was ever going into it, and the enter key for that game was the same as the "Jump" key in Oblivion. Naturally I boosted my acrobatics pretty substantially through the tutorial dungeon, and when the Blade said "I think you're an Acrobat" near the end of it, I started laughing, and thought, no, I'm just spastic! I do remember that the trip through this dungeon immediately hooked me on the game though, the musical ambience, the lighting, and the goblin character designs, had the hair raising on my arms.

Although it probably wasn't that long time wise, the tutorial felt pretty clastrophobic, and I breathed a sigh of relief, once I reconnected with the emperor's party, and upon finishing the event finally found the way out. Unfortunately it was pitch black outside, I don't even remember seeing Vilverin  . I ended up following the walls of the prison back towards a main gate into the city, and watching as a few AI characters did their thing. I was nervous, being an escaped prisoner, but figured a guard was probably the best option to gain some info. That went OK, but as he turned to go I accidently dropped into a crouch , saw the red items , figured, oh yeah a silver sword would be handy at level 1 and pressed the take button. Bad idea, verry bad... I had to pay up, what no money? then to prison I go again. Hell no, been there, didn't want to go back, whole world to explore yet! Chose fight option. REALLY BAD IDEA, quickly learned I could halfways fend him off, no way I was going to win though, and then discovered his buddies were also rushing to the cause. Died with my hand on the door. Ever so glad I had saved after exiting the sewer though..... Auto Reloaded, and kept my hands to myself from there on....

I'm pretty sure my first time crawling out of the sewers with Lady Anne it was sunny outside. I was lucky to get blown away by the full Cyrodiilic effect. :) :geek:

Yes, I know I missed a real "Wow" moment now, especially after reading through this thread, but I don't feel too deprived. I think the first time I really understood the scope of the game world came when I exited the city onto the bridge heading west towards Chorrol. It was daylight by then, and I could see several ruins/forts scattered around the waters edge. To heck with finding the priory, adventure was there for the taking.

Oblivion was one of my first RPGS of the type. I remember following the main quest because I wasn't entirely aware I could avoid it and do a zillion other things. Needless to say I ended up in Kvatch at level 1 (didn't realize I needed to sleep to level) and wondered why I kept getting completely owned. I spent my first 10 hours trying to fight through that oblivion gate. I felt marvelous when I did but when I finally began figuring things out I was like, REALLY?

Wow--I feel really old now. My first RPG was the original Dragon Warrior aka Dragon Quest on the NES. The Tooth Fairy gave it to me for my last baby tooth.

Uh-huh. The last time the Tooth Fairy visited me, Eisenhower was President. :P

Love your avatar. "Klaatu barada nikto." The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

That’s a great story and you write it well, kind of reminds me of some of my duh moments. Keep it up.

For all we know pinkempyreal may be the same age as you are. Morrowind was my first RPG and I also lost my last tooth during the Eisenhower administration. ;)

Last baby tooth, I think you meant to say. Otherwise, we need to be calling the Guinness Book of World Records.

Just joking.

I think my Great-Uncle Oliver lost his last tooth in the Eisenhower administration, too. Then they gave him a great new set, that he could take out at night. The tooth fairy never seemed to be interested in that kind, because they were always still there in the glass in the morning.

No, sir, a maxillary lateral incisor. It all happened during the hotly-contested 1956 U.S. Presidential election primary. I was an Adlai Stevenson supporter and after a few drinks I got into a fist fight with this yahoo who backed Estes Kefauver. He lost two teeth. Many of us lost teeth during that election year. You might say it was a banner year for dentists.

Haha. Is 24 old? Before Oblivion I mostly stuck to games on the SNES and N64 as a casual gamer (but hardcoe Zelda fan). It wasn't until I moved out that I got into serious gaming so needless to say I missed out on a lot of great games. And once you've played more modern games it is hard to go back to the classics. One of these days I will finish Morrowind... Maybe.

Another one of my first memories is luring out some bandits from the market district sewers. It was fun to watch the guards come running to mow them down! :D

Ha ha this is a good one. I think I might have been way too afraid to go back into those sewers early-on. Only with Wanda Bone did I first do so, but she didn't show up until maybe 1 1/2 years after I got more comfortable with the game.

I can be very cautious in the beginning when playing new games and Oblivion is no exception. I always grow tired of it though pretty soon and get a lot tougher in a short amount of time which actually disappoints me.

But I was (somewhat) glad I had performance issues back then as it forced me to stay in the Imperial City until I got the upgrades. I felt really safe and comfortable behind the tall walls so I for one did not want open cities! :D

I see.

I just remembered another early memory. I remember getting the game, leaving the sewers, immediately going to Weynon Priory with Lady Anne to deliver the Amulet, and abandoning her game altogether. That entire sequence of events was so interesting and immersive to me, and I wanted to do it all over again.

I started with a second character, whose name I've literally forgotten. I did the same thing with her: went up to deliver the Amulet. As I was climbing the hill, there's an area on the road where Lady Anne got attacked by a rat. As I was climbing the same area with my 2nd character, I assumed the same rat would be in the same place, but was surprised to find it didn't come after me.

That was pretty cool, realizing that the enemies out in the countryside are somewhat random. I wouldn't just be seeing the same exact enemy in the same exact spot every time, is what I mean to say.

The randomness is but one thing I like about the game and I don′t mind that the things I find (or rather Lothran ) isn′t placed by a dev. If it had been and I knew about it, then that would really be immersive breaking to me.

My first memories are just not knowing what to do. It was my first Elder Scrolls game, and I was a noob. I ran all the way to Anvil for some reason and started doing the Knights of the Nine. It was probably the best ever first quest you could ever have. Becoming the Divine Crusader of all of Tamriel was an amazing experience, when I was still getting a hand on things in the game.

Ah, I miss being a noob

In my case, I had come from a long line of video game RPGs and "RPGs". Even some of the better ones like Baldur's Gate have the exact same enemies in the same places.

If you mean enemies, I agree. I like the randomness in enemies and I don't even mind scaling. But I sure miss the tons of interesting and unique hand-placed loot that the devs scattered around the game world in Morrowind. It made exploring all the more fun and exciting for me. Even if I never planned to actually go out and find or use any of it. Just knowing it was out there somewhere in the game world was cool.

When all loot in a game is rigidly controlled by a random number generator and drawn from generic loot lists and all of it matches my character's level, some of the fun has gone out of exploring for me.

Couldn't have said it better myself. What I would like is Morrowind's placed items to discover combined with skyrim unqiue dungeons.

To the OP my first memory of Oblivion was stepping out of the tutorial dungeon and having repeated CTDs - graphics card was dying and it didn't like Oblivions water.
