Fixing the abomb bug confirmed

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 3:11 am

Just read the article and i believe on page five it mentions that the dev team test its scenarios to the 500hour mark which coincidently is the exact time the abomb bug starts

Edit: lightcrux found the article thankfully so i guess i can give an example of abomb glitching

Considering they fixed that bug with the 1.2 patch and it didn't show up in FO3, why is this even a concern?

What is the A-Bomb glitch?

Some kind of mass NPC death-pact?

Oh good, this means everyone that's concerned about TES turning into Fallout doesn't have to worry anymore.

only gamebreaking things that have ever happened to me, was i couldn't complete the mages guild in OB my first play-through, and in Xbox Morrowind, i dropped the dwemer flying boots (i think somewhere in the ocean), but i could always take the back-door route for the main quest with morrowind.

I guess this 500 hour thing is good for players who play the same character a really long time though, I'm sure there was more than just the A-bomb glitch.

Seeing as the engine took a massive technical and graphical leap I'm worried about bigger more effective bugs in a relatively new engine , rather than old pains :o

Yea they said they plugged in a bunch of scenarios to the 500 hour mark checking for bugs. Anyone remember Pete's tweet from a while back that said the successfully tested all the cells?

Quoting from the http://www.nowgamer.com/features/1316/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-bethesda-interview?o=3#listing:

NG: On playtesting and fixing bugs from Oblivion

Todd Howard: We can never guarantee someone won’t get in a situation where there’s the odd problem. I think being on these platforms for as long as we have means we have a much better handle on them, but it’s still a game that some people will play for 500 hours and that becomes a testing nightmare for us. Even if we play it for 500 hours, we’re not positive what someone else does. We’re getting much better at it and learning from those experiences and acknowledging there are things we need to test for.

There’s actually a bug in Oblivion where there’s this one door that has an animation timer and depending on when you open it if you then play for 500 hours that door will no longer open and that breaks the game. How do you plan for that? We found the best way is to test for things, though, so we try and take every variable and let it run for 500 hours.

There's the source.

Every game has bugs and some people do some weird things that reveal one. I for one have never ran into a bug in any TES game except Morrowind and the few I did in Morrowind weren't game breaking. I've seen other people I know in real life have a bug or two (clavicus Vile turn in bug, which I never had because I'm not giving up Umbra  and one where my friend stole the third volume of the Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes and glitched the quest and couldn't get the location to the meeting). So, I'm not sure why some people think that TES is unnaturally riddled with bugs, it just seems that some people go about doing odd things and just dig them up lol. Of course you going to cause some kind of glitch if you go about doing everything in the game some weird way, it's bound to happen  But isn't that really the strength of TES that it allows you the freedom to play it in such a way that you glitch the game?

I didn't know this bug was caused by opening "this one door". Anybody any idea which door he's talking about? If it's just that one door, shouldn't it be easy for modders to fix that?

Its already been fixed by modders. the only thing it took was removing like 5 bytes from the savegame and you were fine to play again.

I don't mean fixing it after the bug hits... I mean modding that 'door' Todd Howard is talking about.

The bug was linked to the main game timer, which was incremented every frame - as the PC version has a better framerate, this time was incremented more often, and thus overflowed sooner.

But what causes the A-bomb problem to begin with? Information overload? Memory leakage reaching a critical point? Deep magic? or just a permutation of the Y2K problem?

Hm sounds similiar to the Shivering Isles bug. 500 hours is a lot of time almost 3 weeks worth. If it cuts down on the amount of bugs then I'm all for it.
