FNV GOTY & the narrowband users?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 2:50 pm

Nope no announcement about the GOTY edition.

Given that the current version of FNV isn't really for anyone other than broadband users. I'd like Bethesda to at least consider a Steamfree (non-Steamworks) version for all of us who can't really use FNV simply because of a slow connection speed. This move would IMO show that Bethesda thinks of all it's fanbase and not just some.

Why the hell are you still on dial-up?

You'd think the fact that it svcks horribly would be enough incentive to upgrade to broadband (which is pretty cheap!), I mean, if the fact that you're about 10 years behind the times isn't enough.

I mean, you can even get pre-paid broadband if the cost is an issue, and every mobile phone company I've ever heard of has USB modems that you can use anywhere that your phone gets reception.

So again, why the hell are you still on dial-up? O_o

Possibly they are still on dial up as that is the only reliable internet connection they can get where they live and or it is the only reasonably priced method of internet connection they have access to.
Cable internet tends to be limited to the larger/est towns and cities, satellite connections can be spotty depending on the weather and Broadband connections depend on whether your telephone exchange has been upgraded to handle them or not plus depending on how far away you live and how many other people are using that exchange for internet usage at the same time affects the connection speed.

Edit: There is also the fact not everyone 'needs' superfast broadband internet connections for what they do online, or whoever pays for the internet connection is only willing to pay for dial up.

So having said all that, having an option for narrowband users would be very welcome for those who don't or can't have the luxury of Broadband.

I admit that it could be the OP lives out in some remote country town, and if that's the case, fine. Otherwise, there's no excuse. Broadband is ridiculously cheap here in Australia, running at around $30 a month (and like I said, there's pre-paid options as well). You can even bundle it with your home phone/mobile phone, in which case it is also pretty damn cheap.

Well, not everyone needs their private parts crushed in a vice, but it's still more pleasant than enduring a dial-up connection. I had dial-up in my younger days, and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

I've got broadband myself, but I can't help but wonder what's wrong with a box containing New Vegas on DVD as a "narrowband" option...it worked fine for me, seems all that would differ on dialup is it taking a bit longer to register the game so you can then set it to offline mode and get on with it.

I went hiking once, and was shocked to discover that trees don't even have wi-fi.

So, I feel your pain. :(

Back on topic here for a post or two...

Why is it that you don't want to use Steam on dial-up? I appear to be ignorant on such a topic.

Probably because the automatic patches/authorization would take a couple of days, if they worked at all.

Off topic: Holy crap! A Good friend of mine lives in Brisbane! Good evening!

On topic: I did hear of one guy on here who installed the game through Steam on a dial-up connection. He said it took, in total, around 12 hours. I'm not sure if he had ALL of the patches or not though, but he did install the game from Steam.

They aren't going to ditch Steam because a couple people still use Dial-Up.

I support this thread but for a different reason.

Since, it became a practice for developers to release games without a free demo for all their "honest" reasons I'm sure, at least in case we ended up dissapointed an option to give it away to a friend or sister's kids as a gift wouldn't seem as a complete waste of money. Yeah, breach of EULA boo - [censored] - hoo considering how many times developers breached my wallet with their false presentations.

Anyway, Steam makes gifts impossible now and all our money spent on games we don't like are a complete waste. At least Steam has a good reasoon for this, quote (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=549):
"Also note that you may only gift new purchases—you may not transfer games you already own. That’d be like wrapping up and presenting the toaster you’ve used every morning for the past year."

I always wondred if that's possible, and that anology makes no sense, the game doesn't get worn up when you play it like a physical item does.

On topic, not gonna happen. Steamworks is so integrated into the game that removing it would require replacing the achivement and DLC stuff with something else. I doubt they'll do that even for the GOTY edition. As for the OP, move to Finland, we are guaranteed by law to have access to a reasonably priced broadband :D

No sense at all and no its not possible, purchasing a game on Steam doesn't make you an owner.

Good point, they don't.

But most likely Bethesda has made a deal with Valve that binds New Vegas, and possibly the possible GOTY edition too, to Steam. Even if not, Bethesda should use an alternative system for achievements (personally couldn't care less, but i'm in the minority) if Steam was to be removed.

I suppose it's not impossible, but seems quite impropable to me.

Nope no announcement about the GOTY edition

Doesn't your game need to be declared "Game of the Year", in order to get a Game of the Year release? And doesn't this award require that the game have been released last year, so that you can logically say it was the best game of that year? And isn't a Game of the Year edition typically improved upon relative to the original release, typically by including expansions, of which F:NV has none at present?

Just sayin'.

Well we don't know how agreements look like and if it is possible that Bethesda made Steam exclusive distributor, even I don't see reason why would they do it. What is certain to me is that Fallout do not rely on Steam to function so we as customers can ask for Steam free installer. If that will be accepted is of course another thing. But if nobody ask, nobody will listen. It is also not going to hurt Steam users in any way. Quit opposite, it is always good for customers in general if there is some competition and different options.

I can't see the Steam requirement for authentication being dropped. However a solution for a GOTY edition could be to include patches on the DVD so that narrowband users are not facing days of downloads for their game to update - they'd only need to be online for the short time it takes for Steam to authenticate their copy once it and the patches are installed from disk.

IMO Steam should have a dedicated 800 number maintained by Valve for offline modem activations via direct dial.

Truer words have not been spoken...

It's always worth a look in the old bargain bin at your local game store...it gives you a good idea on how the industry is travelling.

No more exchanges, no more loaing to friends, no more returning the product.

And yes, broadband is a must in this brave new world....and hope that your government doesn't introduce an internet censoring/spy filter, or two things are likely to happen: 1. Speeds slow down; 2. Games that have borderline rating content can see a service such as Steam locked-out (yes, it is capable of happening in Australia).

I know, right? How can it be that they haven't yet announced the bundle pack that includes all the DLC they've released? Er...that they haven't yet released, I mean. :D

If you are using the internet for gaming, i think by definition you 'need' high speed internet for your use.

Broadband is usually as cheap as dial up nowadays anyway. DSL is like $15.
