First PersonThird Person Poll

Don't you ever look down?

Do you have any examples of open-world games doing it in vanilla, though? I'm just curious.

Likely mostly first person as usual, besides going into third person when I'm in the mood while wandering peacefully or looking at the character.

You can play Mirror's Edge in third person, but the animation quality is pretty bad... because it was only there to cast shadows.

I don't recall if the legs were very low-poly count, but I bet they were. Hands/forearms and feet were all I really remember seeing.

**Half Life gives an example of a game with no feet, and no check underfoot. If it had legs, they'd be floating in the air off the edge.

FO3 plays fine in FPP or TPP, so I don't think it's a cost savings issue there... but it must still save resources for not rendering them in FPP.

Sure. Doesn't mean that I picture my character as a floating camera & arms, just because it doesn't draw in the legs.

Eh, whatever. Maybe I'm just used to it due to playing FPS's since the aaaaaaaancient days of the early 90's.

Honestly, I don't know that many games that do it, it seems pretty rare. But I know from people bragging that ARMA has "full body awareness" or whatever the marketing-speak is. And those games are pretty large world maps, aren't they?

I switch constantly, to the point where I've had people watching say I make them dizzy. Mainly though I aim in first and like to travel in third.

How do you rationalize the complete absence of legs then?

And I've played hundreds of FPS games without legs, but it still amuses me every time I start one and immediately look down to see I have no legs.

I tend to use FPP only indoors ~where it's all but impossible to use TPP [aside from the 'over-shoulder' type].

Yeah indoors I mainly use first as well. Skyrim's third person was a bit better but still certain angles make it a bit harder to see indoors.

Mostly third but 1st for close examination and long sniper shots for me. I love that both are included. As I mentioned on the Elder Scrolls board, my fairly large family is evenly divided on the issue so we can all enjoy Fallout.

Honestly, until people started making such a big deal about it (similar topics popped up on the Skyrim forum), I never even thought about it. Game like the old Duke Nukem that had mirrors in it... you wander past the mirror, there's your whole character. (Or seeing across two portals in Portal, for instance). But even in games without that - I know there's a character, I don't need to stare at my feet to know that Gordon Freeman, or the Doom Marine, or Kyle Katarn, or the Lone Wanderer, exist.

Never use it to play. I dig the FPP. I mostly use VATS, so it's not a combat preference, rather I just feel more mobile in that perspective when I am moving about.

I like to use both, but generally stick to first person for playing, mainly because in most Bethseda games third person isn't exactly "fun" to use in third person because of the mechanics/animations and things.

I don't rationalize it at all. I simply move it aside so that it doesn't occupy any of my thought processes.

This for me also, which is why I was pleased to see a poll option to accommodate that.

3rd person when over weight, so I can see what's coming. 1st person everything thing else.

Are you trying to tell me you have control over your thoughts and acting on them or something?

First Person, I don't dislike 3rd but I want to maximise the immersion (at least on the first play through).

It is a discipline. You make yourself learn the game, and then you keep your mind on the game. You don't have to rationalize missing feet, because you know your feet aren't missing. You don't have to rationalize being mute, because you know you aren't mute. :)

I'm just happy the game isn't going to be forced 3rd person.

I use both to some degree. I tend to use 1st person inside buildings and 3rd person for wandering around outside. A bit of both when it comes to combat, depending on the weapon I'm using.
