First Person Helmet Sight Obstruction

Post » Thu Sep 23, 2010 1:10 am

Don't you guys think it would be cool if equipped closed helmets blocked part of your vision when in first person view depending on their design, like in real life?

I think it would add an interesting dynamic to helmets in the game, such that the added cranial defense would come at a cost to visibility. Think about it - how many warriors walked around with helmets on a normal basis in real life? They usually only donned them during battle. So it would be normal to walk around without a helmet, but then just before a hard battle you make sure to put it on to complete your full armor set. Of course more open helmets, such as a skull cap, would have little to no effect on your sight, whereas a fully closed helmet might only leave a slit for you to see out of.

What do you guys think?

Yes you would see less, but why would you walk around wearing a helmet all the time like a goof anyway? Are you one of those "special" kids?

I like it. I never wear helmets because they always look cheesy. This would give me another reason not to wear them!

no more stuff blocking my view=less game
also what about full helms? will we only be able to see out of little holes
A togglable option would be fine but if people really want it then they should just mod, it would be a lot of work and it will hardly be noticed

Sounds like a good idea, until you play for five minutes, take the helmet off, see the difference, and never wear a helmet again.

I want MAYBE to have very very minimal obstruction.

By the way dude, the way you made a large and red letter at the beginning of the paragraph... is just so damn... cool as hell and I am stealing the idea from you for when I make threads. :ninja:

Yeah you would see less. That's why you'd take your helmet off instead of walking around wearing all the time like a goof haha

One of the problems with this idea is that it wouldn't actually be realistic. A computer monitor doesn't simulate "first person" from a human perspective, since it cannot really emulate how we see. While we might forgive that most of the time, having the edge of the screen or something be partially obstructed as if we are losing peripheral sight or something wouldn't sit properly because a computer monitor isn't representing the full spectrum of sight as it is!

This idea would sit better if everyone playing were using Radeon's Eyefinity technology because that is a further step in realistic vision, but for one monitor it is grossly over exaggerated and isn't realistic.

We can't even get full body awareness and you want our freaking helmets blocking our view?! :P

Seriously, I would much prefer this to not be the case. This is one of those times when I draw the line of realism getting in the way of the fun factor.

I play almost excuslively in 3rd person, only switching to 1st to pick up loot for obvious reasons. I also almost never wear a helmet. I spend a lot of time on my characters looks, I'd like to see that hard work while I play. So I'm going to vote "Don't care either way".

what about in combat your view would be so limited you wouldn't be able to see what the person is doing

I used a mod that did this for Oblivion. Full helmets, you could see out of the eye holes, and then a litte bit in between them, other helmets, you could only see what you would see in real life while wearing that helmet.

VERY realistic. Even MORE undesirable.

Keep this out, let someone mod it in, and then the 10 people who like this feature can be happy.

Ah good idea, forgot about people who care not. Added that option in

Also, i just realized that when talking to an NPC, their disposition should drop a bit if you talk to them while wearing a helmet (and you're not in a combat situation). Wouldn't you be weirded out if some dude came up to you in a helmet? It removes a personal element of conversation

You gotta draw the line between realism and fun gameplay somehwere, and this is where I draw it.

imo thats a bad idea but to each his own. I wouldn't mind as long as it was optional and if it was always on i would have to play 3rd person so i don't get any sight limitations .....

its not just that this would not be fun it would also be taxing to create a new HUD for every helmet

I don't think that would be an issue. If the HUD is minimal already, why not just keep it there in the corner? Or maybe get rid of it altogether

Pretty interesting idea. Not sure how this would turn out though. Blockage would be bad, and I think the added realism may be miniscue at best.
