First Person camera clipping through wallsobjects glitch...

Post » Tue Jun 16, 2015 10:54 pm

I'm having this problem where if you get too close to a wall or object in first person, the camera clips through, most often on edges, sometimes in the middle, and you can see whatever is behind (which usually isn't anything good or anything the player is supposed to see). It's not a collision issue per se, as I can't walk through the walls/objects, merely see through them. It isn't completely game breaking, but it may as well be since it is very immersion breaking when it happens.

I feel like this can be remedied with some setting either in ini or the video card options but I can't find any specific info about this glitch and all the "general tweaking" guides are severely outdated. I've been trying to tweak my settings to get the best graphics possible at a decent playable performance, but so much info is very outdated, including the guide here from 2011...

I have "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti" graphics card and the latest patch for Skyrim, including the Unofficial patches, Dragonborn, Dawnguard, and the patches for those. I am not using an ENB, but I may use one just for shadows eventually, once I get all the LOD settings, etc. right.

I will post my SkyrimPrefs.ini in spoiler tag..

Some of my settings may look a bit weird, as I am trying to tweak settings and it is a painful trial-and-error process with nothing but outdated guides and info to go on.

I'll try to get a screenshot of the glitch in a few, but does anyone have any clue what setting might cause this? The only thing I have read that is close has to do with the FOV setting, which I haven't knowingly altered. Any help with this would be appreciated.

If it's not just at the extreme edges of the view, then FOV isn't the issue. I run on triple monitors at an effective 5966x1080 resolution, so I get the effect at the edges a lot.

The first person camera isn't in the center of the head (or you'd see the back of your eyeballs, which can happen briefly during the first/third switch), so there's always going to be the possibility that the camera will be beyond the collision surface of the player's head and get beyond where that can go. A large collision volume for the player would fix it only at the expense of something else becoming unrealistic, so quit banging your head on the walls! :wallbash:

I don't know what changes you have made to the ini files, but back them up if you want, delete your ini files, let the game create new ones, and THEN:

Install that mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/57859/?

IT MAY FIX YOUR CLIPPING PROBLEMS !!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Spoiler
What is the difference from other 1st person body mods?

Unlike other first person body mods, this mod is designed to replicate the look and feel of vanilla first person. It enables a hybrid mode where it uses the 1st person arms with the 3rd person body and there is no head bob. This mod is also much easier to install and requires minimal configuration (but has an ini file if required). For a more visual comparison, see Brodual's video in the videos tab.

Does the mod use scripts/have any issues when uninstalling?

No, this mod is a skse plugin dll. It does not have an esp file and doesn't use any scripts. So there are no issues with uninstalling the mod and causing bugs with the saved game.

What are some recommended SKSE_EnhancedCamera.ini setting tweaks?

Most of the ini is already set to recommended values but there are some settings you can change depending on your preferences.

bEnableHeadBob - Can be enabled if you prefer a head bob.

fFirstPersonFOV - Can be set if you prefer a higher fov.

fNearDistanceXXX - Should set lower when using higher fov to prevent camera clipping.

bFirstPersonXXX - Enables/disables 1st person during forced 3rd person events. Can be disabled if you don't like the head bob.

bEnableHeadFirstPerson - If enabled this may allow you to see your hair in 1st person.]

Haha, funny.

The thing is, I can walk slowly into a wall as well and it happens, as well as turning the 1st person camera from side to side when I am close to something, not just running into a wall. I just tested some more in game though, and it appears that if I run the game with either the Skyrim default launcher or the SKSE launcher, it doesn't have this glitch, only when I launch the game through Mod Organizer. The obvious differences being with the former 2, none of my mods (except maybe the official texture pack) are active. Perhaps more importantly, though, Mod Organizer uses a separate set of configuration files from the normal Skyrim launcher (and probably SKSE launcher as well)... so I am switching my ini files around to see if the glitch still shows up... if I can rule out a mod issue then maybe I can zero in on a setting in the prefs file... *fingers crossed*

HAH! I had been looking in the wrong place - SkyrimPrefs.ini but I narrowed it down to a (glaringly obvious) line in the Skyrim.ini flie:

"fNearDistance=25.0000"

I guess I added this line when I was trying to find a solution for Z-fighting on distant mountain textures...

Funny how the person that came up with that fix even said that it might cause clipping which they saw as no big deal as long as this setting helped lessen the Z-fighting. I guess I'd prefer not to have the clipping and either deal with or find another solution for Z-fighting. Just goes to show how much graphics tweaking is a matter of personal preference.

Thanks for the mod suggestion, Mark41. I will definitely check it out. I definitely miss the old style of first person perspective horseback riding from Daggerfall and Oblivion and never understood why they didn't at least allow the option in Skyrim. I was planning to look for a mod to address that very thing before I noticed my clipping problem. :goodjob:

Maybe this will turn out to be that "just one more mod" that I need before I can actually play Skyrim soon...
