FO3 crashes when entering buildingsmetro

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:54 am

I'm playing Fallout 3 with several texture mods, most notable NMC's hi res textures. The game was crashing on me every two minutes, but I found a 4 gb mod over at Fallout 3 nexus which seems to have taken care of the crashes for the most part. However whenever when I try to enter a building or a metro, basically whenever the game tries to load an intetior, it will still crash on me 95 precent of the time. I've tried reinstalling NMC's textures, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, nothing works. Is there any way to solve the problem besides using the vanilla textures? Here is my DxDiag if that helps.

A couple of things, did you do the .ini change to limit your cpu to two cores while playing the game? Is your game loaded outside the UAC? Finally, is your load order right? Did you have it arranged by BOSS? Are you running FOSE? Do you load the game with FOMM or another mod manager. ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated? Is the game patched to 1.7?

I haven't changed the .ini, is there some setting I should chnage to make the game use all four cores?I tried to run BOSS, but it seemes to conflict with my 4 gb mod. I'm not using FOSE, and though I do use FOMM I lanuch the game through the normal launcher. Disabling autosave and always running the game as an administrator seemes to have helped somewhat, but the problem persists.

You want to limit the number of cores used, not increase it. FO3 doesn't do well running on more than two and the .ini fix limits it to two cores.

I see, thanks for the clarificaton. I looked online and found a couple ini edits which supposidly limit core usage and resolve the crashing when loading an interior issue I've been having. They seem to be working pretty well so far, so now I can just hopefully enjoy the game without any more problems.

There is a possibilitly that you will still have problems as long as you keep the game in your program files folder. Fallout3 runs better when it is installed outside of program files and outside the UAC. I think the reason you cannot use BOSS is because your Fallout is in your program files and the UAC is blocking BOSS. Make sure you check the read me's for the mods you have. Some of them might require FOSE.

So I have done the following, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game into a difftent directory (C\games\Fallout 3) using vanilla textures, Installed the latest patch, I have updated my graphics card drivers, I updated .net framework, I set Fallout 3 to run as an administrator in Windows XP SP3 compatability mode, I installed FOSE even though none of my mods require it, I altered my .ini to limit core usage to only two cores, I sorted my load order with BOSS, and I'm still using the 4 gb mod I found at the nexus. Not only am I still getting crashes when loading interiors, but I've been getting random crashes lately as well. Fallout 3 has always run really well on my current system, even with the hi res textures installed, so I just don't get it. I'm starting to think the game just hates me.

You say the game always ran well, what have you changed that could cause the problems you are having? The best thing to do is think back to when the game first starting giving you problems and than go back to that point.

With Fose you have to have Fose loader(a separte DL archive) . Put Fose loader.exe and its companion file in the same directory as your Fallout3.exe
Another thing with Fose , is make sure you didnt put a folder in there during install. If you find a folder named "Fose" pull all its contents outside of the folder into the directory the folder was in. Think it should just be Fallout3,but maybe it was in the DATA folder???
Then you have to launch the game useing Fose loader.exe or with a mod manager that gives you an option to launch fose.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didnt even know you could mod the game and run it useing the regular exe. err atleast without unwanted results. But makes sense you could seeing how the official DLC's are considered mods
You definately will get unwanted results having Fose installed and not useing its Loader. Atleast in my experience.
FOSE should be in the Fallout3 file right after fallout3.exe. I think that loading the game from the fallout3.exe does not load FOSE or ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated. I have always loaded a modded game with FOMM, using the Launch FOSE button. This way you will see all the files that are being loaded in the game as opposed to using the Fallout3.exe, where the added files are hidden.
Since I dont have FOSE installed currently ... I thought I'd have a look see at atleast redownloading the archives.
Im guessing this is where you got it >>> http://fose.silverlock.org/
I see now I was running the older version , so with FO3 patch 1.7 you need the v1.2 b2 .... and atleast on my system they look like an unziped file , but you still need to unzip them.
Running a test unzip to blank folder ... It still puts a fose folder instead of all the contents. So considering my last attempt ... you need to pull them out of that folder??? not sure here , wish they had install direction.
Okies I found install directions from a read me when you unpack them.
Awesome ... it has the FOSE Loader allready there.
Read the readme , it states wich versions it is not compatible with and also Live. Sorry if you allready knew this , so thanx for teaching me something new ... :blush: :goodjob:
