FO3 levels up while you're idle; FO4 does it whenever

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 11:59 am

The moment you have gained enough XP, FO4 levels you up immediately. That can be distracting and annoying when you happen to be in the thick of battle. FO3, however, doesn't do that. It waits until you finish the battle and are idle before notifying you with the level-up screen and music. A small detail, to be sure, but I wonder if FO4 can be patched or modded to behave like FO3 in this regard.

FO3 also forced you into the level up screen, whereas 4 doesn't

Personally I like the new method. Let's me chose when I pick my perks, or save them if I want.

I hated the old method that forced you to level & pick your perks right after combat or conversations.

It's not distracting or annoying to me. I think it's a HUGE improvement.

But the level-up *notification* itself and the fanfare music is distracting, especially when you are in a battle and hearing battle music. The level-up music actually abruptly cuts into the battle music when that happens, which can be quite jarring. The fact that you don't need to use perk points right away means that you also don't really need to be notified of a level-up right away, doesn't it? So I'm all for postponing the notification until you are idle. But does the new game engine allow it?

Love it. Shows me I've dinged and sometimes I forget to level up immediately and I ding again a while later. Boom! Double perks to choose B)

I know that I forgot a leveled up a time or two as I was mid fight when it happened, not a big deal to me however, don't mind the fanfare that much.

Huh? I find Fo4's handling of it to be a vast improvement over Fo3 and FNV. The mini celebration of leveling up in Fo4 is just about as unobtrusive as it can be and you can spend those points whenever you want. Additionally, I believe leveling up refills your health which can be a life savor in a few situations. I strongly disliked Fo3 and FNV forcing me to deal with leveling up as soon as I went idle.

The key to a great game is attention to EVERY DETAIL. If the developers thought like you do, they would never make a great game, because every detail needs to be THOUGHT OUT.

And when you play this game the details are so fleshed out you just realize what a stupid comment that was. Attention to detail is very important, and Bethesda is one of the few developers that gets it right, but the nitpicking is insane. You can't please everyone, and that is fair, but this is such a minor thing. And when one person says they have a problem with it and ten others prefer it, well then it was the right design choice.

But you would love it even more if it were done while you were idle, wouldn't you? It would be EVEN LESS OBTRUSIVE, wouldn't it? So why wouldn't you prefer that?

The unobtrusive level-up notification WAS IN THE LAST GAME, and I liked it, and surely most of you liked it too. Son, stop getting so worked up when faced with opinions different from yours. Doesn't matter if only one person has the opinion. Every paying customer's opinion is worthwhile. And you can't say mine was a "stupid comment" when the feature was IN THE LAST GAME. It's a LEGITIMATE thing to bring up.

I haven't found the level-up notification to be too distracting. In fact, I've missed it once or twice when I was in the thick of battle. The game does prompt you again occasionally if you have points to spend. I think the new system works quite well, and I appreciate not being forced into the level-up screen while I'm busy looting all the guys I just finished killing.

Because leveling up is a huge deal. I want to be clearly notified when that happens, but at any given point, I don't want my entire screen to hit me with a Surpirse! Pop up! and then be forced to spend points I could save for later (although I never do in Fo4). More choice, more control, more fluidity. Honestly, I don't see how you could possibly want the old system back.

If you can't counter my arguments, admit it. I addressed every one of your points and you know it. Some people just can't handle disagreements. And it's not like I asked Bethesda to find a cure for AIDS. I asked for a feature that has ALREADY BEEN DONE BY THEM BEFORE, LOL!

I'm not saying I want the old system back, just the way the NOTIFICATION was handled in FO3. I know level up notification is a huge deal, but not getting distracted in the thick of battle is a huge deal too.

The reason they waited in FO3 was because of the pop-up. Now that the perk choice is at the user's control, they want you to know the moment you level up, which makes sense. Also, since they decided to do the add health thing, as someone already pointed out it can be very useful to have that occur immediately. It's definitely saved me in battle.

I like the fo4 method tbh. I can do a quick check what perk I need right now before deciding on what to get. Like in fo3 you beat a boss then forced to pick a perk only to find the room behind the boss needs a higher lock pick or hacker skill or more carry capacity for loot or se such thing and if you revert to a save you have to do the whole fight over again.... IT is one of my pet hates in fo3 I'm glad they did away with.

I lol'd hard at the "every paying customers opinion is worthwhile" bit. From what I've seen of the amount of crying and complaining on this forum it certainly isn't.

Pretty sure you're standing alone on this one OP. FO4's system is a gigantic improvement over FO3's and I find it less obtrusive entirely. Didn't FO3 make aq noise when you leveled up anyway? It was while you were idle that it FORCED you into the stat screen and choosing a perk. What an annoyance that was, especially if I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my points/perk. You're likely gonna have to request some modder to specifically make this as I can't see Bethesda wasting their time to change something they nailed dead correct IMO
