First Person Viewable Body

Post » Wed Dec 16, 2009 3:55 pm

Not something that concerns me so I have no opinion......

Well, I get why some people want it, but I just don't care if I see my body or not. (Ok, I did have an opinion.)

I'm easy either way basically.

It would be awesome if it were like aliens vs predator or f.e.a.r. Where when you look down you see your body.

It would help make the game more immersive for me and should not be that hard for the devs to implement.

Hell they could even give the option to turn it on/off in the options menu

I would love it. Especially with real head-bob this time. That's the best a dev can do against my tendency to get sea sick. Also the first thing I do in a game with an FP perspective, check whether I can see my legs. ^_^

Well... the thing about helmet view is, it never really looks anything other than cheesy in games like this. Keep in mind that unless you do have a video headset, you're ALWAYS going to be looking at your helmet as a pasted-on shape on a flat screen. If they do it so that it completely obstructs portions of your vision then that won't make much sense - most helmets have their bits in your peripheral vision, where they aren't going to obstruct it most any of the time. But then, if they do what a lot of developers do and make it transparent, it'll just look... well, stupid and cheap. Either way, it doesn't really work to improve immersion - at best, it just needlessly obstructs your view of the game.

EDIT: That said, I'd be surprised if you can't see something when you look down. This was one of the features I saw people asking for the most leading up to Oblivion, and there were quite a few requests for it with Fallout 3 as well. It's something people have been hounding Bethesda to do for a long time, and they have no real reason not to.

You make valid points, especially when concerning the video headset, however, the main pull of those are complete isolation, which all in all would be improved by helmet cam.

As for you comment about helmets looking bad, IMO in both Halo and Bioshock 2 they are VERY well done.

But still, if added allow an option to disable it ala Bioshock 2.

I haven't seen it in any of the Halos so I can't speak. It's probably in one of the ones I haven't played. As for Bioshock 2... that's actually a pretty firm example of exactly what I meant, from what I can tell. Having a black circle around your field of vision doesn't look like a helmet. It looks... silly, and obtrusive.

But how often do you really look down at your own feet?

After the first "Oh hey, that's cool", why would you want to? To look at your greaves/boots? I'd rather go 3rd person for that. (But that's me.)

I'm just curious why there is such a demand for it.

Yes I would like to be able to see my character if I look down to the ground and not a flying camera with two hands, but I don't want the helmets to obscure the vision.
Its cool and all but it won't work in a game like TES properly...

T'was cool in Star Wars Republic Commando though

Often enough, honestly. If I'm playing a game in first person, I'm going to be looking around in just about every direction. Sometimes I'll look down just to admire the scenery (not in Bethesda games - the ground textures aren't really something to be admired in those - but in general). Kind of jarring when you do that and suddenly realize that you're not just a pair of floating hands, but that your floating hands are hovering precisely where your legs should be.

I'm just curious why there is such a demand for it.

Because it's not an especially difficult feature to implement and there's no particularly good reason to exclude it.

I personally dont think they need to change anything viewpoint wise, all has worked for me and will continue too if they dont change it. IMO

But they're not in the way in Left 4 Dead, Thief 3, Mirror's Edge, Halo, or most anything else that does it. One game doing it badly doesn't make it a bad feature.

I guess my field of view is at about a 45 degree angle so I never see where my feet would be anyway.

It just doesn't add enough to be worth the time, in my opinion.

I am not against it to be clear. I could just think of other things I'd rather they spend their time on. If all is good with the schedule, and there is time, go nuts.

The only time where it bothers me not being able to see my body is when i'm sitting down in a chair or something and I look down to see... nothing.

So if we can only see our bodies when we're sitting that would be enough for me.

So I dont know what im missing and dotn wanna risk it being implemented poorly. Rather just have the normal view of ghost legs. /shrug not that big a deal to me.

I see your point, but I'd probably get annoyed if my view kept getting obstructed - especially if it were my limbs blocking the view! And I'd never wear a helmet if that were the case either - I wear glasses IRL and being aware of the frame is annoying enough for me :P

See, I played with a mod like this for Oblivion, and it was nice, because I had my helmet hot-keyed, and I'd only wear it while in dangerous places, and I find it wasn't annoying at all, and made me feel more like I was suited up and ready for action! :flamethrower:

You're kind of missing the point. it doesn't really take extra time to implement something like this - if their third-person models and animations are actually good, there's no trouble using them in first person. It's mostly just a matter of deciding where to set the camera and which parts of the model not to display in first person. If they leave the body out they're going to need to do at least that much, so it's not an added effort at all.

I don't want helmets to obstruct vision, but the PC's body should be visible in first person. First person perspective should be about seeing through the character's eyes. When you look down, you see your body through your own eyes. I would also like to see my character's shadow in first person. I always find it immersion breaking when I play in first person, and can't quite ignore the fact that my character is just a disembodied floating camera with a pair of arms attached. It's hard to identify with a pair of floating arms. I often end up playing in third person for this reason alone, so I feel like my character actually has some physical presence and is a part of the world.

Am I? My point is it's not a necessity and not really important. Sure it helps immersion, but really, what else does it do for you? And again, seriously, how often do you (or most people) look straight down? Is the current system reeeeallly that bad?

It just seems trivial to (for) me (in my game) and not worth the effort. If the effort is minimal, as mentioned before, go nuts. It's just something that would appear right near the bottom of my "to do list" if I were in charge. (Probably happy I'm not huh? :P)
