A first-time Daggerfallian

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:12 pm

Hail.

Let me start by saying I played Arena *a lot*, and Oblivion to some extent (till my comp could not handle the req's).

Well, I've always wanted to try Daggerfall, but back in 95 it was more like 'Buggerfall', and I developed this fobia.... That I hope I've overcome.

I have questions:

1) AFAIK, race matters little here. In Arena, Redguards 'supposedly' added level/3 to hit and damage to any melee, etc... In Daggerfall, they are more cosmetic, except for High Elf paralysis immunity, Breton magic (not SPELL) resistance, etc... Right?

2) Damage-wise, I cannot quite grasp Critical Stirke and Backstab by their descriptions. CS should be x3 damage of any weapon... How is it here? Also, how does BS work (ie, I know u cannot BS with Archery, but can u with short/long blade, blunt, h2h?) , and do these add to each other?

3) Dodge reduces chance to be hit, does anyone know how this works? Does wear no armour grant any benefit than leather ? Also Stealth, does wearing armour make it harder to use the skill?

4) Enchanting Items : Do I need to be proficient in magic schools

5) SOme artifacts sound cool. The way i remneber the Ebony Blade, you'd strike someone and part of damage will heal u - but it would not deteriorate item health. Is it still so, or when I strike (like Arena's Volendrung), in 10-20 strikes it is gone? Likewise Mehrune Razor, Does it disappear easy (by the description it seems so).

I think that's ok for now...
THX!

EDIT: I remember very early there was a bug or exploit, where using h2h and elemental damage touch spells (or gloves?), if u got a critical strike / backstab you'd get the total damage multiplied... Is this still on?

EDIT 2: I read somewhere that there are still some bugs, like when u enchant a weapon Potent vs, it practically is a waste. Can u tell me if in character generation the Bonus to Hit enemies is working? Or rather, is something NOT working at all? THX!

1. Race is entirely cosmetic save High Elves' immunity to paralysis, Breton resistance to magic, that is to say the particular type of spell damage called magic, and Nord resistance to frost damage.

2. I don't know the particular damage multipliers that go into these, but you actually ~can~ backstab with bows, through doors too, it's really quite powerful.

3. Again not sure on the calculations regarding Dodge, but armor use does not modify stealth at all, plate or leather or unarmored it's all the same to Daggerfall.

4. In a roundabout way, I believe so, to my knowledge and that is fairly limited as I have yet to do any of this or look into it much, enchanting is done at the Item Maker which is a service for high ranking Temple of Julianos members and Mages Guild members, and I think the former has some magic skills in their reqs and I know the latter does.

5. Not sure...

On edit one, I don't know, on edit two, I believe Potent Vs. is broken, but Bonus to Hit works.

Thx for the quick answer - so, if I have NO magic ability at all, I cannot enchant at all?

Also, I am having some difficulty using the mouse when it comes to look up/down. I can swing weapon with right-mouse (M 2), but have no idea how to look up/down moving mouse.

EDIT: I noticed my Long Blade skill (Major) has AGI written to its right, as if the governing att were Agility... this must be wrong, right? It should read STR....

Technically, you don't need magic ability to enchant, but you need it to raise in ranks sufficiently for the service to be available. Catch is, that a) it doesn't matter which skill you use, so being proficient in Restoration and so-so in Illusion is as good as being proficient in Destruction and so-so in Alteration, for example. And, b ) since enchanting is also available through Temple of Julianos, by being a member of this cult you can get the service by training Lockpicking and Short Blade alone and no magic skills whatsoever.

UPD: Since Julianos also has an item merchant, this cult is a nice alternative for the Mages Guild to a totally magic-less character in general. Of course, you preferably need a kingdom where it is dominant as your base of operations, and none of "main quest" kingdoms - Daggerfall, Wayrest or Sentinel - are such.

Also, I am having some difficulty using the mouse when it comes to look up/down. I can swing weapon with right-mouse (M 2), but have no idea how to look up/down moving mouse.
Set Mouselook in controls.

thx, just read ur other post.

I know there r 2 options for 'viewing', but choosing the mouslook (which makes ur center 'target cross' disappear) still does not allow me to look up and down with mouse. So far, no porblem (I use pge up / down).

EDIT: btw, is there any known safe container in DF? or is that what the wagon / cart is for?

EDIT 2 : Almost forgot - skills and attributes >100... Is it ppossible and if so, does it do any good? I assume the Oghma Infinium cannot be used to make attribute go beyond 100...

Let's see... I'm not sure about the default controls, but I *think* you look up and down with PG UP, PG DN, and center your view with HOME.
Also, I believe that if you hold "Alt" while moving the mouse, that will move your view.

Or you can change the controls to "Mouse look" in the options, so that where you move the mouse is where you look by default.

Then there's something weird with your mouse settings either in DOSBOX or in Daggerfall itself. Normally mouselook allows for turning your face vertically as mush as horizontally.

No, there are no safe containers. If you buy a house or a ship, though, you can pile your stuff on the ground there (in ship's case - only inside, not on the outer deck).

Only if you http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hacking_FALL.EXE. Although I accidentally got one of my stats to 106 when I leveled up a stat that was spell-buffed to 100, but that's rather a curious bug and will probably be just temporary when I'll take the item off.

No thanks, I dont wanna hack any exe or other files... I just wanted to have a better notion of 'limits'.

So, anyone knows how these % work? whats the difference between Critical Strike / Sneak 83% and 100%? I know when ANY major or primary skill hits 100%, you stop levelling (I actually like this), but BEFORE any reach 100, u can take the others to 99%, yesn't?

btw... any means of knowing ranks within certain guilds?

Yeah, just click on "Affiliations" on the character page.

Actually, one important piece of info is not under affiliations: Reputations value!

How do I know how much I have? I am currently ranked Magician in Mages Guild, have the skill requirements and it has been over 28 days since my last promotion... I'd like to know whats missing to advance to Item Making rank! :)

EDIT: Argh! Nevermind - by some mysterious reason, I just went to talk to some lady in the guild, and got the news that I am now Enchanter or whatever it is that allows me to MAKE ITEMS! :chaos: For the first time ever!

They all provide similar benefits, but you only get free rooms at inns inside their respective provinces at lower ranks.

thx Seti18 .

About enchantments, some item has an Enchant Point of 900. If i choose enchantments that give me 500/900, does it mean the item will get used/worn more slowly than enchanting to the full 900/900?

(I also already have 2 items with Repair ability).

EDIT: Also, the Soul Bound tabel in this link http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Enchantment_Power seems flawed - I know Vampire Ancients Soul has disadvantages and this one does not list them. I am curious about Dragonling, does it have advantages and/or disadvantages (I know it is only the one found in Knights quests)?

Buggerfall

I have nothing useful to add; I just felt I couldn't let the thread pass by without lamplighting this highly amusing and evocative psuedonym.

Amusing and evocative if you're British, anyhow.

Well, I called it that due to the sheer amount of bugs back then, which apparently reached half the size of UK.

I do not know what else 'buggerfall' might mean, I'm from Brazil.

Hahaha, "bugger" is an insulting appellation.

Oh, I did not mean it, but then I went from Paradise to the Nine Circles of Hell with Arena to the Daggerfall of that time.

How much did I pay for that? $ 60 i guess (and as an imported game in Brazil... I suffered).
