FO4: from the eyes of a local

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 4:52 am

When I figured out that fallout 4 was going to being in the Boston area, I went crazy. Finally, Boston is going to get a full game about it! And after playing 120+ hours(Most of that time exploring), I have a general idea of what the map is like. Even though it is a great game, there are 2 things that I noticed only because I live around Boston that kinda annoyed me.

1. The smaller towns are not that accurate.

-Even though Bethesda sent out people to many of the locations they put in the game, I feel that the small towns didn't get enough love on the game. I know that the game was a massive undertaking, but Adding a little thing, just 1 or 2, that was REALLY from the town would of been nice. There are some places that could add to the overall story of the game. One of the largest things that I can think of is the Military labs in Natick, which develops things like MREs, Parachutes, and ARMOR. Birthplace of Power Armor Confirmed?

2. Where the hell is the clam chowder???

-This may seem a bit stupid, but what's Boston without a bowl of New England Clam Chowder? Nothing, That's what! I am very dissapointed in you Bethesda, and I'm waiting for a apology letter.

I agree with you on 2, what a huge oversight. BuT on the first, I have to disagree. There's only so much you can do.

I too am from the area, not Boston but out here in the sticks. One thing that should be considered is the time lines. While here in our current time the FO universe evolved with 50's tech staying the norm. So being kind of an alternate reality, things you/we know about the area may have not existed in the FO world as it is really an alternate to what we know. I brought it up on another thread about there being no Hanscom Field (AFB) in Bedford. But it is possible in FO it was closed down at some point and was no longer an airport, or even that it existed to begin with.

I am not sure I would want to eat clams out of that water. Shoot the clams would likely eat you.

I don't see the appeal in Boston, just a normal area like any other generic place. Unlike Washington DC, that actually really interesting.

They probably did what they could, they tried to maximize graphics and some of the small towns probably got sacrificed for looks, you can tell some of the houses don't have doors as it is, if they tried to make more towns it would just be more unopenable doors.

I assume you mean "Manhattan Clam Chowder" since Beth would never include anything as deliciously wonderful as New England Clam Chowder.

Just had a thought: We have the potatoes and carrots and cream (I'm assuming Brahmin put our milk), but, what about the clams? If the crabs mutated that much, what on Earth happened to the clams! The could be downright scary. :)

These days 1 or 2 little things gets you sued by greedy people. "We demand Bethesda pay our town 1 billion dollars for digitally defacing our statue of _______!!!

Although I'm not a native, I lived in and around the Greater Boston area at various points in my life. I haven't been back in probably 10 years. Playing FO4 has been particularly fun because it's like a virtual walk down memory lane for me, traipsing though the ruins of so many places I used to frequent. I also get a particular thrill out of climbing to highspots and just gazing out over the now devastated landscape. Breathtaking! Granted, things aren't exactly as I remember them, but I keep reminding myself that this is not the Boston of Real Life. This is Alternate Boston of the Future, which resembles the Boston we all know (and many of us love).

Overall, I think they did an outstanding job of capturing the feel of the city.

Meh, i lived in DC as a kid in Patomic, Fairfax and Alexandria and gotta tell you it's pretty much the same as anywhere else. The main difference being downtown DC which has a building ordinance 100's of years old stating no building should exceed 3 stories. That really limited the buildings in FO3 and i'm glad to be in Boston where they can go up 10 or more.

^ I worked construction in DC for roughly 12 years and the building codes for DC are a little more lenient than that and have been changed over the years. IIRC the limit is about 130' currently.

1. They were never meant to be. Stop taking the Fallout universe so seriously

2. Being from Beantown (and now living in NorCal) I'd have to say if I were my PC, I'd avoid any fish chowder and stews like the plague. Because really, would you seriously consider eating irradiated shell fish in the Commonwealth? Especially since you know for a fact that ALL the fish (including those mutated dolphin-shark monstrosities) are DEAD??

The only exception to this rule appears to be

Mirelurk hunters = mutated giant lobsters. Yum.

Mirelurk Queen = mutated horseshoe crab. Or some form of crustacean which is now out for revenge for humans eating it's ancestors.

Mirelurk Kings = bizzare fishman - lizard man hybrid. Can't decide which. But my PC would rather clean all the dirty toilets in the

Commonwealth with his tongue than make a fish stew out of this abnormal critter.....

Doesn't it remotely bother you that there is a complete absence of ANY kind of marine life--let alone shellfish--hanging out in the irradiated waters of the Commonwealth anywhere?

You should listen to what Mother Nature and Murphy's Law are apparently trying to tell you. AVOID CONSUMING ANYTHING IN A CHOWDER THAT REMOTELY LOOKS LIKE SHELLFISH :P

edit: that being said, Faneuil Hall was completely underwhelming. And I totally miss 12th night on Boston Commons. But there are always mods to try and restore these bits of rich Commonwealth history to its real life glory.
