First Person Helmet Sight Obstruction

To be honest, I wouldn't like that, and leaving it to the modders (as is obviously do-able) would be a good idea, otherwise a toggle option would be OK.

I voted no - I much prefer to see the entire view in 1st person, it helps alot with immersion.

In real life I would quickly get so used to the obstruction of my helmet that I wouldn't even "see it" anymore, my brain would largely ignore it for the details I was actually looking at. I find that's harder in a video game, its always there like a cockpit-windshield rails.

I'm all for realism, but I think this goes too far in that direction IMHO.

With my stance above about obstructed vision, I do say I'd like to have the very edges of the screen (Corners, top center, and lower center) have mild obstruction to indicate the helmet worn, especially if we can see our bodies when we look around in 1st-person. (Not being able to do so is an Obsolete Technology Limitation)

However, the purpose of this is to reward the player with an indication of the really cool helmet they're wearing (Especially if it has a cool-looking visor shape), not to make wearing a helm a "tradeoff" or "Drawback" of any sort.

I think it shouldn't obstruct your view largely but should be noticeable near the edges of your screen, such as in Interstellar Marines when your helmet is on.

Sounds like a good idea, until you play for five minutes, take the helmet off, see the difference, and never wear a helmet again.
I agree with this, and here is why.

In Fallout: New Vegas, I initially liked the idea of having to use iron sights in order to shoot. Five minutes into the game, and I was annoyed with how inaccurate I was and how much of a terrible shot I became, that every single fight ended up being terrible. Found myself shooting from the hip 9/10 times, and sniping without a scope was more trouble than it was worth.

If it was hard enough to fire from iron sights , then having obstructed vision with helmets will make me miserable.

This shouldn't even be an option. There are a million ideas like this one that are incredibly impractical and if Bethesda tried to implement them, this game would be Elder Scrolls V: Vaporware. So, when someone like the OP (no offense) comes along and suggests this totally unreasonable idea, even as an option, we must reject it whole-heartedly. Because creating even the option takes developer time. It might seem harmless to include any one idea, but there are a BAZILLION bad ideas that could be made into "options".

Luckily, Bethesda has proved that they're not stupid and they would never waste time on this stuff.

As long as it was done well. And the helmet makes a significant difference--as in head shots kill much easier without helms to keep you wearing them.

I do want to have 1st person helmet views because I feel that it adds to the immersion of the game, especially in combat. Sure, it makes playing in 1st person harder, but it would be more realistic and combat would be more intense, at least IMO. Maybe if it was a toggle-able feature it would be better.

However, I doubt they're going to make 1st person helmet views.

Except, as I noted earlier, it is not realistic when coupled with the limitations of looking through a monitor.

Third person should have benefits from using it. You gain the ability to peep around corners and no sigh obstruction for less accuracy

I respect your argument scow. What you say is very true and I can completely understand why you would think that, but, in truth, your argument, as well thought out and articulated as its been, is limited. There is no reason why these effects that you believe to be impossible to implement because of the limitations that monitors present, can't be creatively implemented with the use of 'trickier photography' that fool the viewers of the image into believing that they are seeing something they're not, in order to simulate the effect. I gave a pretty well thought out example on Page 3 of how it could be done with a proper combination of zooming in on the area unaffected by the obstruction+widening or narrowing the camera angle+proper animation to tie the two together+perhaps even a shaded or grainy filter over the out-of-focus obstruction when it settles along the perimeter of the screen. I'm no expert, but am confident that it could be done.

Now I'm not trying to be rude by saying this, but in my opinion, you need to think about this problem from a little further outside of the monitor box.

In real life, I don't think it obscures your vision as much as you may think it does. It would go over your nose and around your eyes, but not over them. The most obstruction you have would be your peripherals, which is a view you don't have in FPS games. Keep in mind that no matter what, it wouldn't work perfectly. Humans have two eyes, but the game has one camera. It'd be imperfect and, quite frankly, just interfere with your gameplay.

And if anyone says "Toggle Option", I'll be very upset :P

It would be cool for all of about six seconds, until you realized that Daedric is a closed face, with tiny little eyeholes. Would get frustrating quickly.

One of the problems with this idea is that it wouldn't actually be realistic. A computer monitor doesn't simulate "first person" from a human perspective, since it cannot really emulate how we see. While we might forgive that most of the time, having the edge of the screen or something be partially obstructed as if we are losing peripheral sight or something wouldn't sit properly because a computer monitor isn't representing the full spectrum of sight as it is!

This idea would sit better if everyone playing were using Radeon's Eyefinity technology because that is a further step in realistic vision, but for one monitor it is grossly over exaggerated and isn't realistic.

Yes. your field of view is far smaller than any helmet used in combat. If you could run this game with 3 monitors it might be an idea but not else.
None of the open helmets in the game would block vision except that you would see the nose protection and perhaps the top

Don't you guys think it would be cool if equipped closed helmets blocked part of your vision when in first person view depending on their design, like in real life?

Hell no. Don't want anything to do with this unless it's optional. (Real option, not "Bethesda-option"- with, y'know, an actual toggle in the game settings)

Options = "Don't like it, don't have to use it" + "play on PC and mod it in/out"
The Bethesda Way?

Hey this is a great idea!
some other things i would like to be included to add to the realism
1. PLEASE let damage count, if we get injured significantly let there be a period of recovery, ex: cuts bruises, instant, broken bones, 1-2 months, death, never, game over (or game restart if your hindu)
2. our character eats, therefore he must poop, why in a world inhabited by, literally, 70...ish people are we not able to find a restroom anywhere? it really breaks immersion
3. Skyrim is cold, we must fight for warmth or face hypothermia, if we wait, or sleep, in frigid area without sufficient warmth the screen just fades to black, never to reemerge, you now have to start a new character as the one you were irresponsible enough to neglect has perish. On the bright side your murder has been observed by forces unknown! :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juMWKWR_BCo It was done fantastically and I would love something like this to be done for helmets in skyrim. Just obstructing enough that you might want to take a helmet off when you enter a city, but not enough to actually be a disadvantage for you in battle.

there comes a point where fun game play must take over for realism, those things you mention yeah they may be fun fro like 1% of the number of people playing it look at the big picture it makes 0 sense fro Beth to do any of that when it will make the game LESS fun for 99% of users
