First Person Viewable Body

Yes! I am tired of looking down and seeing that my feet are missing, or that my hand is not attached to anything.

If Halo can show your body and feet, I think TES can do it.

if you think that the slight obstruction of your view when you look DOWN is a problem, you have some issues. It

Right I suppose people not agreeing with you priorities on the game aesthetics might be a sign of "issues" that's a reasonable attitude to take....

or maybe Bethesda RPGs have a habit of hiding really cool items in places (like between a bed and the wall) with such dedication that many of us who have played enough of their games now feel if we can't see the floor (or straight down that tiny crack between a piece of furniture and the wall) we may have just missed a really cool weapon or strange note. This is not unreasonable on the gamers part however - because they do have a habit of hiding useful and sometimes very important items in those tiny cracks. At this stage in development adding in a visible body in 1st person would probably cause a lot of frustration since much of the game design has been finished so a lot of those items are hidden. I think people are just worried that if you got your way they'd appreciate the cool immersion for all of about 5 seconds before they start wanting to stab some quest NPC in the face because they can't find the note he left somewhere in his room. The fact that Bethesda programmers and level designers happen to all be leprechauns and therefore magically adept at hiding stuff in strange places is part of the fun of some of their quests but it is why I imagine all my characters in every game after Daggerfall had to have a permanently bent neck by the end of the game.

But yeah having your body in 1st person (when appropriate and in an uninstrusive way) would help with immersion particularly in scripted events and boss battles where you might be flung about. True mirrored surfaces might also be cool too- if the character animations are significantly improved.

Arx Fatalis did this (viewable legs), and it worked well.

*The game also has a very believable FPP jump animation.

As long as they have 3rd person animations in 1st person I will be happy.

I would like it if they did something like Halo (2, 3 and Reach) where you can see your legs when you look down.

The way the most recent (public) engine is set up, the arms are separate from the body, and the body is hidden in First Person view.

Emphatic yes on first person body (good both for acrobatics and for adding a little drama when critters knock you down -- also means you don't have to kick out to 3rd person camera when you sit in a chair or get knocked down, which is annoying).

No on helmet view -- your brain filters obstructions out for the most part (you don't notice your nose unless you explicitly mean to look at it, for example), and your FOV is already unnaturally limited in games relative to human capability. Muffling hearing could be good though. It would be nice if combat music didn't play until your character detected an attack, so you'd have muffled sound and also be more likely to get ambushed.

I dont want to see my helmet that would be way too distracting, but I really want to see my legs, and depending on how they implement it the body. I really hate it when I look down in fpp games and see nothing and I'm just floating arms, it really kills immersion for me, but that's cuz it's my gaming pet peeve.

I would want this implemented. It does not have to be perfectly animated like if your character is on a set of stairs and each foot is actually placed properly on each step.

Should be like Mirrors Edge. I wouldn't care if they had animations for opening doors, picking things up and such. If those looked bad I would rather they didn't have them.

Also, the helmet view would be cool, but have it optional definitely.

Nothing more obtrusive than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtP4rkJBky4 Oblivion mod. I hate, HATE, mods that add "immersive" first person animations where my only hint at what weapon I'm holding is seeing a flash of it when I swing it.

I'd like to see my legs and chest, but I'd think a helmet view would svck a whole lot.

My question is, would it really improve gameplay? And if so, how much?

I've never played Mirror's Edge, but judging by the videos it seems very well done. I'm certainly in favor of having a similar first person view in Skyrim, although to keep everybody happy, perhaps it should be an option that can be easily enabled/disabled.

It'll probably make it worse. Bethesda have a polygon budget to juggle while developing the game, having something as useless as your body in FP view will take a chunk out of that budget, a chuck that could be used to help increase the framerate on consoles or further the distance LOD. For the record I like this idea, but it's on the backburner for the list of things I want for Skyrim.

I was just about to mention ME. It really does feel immersive to have your body visible at the right angles and your arms visible when you use them, and also to have the camera to have an (ever so) slight wobble as you run, making it feel like you are really stepping. Not too much though or it'd make you sick.

After reading through some more posts, I'm beginning to see the light. Having never played Mirror's Edge, maybe I'm missing out on how this could help the immersion factor. I still feel that they need to leave my already narrow field of view alone, and leave the helmet vision stuff out, but maybe this full body awareness is not such a bad thing. I say sure, as long as it doesn't kill the frame rate or level of detail for standard game content.

I think I read somewhere that the FoV is a mutable ini setting.
