FO4 Crashing my PC after 150 hours, desperation sinks in!

Completely uninstall the game then reinstall.

Keep cloud saves disabled.

Try that.

I'm thinking there is something going on with your game files. Something that one of the mods might have manipulated or you did. Also when you uninstall keep your old saves. Load one save at a time when you do a fresh reinstall to isolate the problem.

Anything from the BSOD viewer?

Sorry, but I'm working on it - thanks for the patience. I must just not understand. Do I just have it running and play until it crashes, then start the viewer when I boot back up to see what happened?

Edit: And that didn't take very long - went from the bottom of the Abandoned Shack bunker to the top, exited, pressed ESC to save and crashed.

And right, so I must not get it then. I had the viewer pulled up when I crashed, pulled it back up after I had rebooted, and there was no information and it said "0 crashes." I'm going to google how to use the program and will update if I figure it out. Apparently my computer isn't creating the mini-dump files that are needed for the viewer to find out what's going on. I'm on that now.

And Ascalaphus, I'm going to post this BSOD Viewer info and then circle back to trying your solution. Thanks for the suggestion.

You dont have to keep it running. The next time you BSOD and upon reboot, run the program and it will search for your crash dump and display the respective info.

I'm having what I think may be the same problem (crashes that reboot the PC). I initially assumed it was a hardware problem, because it reset the PC rather than freezing or crashing to the desktop, but I've measured GPU and CPU temps, stress tested the GPU, swapped out the memory, etc., etc., and nothing seems to fix it, and none of the monitoring software reports problems. Also, updated the GPU driver and the BIOS (at one point, I was operating under the assumption that it was a temperature issue, or at least a temperature measurement issue). And, it doesn't happen in other games (Witcher 3, for example). Mostly, it seems to be random, but now there's one that occurs consistently after maybe 10 seconds in the root cellar in Sanctuary.

Out of curiosity, what motherboard do you have?

Alright, so I tried Ascalaphus' plan of deleting, reinstalling, etc. I only moved my most recent 3 saves back when I started it up. I was able to play for 2-3 hours before I tried to trade with Ronnie Shaw and the computer crashed. I really thought that had fixed it for a minute.

Langnao: I'm still not getting any error messages popping up. I have the viewer and have have been trying to use it but it seems like either my computer isn't generating the dump files or the viewer isn't finding them. Is it possible for the computer to crash and not have a chance to (or just not) produce the BSOD error?

JSpade: My motherboard is an ASRock Z87 Extreme 6.

Edit: So I've tried to trade with Ronnie three times now in rapid succession.

  1. I'd been questing, rebuilding The Castle walls, trading settlers better gear, etc. Went to barter with Ronnie (about a minute after I auto-saved by resting) and crashed

  2. Reloaded previous save, bartered with Ronnie, queued a few items to sell and when I clicked on The Last Minute, I crashed.

  3. Reloaded previous save, messed around a bit, traded with settlers some more, tried to barter with Ronnie and immediately crashed.

I'd made a few saves between steps 2 and 3 and my last was an auto-save so I hard saved, quit to desktop, moved everything but the most recent hard save out, then step 3 happened.

How about trying an earlier verson driver? It may not help but better than doing nothing. Your system setup almost identical to mine. Other than processor, motherboard, I m running 970 Win10. Go to ASRock website and d/l all the latest drivers (skip graphic since we r using Nvidia driver). Nvidia driver try 358.91 (that's what I m running and never upgrade).

I've always updated my drivers with the GeForce Experience, at least since I've started with Windows 10. I don't see an option to roll back to a previous driver. I'll do some more Googling and try it manually if I need to.

Also, a question about DirectX - could it be the problem? I just reinstalled some other games and during their Steam install, most of them installed a version of it. Could a game overwrite a newer (more compatible?) version with an older version from their files? I don't know how that all works, I just noticed it and thought I'd take a shot in the dark.

I don't believe geforce experience has a rollback feature. I haven't had issues with nvidia drivers since I purchased this computer back in November.

Applications check for certain directx libraries during installation and will load missing ones. This won't overwrite newer libraries, it will only install missing files. For example a game might load a dx9 library required that wasn't included in windows 10.

You could have a corrupted directx library but the easiest way to fix that is to reinstall windows. I doubt that is your issue though.

Huh, mine is an Asus Maximus VI Hero--I was hoping we might match. Oh well. It still seems like a hardware-related problem associated with Fallout 4 specifically, though. My problem seems very similar to yours--no warning, no error messages, nothing unusual in Windows' Event Viewer (other than an unexpected shutdown, obviously). At least for me, there are no warning symptoms, either--no graphics, audio, or performance problems, just a sudden reset. Maybe a power supply problem? I don't really know how to diagnose that, though--mine is a 750W Corsair, which I would think would be sufficient, but maybe something about Fallout 4 causes the system to pull more power than usual? I realize I'm pretty much grasping at straws at this point, though.

More on my system:

Core i7 4770k 3.5 GHz

840 EVO Series 500GB SSD

16 GB RAM

Corsair RM Series 750W PSU

Asus Maximus VI motherboard

GTX 770 4GB graphics card

Well, it has been fairly solid the last couple nights--I've been able to play for several hours without resets. I've done two things that I can tell since the last resets: (1) I updated Windows 10 to Version 1511, and (2) I disabled and stopped using all autosaves. Not sure which did it, or even that it's necessarily fixed--the problem has gone away before only to return again. Still, a couple things to try if you're still having problems.

That's great that that's worked for you. My Windows 10 is already 1511 and I'd turned off autosaves before, but they've been re-enabled. Maybe I'll try turning them off again to see how it goes. Along with the other things, maybe it'll help.

Right. Loaded up, turned off autosaves, played for about 5 minutes, and crashed. Good times.

Sadly in my experience random shut down's and restarts have been the Power supply maybe too much gaming lately lol? Can't say that this is your issue for sure but it has happened to me twice now and both times replacing the PSU solved the issue If you are hearing your PC rev up and down especially while idle or not in use it could be a good sign.

Something to consider as I had no idea the psu could cause such issues, in the past the pc just wouldn't turn on anymore but I learned that they can also wreak havoc on your system as the constant off and on can possibly destroy your hard drives as well if they are reading or writing & power outs in general will kill your PSU/drives too.

OP here. Figuring out the PSU will be my next avenue of approach, but I just had HeavyLoad close up on me after running about an hour and a half. I was running the Stress CPU, Stress GPU, and Allocate Memory tests. The text is below, retrieved from the Event Viewer - Applications.

Spoiler
The description for Event ID 0 from source HeavyLoad cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

I've pretty much stopped playing FO 4 all together until I get this sorted out. Losing 1/5 of your play time because of crashes is pretty lame, especially when you're building. Also, I figure that with the computer crashing that consistently, it can't be good for anything to keep doing that.

Editted: Didn't use enough words.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents and say that I also am having random reboots, that just started on Jan 5, 2015. I have read and tried everthing that has been listed here and nothing has prevented the reboots. I played over 200 hrs before this started happening. I am on the Steam version. I'm not sure when the last update for Fallout 4 was, but this problem is only happening with Fallout4. I tried 5 other games over the last day and had no problems. Tonight I start playing F4 and within 10 minutes, had a reboot. Now the only thing in my event log that hasn't been listed above was a Malware bytes update that happened just before the crash, but I've had this program running 24/7 for the past year or so with no problems, so I can't really think that this caused the problem, unless all of you also run Malware bytes antimalware.

Hope someone figures this out, because I just started my 2nd play through and wanted to try some new things and completely explore the whole map and these crashes are getting very annoying!

Best thing to do is start your own thread with a dxdiag posted in spoiler tags.

https://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

The button to the left of the Font dropdown. Select spoiler.

Well, it's back--I managed to go a few days without resets, but it has started resetting again, seemingly at random. I suppose it could be the PSU--the fact that it's only Fallout 4 and sometimes occurs repeatedly in certain areas in Fallout 4 makes me a little suspicious of that explanation, though.

If a crash causing your conputer to reboot, the only way to get the error message, is to disable the automatic restart feature on system failure (that Windows has enabled by default) and try to reproduce the crash. (or any crash)

I tried that suggestion--the computer reboots without an error message, I'm guessing because Windows isn't involved in the decision to reboot. It might be the PSU--I'm reading elsewhere that Fallout 4 may put more of a strain on a PSU than some other games, so a faulty PSU may misbehave in Fallout 4 without doing so in other games. So, I'm going to try swapping out the PSU tomorrow, and see if it's more stable.

That's actually the same problem I am having - there seems to be no way to stop the reboot, no chance to see/log the blue screen or anything. Let me know how the new PSU goes, please. I may give that a try if it works for you. Just have to find a spare PSU.

I replaced it on Sunday, and so far it has been working fine. I'm not 100% sure whether it has been fixed or not--I thought I had it fixed previously only for the problem to return. Still, I've played it for maybe 6 hours, and so far, so good--no resets.

Hm. Interesting. I'd hate to have to buy a new PSU, but that does seem like a pretty plausible solution. Thanks for the heads up.

So, as it turns out, my PSU is at the bottom of the tier 4 list. It seems more and more that the PSU is the culprit. I've looked at four online PSU calculators, thinking about a replacement.

  • outervision calculator: 418W

  • Newegg: 710W

  • powersupplycalculator: 476W

  • MSI: 419W

I was thinking of getting something in the 600 - 650W range; 500 seems too low. Any recommendations? Should I just look at the list? I'm hoping to get one for $100 or less. I guess a PSU isn't the worst thing to need to replace.

That is interesting--my previous PSU was apparently in their Tier 3 list, and I've upgraded to one in the Tier 1 list. Hopefully that was the problem!
