Flare Gun

I was thinking of this earlier today:your in the desert and you run into some guys you cant beat, you pull out your flare gun, you point it up-ward and shoot 30 seconds later one of your 'buddies' comes to assist....your thoughts?

Only if your buddy is within 30 seconds distance of you. If he/she is miles away and he/she shows up after 30 seconds after just shooting a flare would be stupid. Second if the person is already that close to you why the need to signal with a flare?

Unless there are creatures of darkness that require killification via exposure to light, I don't some much need for this.

Maybe to light campfires, or as an extra lightsource when the pipboy just isn't cutting it?

I'd like it as an Energy Weapon.

Na man. This is after nukes were launched, for all you know you could shoot that into the air and someone in the strip would yell, "The nukes! There coming back for us!"

I wouldn't mind seeing it as melee weapon... Stabbing a raider in the face with a lit flare?

Would like to see it as a creature deterrant for ultimate pacifists like said only death is not required by said creature.

It could also be used as a distraction, throwing one in a darker area could attract people to the light giving you time to sneak up on them or by them. Flares that are shot could be used to light people on fire, distract people at longer ranges, and fireworks (fireworks should be in this game for fun...)

I think most of you are completely missing the point of the flare gun or just reading the title and not his post. This isn't a discussion of the merits of a flare gun as a weapon, but as a signaling device to companions.
No, i don't like the idea, as previously stated if they are only thirty seconds away a flare gun shouldn't be necessary.

...Or it could be used to help other nearby raiders go "Hey look, someone who needs help. Lets kill him!". My companion will always be nearby so I don't need a flare gun for anything other than a fun gag weapon.

It'd be an interesting way to scare off feral ghouls, who are supposed to avoid light, but with the exception of glowing ones and reavers, they're not all that tough anyway.

I agree it would alert other enemies to your location and you could be in more trouble (if like 4 deathclaws are near-by) even if your companion was there it could get tricky

Only if your buddy is within 30 seconds distance of you.

That kind of defeats the purpose of using the flare gun no?

A flare gun could be used during a quest to inform your allies (the faction you're working with) that the objective has been fulfiled and that they should attack or something like that...

If my buddy is miles away because in New Vegas are followers can do there own thing (if I remember right). If shooting a flare made them magically show up in 30 seconds no matter the distance, it would be stupid.

It could be used to incapacitate an enemy. Shoot at their chest and it'll knock them down for several seconds - enough for a retreat. Or, if your reputation in a major faction's high enough, you can fire it and a small squad will be sent to help you (if you're near an encampment). Otherwise, it's useless.

Alan Wake much?

Tom zane: Alan follow the signal.
Alan: I can't understand you!
TZ: Can you. . .
TZ: Can you hear me now? Good, follow the signal.

But on a serious note I wouldn't mind a reference to Alan wake in NV. Maybe a book, Flaregun or maybe even a diversuit with light shining from within it.

Lol I felt that Thomas Zane line to be a tad cheesy, but I agree a AW reference in NV would be awesome. AW greatest story of 2010!

 A flare gun wouldn't be a bad lower tiered, yet powerful early game weapon. It could light enemies on fire. Could melt a hole through their larynx. Could be fun.
