First person realism - see your body, foggy breath, etc

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:39 pm

The purpose of this topic is to discuss the level of realism you would like to see in the first person perspective. I think most people would like to be able to see their body, but what about even more realistic things like breath and helmet shadow?

Now I know some of my topics have been been on the controversial side lately, but this should be a nice tame one which most of us can agree on and discuss in a civilized manner. (Many of you will be pleased to know that I ended up being suspended as a result of my last couple topics)

Yes to all three. If you're creating what hopes to be a living, breathing world - why would your window into that be an oblivion-style flying camera with arms? People don't not have legs, people can't see through their helmets (Though for that one, getting the overlay right is hard), and people aren't unaffected by the local environment. Breath should freeze under very cold conditions, with water breathing there should be bubbles while underwater, so on. They're small touches, but they go a long way towards creating a character, not a viewpoint.

There should be another option in the questions.

"I don′t really mind"

This is not important for me.

Seeing your own body? of course, it's there, you should be able to see it. The other two things though... in theory they add realism, but at the cost of an intrusion in your sight, think about it, when you whear glasses (medical prescription ones, work or laboratory protenction ones, or sunglasses) and something soil it. You can see perfectly but it's really anoying and you can even end up nauseated. The breath thing in 3dp person though, would be OK.

I like the breath idea, but the helmet outline is kinda stupid. And if they were to do the breath thing, it should only be in the colder places and after standing still for a couple of seconds.

yes, yes, and no. Viewing yourself, your arms, your breath, even your shadow in first person really does add a lot to the realism, however, if the helm blocked your vision, odds are I'd find it so annoying that I'd simply never wear helmets at all.

I voted no on legs, (because seeing your legs almost always changes the laws of physics in the game to accomodate) and yes on breath and helmet.

I would like to say though, that you wouldn't see your breath if you were running fast, but would in most other activities. The helmet outline is a good idea, but should probably be kept to a hard core mode to add a bit of claustrophobia and impaired field of view. Would be a nice touch.

Wait, why is everybody saying no to an outline of a helmet in the edge of the screen, while saying yes to visible breath, that will always obscure your vision somewhat in winter areas?

Take a moment with me here OP, and cooperate please. In real life, look down at the ground. (standing might be a good idea first)

(using your head). What all can you see within your vision field?

I can see almost everything, including my shoulders.

I don't want to look down and only be able to see my legs. It's like having your head glued to your crotch, its absolutely silly.

If I can see anything, I want to be able to see everything. That would be cool.

1) As I've mentioned in other threads, I really don't see what's so special about this "full body awareness" craze. So....

2) No. Seems annoying.

3) Oh, heck NO! :banghead:

I found some leaked dev screenshots of the third option ingame, so I can confirm it's in and unmoddable.

That's a really easy photoshop. But thanks for the example of why it's a terrible feature. :)

Visible legs, yes. I don't think this is really even something to worry about. It's in just about every first-person game these days, it's par for the course.

Foggy breath, only in situations of intense cold and snow. If I'm in the autumn-looking forest as seen in the screenshot with the deer, I shouldn't see my breath then. Otherwise, I'll go with yes on that too. I'd also like to add that it should be rather non-intrusive and a very small see-through type of thing.

Seeing the outline of a helmet, absolutely not. I've seen games that attempted something like that before and it was just awful and it got in the way and in general it made it a very unpleasant experience. This is one of those situations where I think realism needs to take a hit for the sake of gameplay.

This.

How is that not awesome? It truly feels like you're staring out from a helmet!

Big yes to see body and legs. Would really enhance the experience of 1st person.
Big yes to see breath. A nice touch which would definitely fit for Skyrim. We know breathing is for 3rd person, so why not 1st person as well.
Big no to see helmet. Doesn't add any immersion or better feeling of 1st person imo, just makes the viewable screen smaller. And I think it's ugly...

You should be able to see your body and legs in an FPS all the time. So, yes for body and legs. Yes for foggy breath because in some place very cold you should be able to see your foggy breath. For the helmet one I am on and off about that one. I would like it because I would have a reason to take off the helmet when walking around so I can see things better but no because sometimes it's sometime frustrating to see an enemy depending on size.
