[REQ] fixing the Nordic Broadsword & Claymore

Post » Mon Mar 15, 2010 12:00 pm

I wanted to use the nordic broadsword's blade + edging to make a new sword, but as I looked around at the blade mesh, I noticed that there are gaps between the blade center and the blade edging meshes, and the slopes of each mesh as it tapers toward the end of the blade don't quite line up. Not only that, but the blade tip does something very odd...

Check it out:

I'm not sure if the mesh gaps are noticeable in-game... but they do bug me now that I know about their existence.

So, my request is: would someone proficient with a modeling program be interested in fixing up those blade meshes? Or even creating new ones that look the same and have the same UV mapping as the old ones.

I've noticed that some of Bethesda's meshes are a little... off before (Dwemer battle axe for example), but I haven't done anything with the Nordic weapons to notice that they were off.

I'll take a look at the original meshes and get back with you in a little while.... :ninja:

Not sure if these issues were picked up on, but there's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5275 by Greg Schick, which fixes up a bunch of meshes.

I don't know if Dragon32's link has what you need or not, but I http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y76/Caultus/nordicblade_nes.jpg (very similar to the original), but the mapping may need a little tweaking. :hehe: If you're interested let me know and I'll email it to you.

@Dragon32: downloaded and looked through it... unfortunately, even though the mod author did "clean" the two nordic sword meshes, the gaps between the blade and blade edging are still there.

How would I go about cleaning up my meshes? For instance, I've used parts of "messy" meshes (the ones that were cleaned in that mod). Is this something I could do in Nifskope, or does it require Blender?

@swrdphantom: Oh, yes, I'd be quite interested!

Ah, shame. I kind of thought it wouldn't based on the description, but I hoped it would...

I'm sorry but I don't really know what was done in that mod and me and 3D modelling packages are just about complete strangers.

OK, I'll go ahead and email them to you. :)

However, it looks like the original mesh was mapped to tile the texture (kinda like the ebony longsword blade if you've ever messed with it), and I haven't figured out an easy way to do the same thing yet. If I get it figured out I'll send you updated meshes (or if someone already knows how to do such a thing maybe they could help?).

Fantastic! And it isn't really true tiling - it's just stretching the UV map so that it covers repetitions of the texture. I tweaked the UV maps with little fuss, and I've got those blades looking better than ever. :) Thank you so much, swrdphantom! I'll have to post screenshots when I get the time - busy start of the week, I feel like this: :bonk:
