FO4 from a Bostonians Perspective

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:33 pm

I'll have to say, as a huge fan of TES & FO, playing this on the next gen console (ps4) is great, but having it take place in my home town has been pretty awesome. I spend the first few days just exploring Bethesdas version of what I see every day. Now obviously it has been scaled down a ton, but here are a few of my top observations:

1. It would have been great to include some of the Brookline, Allston/Brighton Area and Back Bay (after Copley) instead of just going right from Copley to Fenway to chestnut hill.... But I get it, there is only so much room...
2. Copley sq, Harvard sq, the library and the commons were pretty well done for scaled back versions of the area.
3. The accents are hilarious, right out of any of the dozen Boston based movies that came out over the years.
4. Very bummed the Garden and Zakim bridge were omitted!!
5. Revere beach actually looks more desirable after the nuclear apocalypse...
6. The castle is awesome! Have not made it to spectacle island yet.
7. The T service is no different aside from the fact there are better announcements 200 years in the future after the nuclear blast. Disabled trains all over the place is spot on!

I've never been to Boston but just thought I'd inquire if some omissions to the area may be based on the time line? I know that was sort of the standpoint that they've taken in the past. I.E. the vegas strip wasn't identical and the majority of the surrounding area was far from it (also got nuked to pieces).

Keep in mind due to the alternate timeline, anything build in real life after 1950s might simply not exist in the Fallout universe (or in the case of Scollay Square, something that doesn't exist in real life Boston existing in Fallout universe)

Boston is pretty cool.

New York City is over-rated IMO (it could be that I've been there numerous times already though).

Philadelphia has pretty good food.

Here in Connecticut, we have nothing really famous worldwide or even nation-wide :sadvaultboy:

Well after playing fo4 you will have a pretty good layout of the area if you do visit. Less mutants with guns, but you'll still want to stay out of the Charles.

I live in the town that houses Wildwood Cemetery, I wish I could build a settlement there (to its NE), pretty much where the plane is. I love walking the streets and seeing how much of good job Bethesda did in its envisioning of Boston. Heck I even walked the Freedom Trail in game to see how close it was to RL, and was pleasantly impressed, mutants and all. :)

I have to say, you can't do Boston unless you also dump inches on snow on it in Winter. I guess they are saying there was a significant change in weather after the apocalypse.

Not from the area but have relatives who are... I was very interested to see that in the Fallout universe, the mosquitoes are entirely unchanged in size and level of ferocity.

Not officially the undead, but ride the T around long enough and you will see creatures on a comparable level.

Are all the bridges on the Charles drawbridges in real life?

Because in the game, some are drawbridges and some aren't and that doesn't seem logical.

There is at least one at the end near Charlestown and North station, but the main ones in the game, which are most likely mass ave and the BU bridge are not draw bridges.

The Lexington town square (more of a triangle) is where I expected it to be. Look for a Minuteman (IRL) statues on a small triangle shaped park. A couple of decades ago, a cop chased me as I swerved towards the statues. He made the same turn, and a couple of other ones right behind me. I lost him in the Star Market parking lot 2 blocks over.... Good times. :)

I didn't realise Boston had the history it does, with regards to the wars of independence. I knew Paul Revere's name but didn't know his story.

Following the trail to find the Railroad was a good mission. All those old buildings and stuff. It dawned on me pretty quickly, "Hey! These are real places and this is their actual history!"

Must be very cool for you op.
