My first two hours

Post » Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:41 am

(tis is gonna be long. so read it or skip it. just dun b*tch bout its length)

got mine in the mail today n after playing for 2 hours, i still can't tell you if it's any good. i may have plagiarized dat last line btw.

but seriously, here's the breakdown...all cons.

0. Cool pre-opening scene explaining the Ark but too damn short.

1. Opening cutscene's dialog dialog didnt sync up with the lips.

2. Character customization looks cool but
a) the menu was laggy or too fast coz i was toggling the options even after i stopped moving the stick.
b) character bobbing around got annoying because i had to wait for the head to turn right to see what changes has occured e.g. stubble and
c) refresh rate after choosing a jacket style, hair style or etc. was ridiculously slow (i'm on a 9Mbit connection so I know it's not my connection)

3. Chose the Security Forces instead of the Resistance and I get this super short cutscene of 5 guys in a train going somewhere to rescue this hostage
and when you combine this with the already short opening scene that explained how the Ark came about, it didn't feel like I'm playing a single player
campaign. I mean, where's the exposition? the setup?

4. So i get to play at last. N wat do I see? Horrible God awful textures still loading all around me. I waited for it to fully load but it never did! Then I started
running but it felt like walking. Then i tried S.M.A.R.T.-ing n i didnt feel smart at all. I was moving like a T-100 when I thought the goal was to move like Altair.
Lag again? I dunno.

5. The HUD is a mess. too many things happening at the same time. I miss Call of Cthulhu.

6. I thought securing a forward checkpoint would make me spawn further up the map but I keep spawning at the base and you combine that wit the "smooth" "running"
n it becomes a pain to re-engage.

7. I dun know if i killed anyone bcoz it's hard to see the kill notification with all the things going on the screen.

8. i've played the same first mission and failed over and over during my first two hours and i think this is why a lot ppl are frustrated. this is normal in a multiplayer
game that is stacked. but when this happens in what suppose to be a single player and you're prevented from moving forward with the story it does get really, really
annoying considering how you need to work with your human teammates to succeed. i was the only one who had a mic and we're on Live for crying out loud.
Brink shud have had mic as a requirement.

9. Shooting is so not satisfying...for now. i'll have to wait n see what the upgraded weapons will do because I want to feel like i'm hurting ppl but this just feels like shooting
those targets at the shooting range until they tip over.

All in all, i'm still undecided bcoz i can't even move forward in the storyline after two hours of playing because no one was reviving on my team or they're just too dumb and just
rush into a choke point. wait, are they human players or AI? I dun even know and more importantly, i'm starting to not care.

Brink made me appreciate BC2 which I havent been playing for a while. Talk about simpler mechanics that is just so satisying in its presentation, delivery and execution the first time around.

Looking forward to returning this for L.A. Noire if things don't pick up.

p/s: Guess the ladies got all worked up for nothing

2 hours is not long enough to get into it in my opinion, others that have not like it at first after putting some real time in to it have changed their minds.

i realize that and that is why I started this thread so that i can post how i feel as i progressed in the game.

Just played another two hours and what a difference.

They should have had Terminal as the opening level.

Finally enjoyed playing during the escort the security bot level. Gameplay is a lot smoother but still can't see SMART in full action...yet. will try light body after this.

the turret was satisfying at least. mowing down waves of resistance was fun.

i guess this game will grow on you? we'll see.

the chatting among the characters between loading levels to move the story forward is cool but it reminds me of how annoying Assassin's Creed got when they cut to the long winded dialog everytime he kills the main baddie. I miss Half-Life 2's story telling.

Coz including a walkthrough with a break from action would have allowed us to take in the environment instead of blazing through it. Is that why the texture is crappy?

Ok, just coming from another quick 2 hour play and playing the light body type hasn't improved my S.M.A.R.T. experience one bit. It just feels clunky.

Texture still looks bad. But gameplay was smooth finally because there was only 2 human players on my team and the opposing team.

Why was there no effort made to distinguish the human players and the AI in the game? Coz it would be easier to trail someone instead of trying to look for their name among all the stuff dats going on the screen.

Playing Engineer, and I'm annoyed by the turret placement mechanic. I have to search for the right spot to put one up when i'm in the middle of a firefight because it's usually impossible to find the sweet spot.

Why can't I just drop the turret anywhere i like and if its over the edge, just let it drop and break.

And what's with the Press and Hold X Button to carry out any action? it wouldn't be half as bad if the game recognized my input the first time around. I have to mash the X button to activate it.

And the AI models are usually standing still as I empty my clip before reacting. The levels are either suddenly too easy or too hard.

And the characters are starting to sound like a bunch of school girls during the loading screen.
