Fly Amanitas

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:50 am

The Fly Amanitas in Oblivion were perfect, they were structurally correct, and grew in clusters everywhere, just like real Amanita muscaria. It was one of my favorite things in the entire game.

Howevver, for Skyrim you have made the Fly Amanitas look ridiculous, they are indistinguishable from the other red mushrooms, there are no slender stems, and no spots on the caps! And from what I can tell so far, they only grow in caves! As far as I know, Amanita muscaria would never, ever grow in a cave.

Unless that cave contained ample sunlight and large coniferous trees.

Sorry, that just drove me nuts a little. It's a shame to see a detail like that go from spot on to completely wrong. Other than that, great game.

Haha, I know, a bit nitpicky, but we're talking about the Mario mushroom here! Classic fly amanita, how could they change that?

Yeah, I can't imagine too many people care about this.

Also, about the ebony: From what I remember, in TES "ebony" is neither a metal nor wood, it's some sort of volcanic glass that can be melted and reshaped into items like metal can.

Cancelled my pre-order :brokencomputer:

(And yeah, I think ebony in TES is some special, heavier ore of normal glass malachite)

Well I kind of care, not really, I just like mushrooms. Bethesda has a tradition of including plants in their games that really make me smile, like datura in New Vegas. I must have spent hours eating those and wandering around "tripping".

The fact that Bethesda always included details like this, that were accurate, showed to me that they too had an interest in herbs and drugs, and I can identify with that. :D

I'm not bothered by this, I guess, but you're correct. I was very impressed by the accuracy of the mushrooms in Oblivion. I guess they just decided to ignore it for this because only a small minority even notices.

I'd kill for an Amanita virosa, Bethesda.

Obviously, the Amanitas in Nirn are of a different species than those found on Earth.

One that happens to be able to shapeshift.

I for one think your concern about this is rather cool, if not exactly an urgent matter. I have lots of respect for the little things like that. It shows a labor of love on the part of designers and really adds to the game. It's the "unnecessary" stuff that sets games like this apart.

Yeah, Oblivion was definitely better in the mushroom department. This is my kind of nitpicking! This is like how I pester other Trekkies about how Wolf-359 should have been depicted as a red dwarf when they fought the Borg in TNG. :D

Wait, shroom clusters were your favorite thing about Oblivion? If I were the developer, I don't know if I felt complimented or offended by that :D

I wish I could take them and start tripping :)

But then that would be encouraging illegal behavior? Oh, who am I kidding. The game already has "skooma" and murder and thieving and all that other good stuff. Magic mushrooms would be the bees knees.

I'm sorry, but I just don't know how Skyrim is going to keep up in this competitive industry with such glaring mycological incongruencies.

i didnt even know that was an actual fungus...

i guess they figured no one would notice... obviously they were wrong :spotted owl: . seriously though, beth thinks steel is made from corundum, so i can excuse their lack of fungal realism.

its awesome that you even noticed that though. beth should turn to the community for matters of immersion and realism the next game, those little touches like actual mushrooms as alchemy ingredients (depicted correctly) are what makes a good thing great.
