First playthrough

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 11:32 am

I got the game on release day and didnt ever really get into it, so im going to try it again today.
One question before i start though, whats a fun build to play for a first playthrough.

Every character i made on FO3 was a Small guns type of person. But if thats whats best to play for a first playthrough i have no problem with that, since im so used to them.

You cant go with no mistake using small guns theres a wide array of weapons in FNV. You could focus on Guns,Speech, and Survival(maybe?)(since its new).

Speech seems more useful than in F3. Lockpick and small guns are good safe bets. Repair may not seem as important in the early stages, but when you get Jury Rigging it will be a revelation.

It's good to stick with one combat class. Tag lockpick, Speech and a combat skill, (Guns is the best, imo)

This special is the the one that works very well.

Str. 7
Per. 4
End. 5
Cha. 5
Int. 9
Agl. 5.
Luck. 5

The key is getting to the New Vegas medical clinic and getting the Int implant to get 10 Int. Also, get the educated perk when you can.

The stat boost from Int is a much better value.

Hehe, you'll probably get a couple hundred different suggestions on what is a 'best' build, what stats are key, what perks to take, etc. For a standard fun guns build, i would use:

Str. 5 (implant will make it 6, which is plenty for most all guns- if you want to be able to use the really heavy stuff, you can get Weapon Handler perk which lowers all their STR requirements by 2 points)

Per. 6 (need 6 in this one to qualify for the Better Criticals perk, which is one of the best in the game for most classes, especially guns... also for the Sniper perk, if so inclined. Most hats will add a point, plus implant makes it 8 total)

End. 6 (I put 6 in here, just so I can buy 6 implants- i don't bother buying an implant for END itself... unless you are a melee char, high health just isn't that important)

Cha. 1 (would be 0, but they force you to keep 1 point in it- higher CHR does boost your companion's damage quite a bit, but if you are any kind of a badass yourself, that's not much of a priority. Implant makes it 2)

Int. 7 (implant makes 8, and I usually burn an Intense Training perk early on to make it 9- in the long run that'll give you all but maybe 15 of the hundreds of possible skillup points you can get by 30)

Agl. 7 (need minimum of 6 if you want to get Sniper perk, which I like personally- it adds 20% chance to hit for all VATS headshots with both 1H and 2H weaps. Implant makes it 8, a nice AGL number for a guns build)

Luck. 8 (need minimum of 6 for Better Criticals perk; luck increases your crit%, and has a lot of beneficial effects on other stats and most everything you do in the game, one way or another. Implant makes it 9)

[Correction:]
Don't forget, a primary stat point added to ENDURANCE via implants will NOT allow you to get another implant... only the END points you start out with, or add via Intense Training perk(s) will.

PS: Thank you for bringing that to my attention, Azula, even if your venomous, foul, and offensively juvenile manner of berating me via secret mail was completely uncalled for...

Bleh, do a female Energy Weapons specialist who teams up with the Legion.

S 6
P 1
E 1
C 1
I 1
A 1
L 10

19 skill points left to spend on whatever crap stat you want to.

Agility is useless unless you use VATS (Which I don't see the appeal to) and Perception is even worse.
Other than a few perk requirements both those stats can [censored] right off in my opinion.

Luck is important for EW.
And Strength 6 with the perk later on so you can wield all weapons.

Those are the only two important stats.
Charisma is useless.
Inteligent is useless if you have HH and DM.
Agility is useless unless you use VATS.
Charisma is "okay" if you use companions on hardcoe Mode.
Perception is the most useless one.
And Endurance? Why would you need Endurance? You'll get so overpowered that the loss of health from the stat won't even matter.

So the only stats to focus on is STR6 and Luck for EW.
For Guns?
Agility 7 for some perks?
PER 6 for some perks?
Honestly none of the stats are very necessary IMO.

use the special perk to raise it as the game goes on. Your guns skill won t match your agility, and 1 in luck will lower critical chances a lot.

Strongly disagree.

9 Int vs. 5 int is only 2 extra stat points per level. 9 agility vs. 5 agility is a huge difference in reloading speed/firing speed.

If you want my opinion...

STR - Fairly important due to the STR requirement of weapons for optimal performance. Go with 3 if you plan on getting the STR implant (+1 STR) and the weapons handling perk (-2 STR requirement for all weapons) and don't want to use anything but the most basic firearms, go with 5 if you plan on the implant and perk and want to be able to use most weapons, go with at least 7 STR if you want to be able to use the heavy-duty weapons too.

Perception - Honestly, it's damn useless in Vegas. Just take ED-E with you (greatly amplifies your perception) and level your sneak and there's almost no need for Perception.

Endurance - Governs your HP and how many implants you're allowed to buy (9 total available, 1 for each SPECIAL stat, one for extra defense and one for HP regen) and your chance to resist poison attacks. I love endurance, though others look down on it.

Charisma - Governs how strong your followers are. With 1 Charisma, your followers will drop dead in seconds. With 10 charisma, they're absolutely deadly.

Intelligence- A lot of people call this the most important stat, I disagree strongly. 2 INT = one extra stat point per level. ONE. While the difference between 1 Endurance and 10 Endurance is 180 HP points, the difference between 1 INT and 10 INT is 4.5 extra stat points per level. Just get at least 4 INT so you can get the INT perks like Comprehension and Educated and you'll be fine.

Agility - Determines reload speed and for some weapons, firing speed (usually for lever-action weapons). Leave it at 5 at least to get a perk that vastly increases reload speed.

Luck - Determines your crit rate and your success in the casinos. Most important for players that wanna be rich and use energy weapons, less important for people that want to snipe while in sneak mode or don't care about money.

Honestly guns or energy weapons are both fun and easy to use in game.
Melee / unarmed is very fun and my favourite style so far.. but for the first time it's not that great an idea.

Try low intelligence at least once, and a speech, barter, science run once as well.

Yep, and as soon as you have scraqed up 4,000 caps, you can go buy your first one. It's quite an adventure getting from the Primm or Mojave Outpost zones, all the way through to Vegas without getting killed, when you are only level 4 or 5. Easy once you know the route and the hazards, but a lot more exciting the first time through :-)

I went right off good springs cemetary at level 7 my first play through to get to Vegas. I died many time, but I made it to vault 19 where I died several more times, and didnt have enough explosive skill or equip to fix the problem like I wanted to.

It was all great fun. Who needs novac or the 188 trading post? lol looked like a colossal waste of time to me. I went to those places way after Vegas.

No I saw them I just don t care if I die 14 times to do something. I m an old school gamer. Back when men were men and dieing 15 times was nothing, because in all reality it is nothing. Im glad I didn t take that long boaring road around. I ended up finding a way to a certain power armoured group way before I should have because of it too.

Much better than sleep walking down through novac and the 188 way. zzz zzz zzz

I had my own agenda in fo3 and fo nv. Finding pre war info. Though there is really never any substantial info out there any history lesson is what I am really after. Storyline comes second. Especially "I got shot in the head in an rpg" lol
